Plain clothes (or just clothes) are a common piece of equipment in every installment of the Dragon Quest franchise. Made of thick cloth, they don't really offer much protection. Even so, it's better than nothing and it does lessen the damage inflicted by the enemy a little bit. Plain clothes can be commonly found in the dressers of villagers' homes in practically every game.

The plain clothes have a defence bonus of +2 and can be bought at Tantegel's village for 20 gold. Due to text restrictions in the Game Boy Color remake of Dragon Quest, the plain clothes are named Cloth with a picture of armor besides it.
