Saber is a character in Dragon Quest V.
He is a monster the Hero will always recruit, first as a cub then as a full grown adult. He is a great sabrecub in the first generation, but has grown into a great sabrecat, a large sabertooth leopard monster, by the time he is encountered again in the second generation.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
Saber is one of the names that Bianca Whitaker will suggest when you first recruit the friendly great sabrecub. He is first encountered during the Hero's childhood, when several children are bullying a small cat in Roundbeck. They agree to stop tormenting the poor cat if the Hero and Bianca fight the ghosts in the castle north of the village. After this feat is accomplished, the bullies live up to their end of the bargain and leave the cat alone.
As gratitude, Saber emotionally bonds to The Hero to become a party member for the rest of the first generation of the game. Bianca gives him an equippable Ribbon before she leaves the party. The Hero and Saber become separated at the end of the first part of the game.
They would meet again years later as adults, when the Hero is called on to save a village from a monster. The Hero learns that the "monster" has its lair in a dark cave. Saber, now an adult, will not quite remember the Hero, though he does not attack due to the Hero's scent being familiar to him. The only way to end the battle is to use Bianca's Ribbon on him, so that he recognizes the Hero and rejoins him for the rest of the game. If the Hero does defeat Saber in battle, an unlikely feat due to the great sabrecat's large amount of HP, he will be sent back outside the room and the battle will be repeatable.
Stats[edit]
As a permanent member of the party, Saber can be a very powerful ally. He cannot use magic, but has incredible Attack and Defense as well as some very powerful techniques. Saber is also one of the fastest characters in the game and often can strike before anyone else.
As the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS versions of the game allow four active party members, Saber becomes a matter of choice on usage depending on the player's style. The Hero and his son are the strongest characters in the game and the daughter can learn the best spells in the game so many players are suggested to use them. Players who like focusing on attacking may opt to use Saber or Bianca/Debora as their fourth character while players who prefer to use magic will use Nera. Note that Saber's level is capped at 20 while he is a Great sabrecub in Generation 1.

Trivia[edit]
- Saber is called Purrcy in Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below and is featured when Bianca uses her Ribbon to summon him during her High Tension super move.
- The name Purrcy is also used for his appearances in Tact and Dragon Quest: Your Story.
- In the English versions, Bianca suggests ten names for the sabercub: Saber, Leo, Spot, Mohicat, Tom, Purrcy, Mogy, Punk, Pyjamas and Baumren. If the player rejects all of them, she'll cycle through the list again.
- In the the PlayStation 2 version, the choices are the original four names from the SFC version, plus six more new ones.
- All the names Bianca picks out for the sabrecat (including Purrcy) are derived from a children's book at her home in Roundbeck.
