Dai is the main protagonist of the multimedia series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. During the story, he travels with Popp, Maam, and his friend Gomechan with the purpose of defeating Dark Lord Hadlar. He is a hero and one of the Disciples of Avan.
Appearances
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai
Dai is a young boy who dreams of becoming a Hero.
Story
Brass raises his adoptive grandchild Dai on the peaceful island of monsters, Dermline Island. Dai has always dreamt of becoming a hero, but the old lump shaman insists on raising him as a mage without much success. One day, a party of fake heroes arrives on the island, and decieves Dai, harms the friendly monsters and kidnaps Gomechan. Dai, with the help of some monster friends follows the fake heroes's ship and manages to save Gomechan. The king of the kingdom the impostors were headed to, King Romos, grants him the title of "little hero" and gives him the Crown of Champions.

Some months later, Princess Leona of Papnica, accompanied by her sage teacher Baron and the kingdom's bishop Temujin and some guards arrive to Dermline to meet the little hero and have her undergo a ritual to become a sage. Dai guides them towards the cave they need to visit, and Leona gives him the Knife of Papnica, an orichalcum weapon that has been passed down in her family. Once in the cave, Dai and Leona find an evil scorpion, which inflicts Leona with poison. It's then when Baron and Temujin reveal their complot to have Leona killed during this trip. Dai, unknowingly, unleashes the power of his dragon crest and is able to cast powerful spells he wasn't able to cast before: first Zapple to defeat the scorpion and later Kashooshle when Temujin unveils his modified killing machine and threatens to hurt Brass. Dai then cuts a hole on Temujin's armor using the Knife of Papnica and casts one last spell: Sizzle.

After saving Princess Leona, she sends Hero Avan and his apprentice Popp to Dermline. Dai soon becomes a student under Avan's guidance and learns new skills. Avan gives Dai a sped-up training course so he can become a hero quickly, teaching him the Earth Slash and Wave Slash, two of three parts of Avan's signature Avan Strash. Before Dai can learn the Air Slash, the course is cut short when the former Dark Lord Hadlar shows up to finish Avan, who is revealed to be the former Hero. After handing Dai and Popp graduation necklaces, the Insignia of Avan, the hero sacrifices himself to defeat Hadlar and protect his students, urging that they train and become strong enough to defeat the new Dark King, Vearn. Hadlar survives Avan's attacks, but is quickly overcome by Dai's strength thanks to the Dragon Crest that appeared on his head, and forced to retreat. Dai and Popp set out together to defeat the Dark Army, and eventually, the Dark King.

Section-Stub

Personality
Dai is a kind, brave, headstrong hero who fights for justice. He initially comes off as naïve but sometimes he's not an idiot, he has a mischief side and always had a strong sense of justice, largely because of a result that Dai was raised by monsters and he's the only human feral child on Dermline Island, lack of contact with humanity at large which leaves him only to assume to best intentions out of the people he meets with, being largely unable to deduce second intentions.

Dai's most defining trait is his courage because it is the secret weapon of the hero, never backing down and fighting for true justice, regardless of the difference in strength between himself and his foes, always trying to overcome his present obstacles, a trait that has won over many individuals to his side and help him, for he has a heart of a true hero. In both instances, although shocked at the malice he is witnessing, he is nonetheless brave enough to hold his ground and fight back being completely capable of discerning between right and wrong and fight against perceived wrongdoing like when Dai refused to run away from the battle of Flazzard even know the Blizzblaze Curse Field drain his powers but continue to fight, but making him stubborn and reckless as he almost got killed which made maam no choice but to knock him out to escape.

Being a feral child, Dai gets along impressively well with the monsters of Dermline Island, acting as a leader of the pack of sorts as the monsters follow his every directive with both sides treating each other as a genuine family, his love for his family is a weakness as see when his saw all monsters of Dermline Island are turning evil because as a result of Hadlar's influence.

Relationships
*Brass: Dai is the adoptive grandchild of this lump shaman.
*Avan: Dai admires Avan for vanquishing Hadlar in the past. He soon becomes his student and inherits Avan's wish for world peace.
*Popp: The hero-to-be and the mage-to-be are just students of the same teacher at first, but they quickly become best friends, with a sibling dynamic.

Abilities
Avan Style Sword Techniques

Dai possesses a natural talent for swordsmanship, already being skilled enough to defeat the Fake Heroes during their first battle. He would complete Avan's infamous Special Hard Course in only 3 days, learning the Earth Slash and Wave Slash techniques, and later master Air Slash through his own training.

