The Magic shield is a recurring shield in the Dragon Quest series. It is designed to guard against harmful magic and elemental damage, hence the whimsical design.

Localization history[edit]

In Japanese, there are actually two separate but similar items which the localized English item of "Magic Shield" describes:

  • The first is マジックシールド majikku shīrudo (i.e. Magic Shield), which first appeared in Dragon Quest V and has so far only appeared in that game and its remakes.
  • The second is まほうのたて mahō no tate (Japanese for "Magic Shield"), which first appeared in Dragon Quest VI before showing up in all main series installments that followed (as well as the remakes of Dragon Quest III), as well as some spin-offs.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

Appearing only in the remakes, the Magic shield can be equipped by all vocations save for the Martial Artist. It boosts Defence by +25, and cuts all magical damage by 25%. It can be purchased from Baharata, Mur, and Persistence for 2,000 gold and sold for 1,500 gold. It is also the most protective shield that a Mage can equip.

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +22, and reduces damage taken from Frizz, Sizz, and fire breath by 7. It can be purchased from Lodestar Harbour, Zoomingale, Helmunaptra, and Battenburg for 3,400 gold and can be sold for 1,700 gold (2,550 gold in the Super Famicom version). It can be equipped by the Hero, his son, and various monster companions. The son also joins the party with one equipped. A magic shield can be found on the Ventuno TNT board as well.

The instruction manual for the magic shield, That's Magic, is the reward for quest #26, A Cold Crush. The quest is given by a man in the Sniflheim bar, and is resolved by finding a Snærose in the southernmost point of the Snærfelt.
