The Mirror shield is a recurring shield in the Dragon Quest series. True to its name, it can reflect spells back at the caster.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest IV[edit]

The mirror shield has a defence bonus of +45 and can be equipped by the Hero, Ragnar McRyan, Kiryl, and Psaro. It has a 25% chance to bounce magic back, and cuts all types of spell damage (save Zap) by 33.3%

It is found in the Nadiria Watchtower and can be sold for 6,750 gold coins, but it is not recommended to do so. In remake versions of the game, another shield can be found in the fifth stage of the Pioneer Town, as well.

Dragon Quest VIII[edit]

The mirror shield offers a defense bonus of +43. It can be equipped by the Hero or Angelo, and has a 20% chance to reflect spells. When equipped along with the Mirror armour, the reflection rate jumps to 33.3%.

It can be purchased in Tryan Gully for 15000 Gold Coins, and can be sold for 7500.

Inspiration[edit]

The earliest known instance of a mirror shield belongs to the myth of Perseus, who was given extraordinary armaments by the gods in his task to slay Medusa. Among these was the fantastic Aegis shield from Athena, which is described in equal amounts as being either a true mirror in the modern sense or a plate of beaten bronze polished so finely it served as a mirror. In either case Perseus used the shield reflection to approach Medusa without being petrified, and the gorgon's ghastly visage was forever imprinted on the shield.