*Earth Slash: A sword technique with high raw power, capable of cutting through barriers of stone and metal.
*Wave Slash: A sword technique which launches a shockwave to attack from a distance; it possesses great speed and the ability to cut through shapeless things like flames.
*Air Slash: A sword technique imbued with the Aura of Light to cut through the unseen; it is especially potent against enemies composed of Dark Aura, capable of dispelling their powers and damaging the soul directly.
*Avan Strash: A combination of the Earth, Wave and Air techniques into a single strike. Can be used as a projectile (Avan Strash Arrow) or by charging at the opponent (Avan Strash Break). Dai was able to use a version of Avan Strash even before mastering the Air technique, albeit at significantly reduced power.
*Avan Strash Cross: A self-invented combo technique which releases two Avan Strashes with precise timing (an Arrow followed by a Break) so that both impact the target at the same time, producing a dramatically stronger effect. After Giga Strash, it is considered Dai's strongest attack.

Magic spells

While Dai's adoptive father Brass was a competent Mage who contracted him with many spells, he has little natural talent for the art, initially struggling with even a basic Frizz. While his Dragon Crest is active his mana control improves to around that of an average Mage, allowing him to cast mid-tier spells like Frizzle. Dai would also undergo training to master Zapple and later Levizoom as counters to specific opponents.

*Frizz / Frizzle - Low- and mid-tier Fire element attack spells
*Whoosh / Swoosh - Low- and mid-tier Wind element attack spells
*Sizz - The most basic area-of-effect Fire spell
*Crack - The most basic Ice element attack spell
*Zapple - A Hero-exclusive spell which calls down a lighting bolt from above
*Boom - Flings a ball of light from the caster's hand which explodes on impact
*Levizoom - A refined version of the Zoom spell which can be used for fully-controlled flight

Dai can indirectly access Kazap by casting a Zapple spell into the Sword of Dai and using its sheath to amplify its effects. While never shown in the story, this could presumably be used to replicate Kafrizz, Kaswoosh, Kacrack and Kaboom as well.

Magic Sword

Dai possesses the Dragon Knight ability to channel attack spells into his weapon, even without his Dragon Crest active. He has used this to create the following additional techniques:
*Fire Earth Slash: An Earth Slash imbued with the power of Frizz.
*Zapple Strash: An Avan Strash imbued with the power of Zapple, used as a finishing move.
*Giga Break: A Dragon Knight finishing move copied from Baran, a two-handed sword charge imbued with the power of lightning; before receiving the Sword of Dai's spell-enhancing sheath, Dai's version is weakened due to using a Zapple spell in place of the intended Kazap.
*Giga Strash: A variation of Giga Break in which Dai switches to an Avan Strash motion midway through his charge, greatly increasing its cutting power.

Dragon Crest

As a halfblood Dragon Knight, in times of stress Dai manifests a glowing crest on his forehead shaped like a stylised dragon's head. In this state he combines the spirit of Humans with the monstrous strength of Dragons and the magical power of Darklings, allowing him to decapitate a Hydra with his bare hands and cast spells beyond his usual limits (such as Frizzle and initially Levizoom). In time Dai gains the ability to call upon this power at will, though initially he is vulnerable to burning through the crest's power too quickly and exhausting himself.

During his battle with the true Dragon Knight Baran, Dai's strong emotions and predominantly human blood have the unprecedented effect of causing his Human power to overflow and concentrate his Dragon and Darkling powers into a single part of his body; this shifts Dai's crest from his head to his fist and makes it far easier to control, allowing him to draw on its power of Draconic Aura to make his skin harder than steel and imbue his attacks with tremendous destructive power which disrupts healing magic.

After Baran bequeaths all his power to Dai, he becomes a unique "Super Dragon Knight" with crests on both hands. In this state his strength rises beyond even Baran's berserk Dragonoid form, and he gains access to the accumulated combat instincts of generations of Dragon Knights as well as the Crest Beam and Doruora techniques. Dai later reveals that he can boost his strength even further by recombining his crests to transform into a Dragonoid himself, though his version lacks the wings and scales of Baran's.

DQStars
Dai appeared in multiple crossover events with the Japanese version of this game. Many Dai equipment was available to players as gacha items, some of them even have Alchemy and Awakening.

Jump Force
Dai is a playable character in Jump Force (spoiler warning for his gameplay)

Special moves:

Avan Strash A - The Avan Strash Arrow type, a ranged attack that costs just 1 Ability Gauge point.

Avan Strash B - The Avan Strash Break type, a close-up attack that costs 2 Ability Gauge points.

Avan Strash C - Dai's very own Avan Strash Cross type, which is not a selectable special move. You perform it in game by using an Avan Strash A, then Avan Strash B before the first Avan Strash hits, effectively costing 3 Ability Gauge points.

Dragonic Aura Release - After activation, your Ability Gauge is slowly drained, but you do increased damage and take reduced damage from physical attacks. You must have at least 3 Ability Gauge points to use the ability.

Giga Strash - Dai's ultimate attack. When his Awakening Gauge is at least half full, he can spend it to use Giga Strash. He casts Zapple and sheathes his Sword of Dai, then dashes at the enemy with a barrage of punches until he can use an Avan Strash that resembles Baran's Gigabreak.

