The Castle of the Dragon Queen is a castle in the overworld of Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation.

It is located in the mountains east of Khoryv, surrounded by a ring of mountains that make it only accessible via Ramia. The castle is not a Zoom point in any version of the game.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

The castle lies in extreme isolation from the rest of the world, with seemingly no humans having ventured to it in several decades. It is a vertically-aligned rectangular building with one large chamber encompassing two reflecting pools and a block of smaller, interconnected rooms. The Queen rests in the exact center of the castle.

The Dragon Queen lives peacefully in the opulent palace along with dwarves, faeries, and talking animals, but she is close to death at the time the Hero and party arrive. She bequeaths the Hero the Sphere of Light, which is necessary in order to defeat Zoma, the final boss of Dragon Quest III. Before her passing on and fading away, she lays one egg that the player can inspect to hear the faint sounds of an infant coming from within.

In the remakes of Dragon Quest III, the castle serves as the entrance point to the first bonus dungeon. It can be found by standing in the sunlight of the northernmost window of the castle. This bonus dungeon leads the party to the Cloudsgate Citadel and Xenlon, and has lead to much speculation over possible connections between the Erdrick trilogy and the Zenithia trilogy.

Heavy fog occludes the castle, preventing players from taking Ramia there until Baramos is slain. After Zoma makes his telepathic declaration of war in the throne room of Aliahan, the Hero will dream of the Dragon Queen's castle that night and the fog will clear for Ramia to land.

The Queen has more courtiers than in past versions, including an faerie, several Priests, and a talking cat. Several rescue monsters linger on the outer wall of the castle: a prestidigitator during the day, a cureslime at dusk, and an ursa major at night. The layout of her castle has not changed much aside from the entrance to her chamber now being from the south instead of the north. During the new ending of the game Ramia will be shown flying towards the castle for an unknown purpose, and after the credits roll the final scene of the game will show an a fervently devoted Priest ominously swearing to raise the late Queen's egg in her absence.

Trivia

  • The location of the Queen's castle roughly corresponds to northern China, an appropriate home for a dragon monarch.
