Rashers is a pig-like boss encountered in Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.

He and his partner Stripes are lackeys of Cardinal Sin that guard the entrance to Alltrades Abbey.

Characteristics

A beastly demonic dark pig that stands on two trotters, ever ready to strike and smash with his massive bludgeoning club. Rashers wears a white shirt with a crescent moon design, white armlets, and a white mawashi similar to those worn by sumo wrestlers. In the first battle against him, he uses the Jolly Rager watery skill to strike down all enemies in a single swathe. Rashers can also blow up Sandstorms in order to cause blindness. His English name, Rasher, refers to a thin slice of bacon or ham. Rashers and his fellow guard Stripes delight in the newfound power that the Cardinal has granted them in order to crush any humans that attempt to traverse the Western Cave. The two together are not particularly bright themselves, being fooled easily by the thief Fingers and prefer to use their brute force and unfair advantage in combat to overpower their foes.

History

On the island where Alltrades Abbey is located, the Demon King sent Cardinal Sin to take over the temple in order to prevent any adventurers from becoming Heros and to steal powers away from unsuspecting humans and use them as an offering. Cardinal Sin placed both Rashers and Stripes guard the entrance to the Precipice Pass and augmented their powers so no humans would be able to stand up to them.

Strategy

The first battle against Rashers and Stripes in the Western Cave is completely unwinnable in both versions of the game, due to a combination of having an exceedingly high amount of HP and simply recovering too much HP each turn for the party to make any dent. In the original Sony PlayStation version, it is theoretically possible to beat the two if the party's levels are raised to an absurdly high level, but it makes no impact on the story as the game continues as if the party has been defeated in any case. Rashers and Stripes have an infinite amount of HP in the Nintendo 3DS version, so it is impossible to try defeating them.

The second time the party faces Rashers and Stripes, High Priestess Jacqueline negates the stolen power that has been granted to them and Eustace joins in order to face them on equal footing. Rashers will no longer be able to use Jolly Rager on the party, but he can still land Desperate attacks and blow up sand to blind the party. It will still be a difficult fight since the party hasn't gained back their lost abilities or spells, forcing them to rely on Medicinal herbs and the Salvation stone for healing. It is a good idea to focus on defeating Rashers first as his Sandstorm is a nuisance. As long as the party stays regularly healed, the two beasts will eventually be defeated.