Awakening: Dragonoid/Ryumajin

When Dai's Awakening Gauge is at least half full, he can transform into his Dragonoid form. He moves his Dual Dragon Crests to his head and unleashes both of their full power to take the form of a true Dragon Knight.

:::We had a discussion at Dragon's Den concerening Spell Article names, which resulted in a policy that was developed. Currently, the article for Nimzo doesn't exist, but the one for Mortamor does (with redirects from Mortamor, Deathmore, and Deathtamoor). I think any new policy for Character Article names, or weapons, armor, items, game titles, should be discussed both here and at least at the Dragon's Den message board before it is decided and implemented. zenithian 10:36, 18 October 2010 (CDT) One more thing to consider, some localization names have already been been used to describe different things (see Antidote) or had their new localization later reverted (example: Erdrick > Loto > Erdrick (in Dragon Quest IX)) or changed (see Baikiruto).zenithian 11:30, 19 October 2010 (CDT)

I didn't add them yet since they have been called different names by different fans, the same with Granvania, Glanvania, Granbania and a few others. But yes, those names would be appropriate. --Zenithian 10:13, 28 December 2007 (EST)

Pages with all of the various names (monsters, items, characters, etc.) can be created (ie. a page for Herb, Medical Herb, and Medicinal Herb), but the main "Herb" page would have all of the info, and "Medical Herb" and "Medicinal Herb" would redirect to the "Herb" page, or the "Loto" and "Roto" pages would redirect to the "Erdrick" page, etc. Redirects are very easy to create, and by having redirects for all numerous names for the same thing, people will be able to go directly to the page they want, if they type something in the search box and hit the "Go" button.
About the organisation of pages of spells with changed names
Hi, I wanted to talk about something I found weird on this wiki.

It's about the pages about spells where the names got changed over the series because of other spells introduced.
An example is the Zap line of spells:
On older entries, we mostly had ライデイン(raidein) => Zap; ギガデイン(gigadein) => Kazap
However on later games, they also featured the lower tier spell of that line. But since the name "Zap" couldn't be simplified anymore they altered the translations as デイン(dein) => Zap; ライデイン(raidein) => Zapple; ギガデイン(gigadein) => Kazap

Which means that what was known as "Zap" on earlier games is actually "Zapple", and a different "Zap" that what we have now.

However, the Wiki has the same page for "Zap".

I understand they wanted to have things more clear on one page per name, but I think it makes things actually a bit more complex. Because they are, in fact, not the same thing if you see Zap in DQ8 for example and in DQ11. It is not consistent what with the spells actually are and how they are originally named.

We could even say that, if the Wiki wanted to have one page per name, they should even have a separate page for the spells with the old Enix localisations. I don't think it's really the good way to go.

I think it's better to just have a more consistent and coherent way of organising this. For example, you go on DQ3 Hero's page, see the spell list, click on Zap, and it redirects to the Zapple page, with some kind of warning or notice on the top of the page saying like "what was called as Zap before is now Zapple" and a redirect to the other one.

Another example of this is with the Crag line of spells. The earth type of spell line being Crag, Craggle, Kacrag, Kacraggle were originally called a different way in the localisation, being: Rubblerouser, Boulderbringer, Mountainmover, Ridgeraiser. They got re-translated to fit more the naming conventions of the series later on.
Despite being mere renames, the Wiki puts those on separate pages, which is just redundant and makes things even more confusing. It's not really confusing or hard to have check Erik's page, click on Rubblerouser, and have the Wiki redirect to Crag.

Then again, we don't have separate pages for the spells when they were named on older names like Hurt for old Enix localisations because it was probably redeemed useless. It's also the same thing here, we should have more consistency in what we actually show.

We also don't have a different page for each monster when they get a new localisation. (Example: the monster previously localised as Gasmon in Tact got re-translated as Buntzenburner on DQM3)
Once you've done that test out the upload wizard feature as well and tell me how that goes, I can manually add if you if doesn't automatically synch (Follower of Light (talk) 00:11, 7 December 2025 (UTC))

Naming Conventions
On naming conventions: Sounds pretty good to me. So the articles on the final bosses of Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VI would be listed under Mirudraas and Deathmore respectively? (Since their names were first localized in Dragon Warrior Monsters.) I ask because both bosses are conspicuously absent from the list of articles to create. --NecroMalroth 10:07, 27 December 2007 (EST)

:This might be confusing for those of us who only really got into a series with newer (Square Enix) localizations (e.g. Deathmore and Mirudraas doesn't sound right like Mortamor or Nimzo). --Melios 05:34, 17 October 2010 (CDT)

::I agree with Melios, but considering this conversation is about 3 years old, we will have to revisit all the policies and make sure they are up to date and make sense. --FlyingRagnar 10:02, 18 October 2010 (CDT)

I have started a new thread to discuss the localization policy on the forums. Please read it and express your opinion.
