Galenholm is a town located in the northwestern corner of Alefgard in Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest Builders. It is named for its founder, Galen who traveled the kingdom as a bard of high renown, and owned the Lyre of Ire. It was preceded by Galen's House, which was present during the events of Dragon Quest III.
It does not appear in Dragon Quest II along with many other locations in Alefgard. However, it reappears in the Dragon Quest II remake in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, like with most other cut locations. Being located in the far north, its climate is bitterly cold, sometimes even freezing.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest[edit]
Galenholm is typically the first major town the hero visits after Tantegel, offering substantial equipment improvements over the paltry selection in the aforementioned town. It is also revisited later in the game after the Hero has obtained a supply of Magic Keys, giving the player access to the Grave of Galen.

Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit]
Galenholm serves a similar function as in the original game but features a few notable additions. Design wise it is now islet connected to the larger landmass via a bridge and has a thriving harbor, with Galen's grave being on a separate islet. Upon entering Galenholm when searching for the thief's key under the advice of King Lorik, the player will witness a Swindler attempting to sell the key to the Would-Be Heroes at a obscene mark-up. The wanna-be's rightfully call out the Merchant's shenanigans and he departs for the Roadside Inn to the south. Much later after completing the scenario at the Weeping Isle and returning to Kol, a cutscene will playing showing Robbin' 'Ood and Would-Be Heroes defending the town from monsters that spontaneously appeared in town after the Dragonlord tried to harness the power of the Sphere of Light. After obtaining the lyre of ire, the wandering Troubadour Zalen can be encountered here in order to progress his sidequest.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]
In the remake of Dragon Quest II, Galenholm returns as an optional area, in which residents talk about the legends of both Zalen and Galen. The only bearing the island town has on the game's plot is tying into the tragic backstory of the Queen of the Mermaids and the Sunken Ship.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]
Galenholm is the first section of the original game that may be visited through the Echo Chamber. The Luminary finds himself taken back to just before the events of that game, where the people of the town have fled due to monster attacks brought on by a creature that wanted the Lyre of Ire to improve it's skills as musician. Once the creature is discovered to be an off-key Bongo drongo, it is defeated in a battle. With the Lyre of Ire returned, the people return to their lives and eagerly gossip about a rumored hero paying their village a visit in the near future.
Dragon Quest Builders[edit]
In this game, Galenholm (along with Kol) consists of different areas that can be reached by using teleportals:
The chapter's theme focuses on harnessing magic to fight elemental enemies, and the boss at the end of Chapter 3 is a colossal fusion of a Magmalice and a Firn fiend. The town itself has fallen to monsters and become a frozen hellscape.
