Erdrick (ロト, Roto) is a recurring title awarded to legendary heroes from the Dragon Quest series, and specifically the playable characters of Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest XI. The first three Dragon Quest games are called the "Erdrick Trilogy", as each relate to the character of Erdrick in some way. Although they do not appear in Dragon Quest or Dragon Quest II, Erdrick is mentioned heavily in the game dialog and many items bear their name.

The name Erdrick is referenced in many of the later main Dragon Quest games, as well as some spin-offs. Due to the name being exclusively used in association with the protagonist of III for several decades, the title was treated as the character's name by both fans and media. With the arrival of XI, this connection has steadily lessened and the term Erdrick has become a title of status independent of any particular character.

For the two characters who received this title, see:
*Hero (Dragon Quest III)
*Luminary (Dragon Quest XI)

Origins of Title
At the end of Dragon Quest III the King of Alefgard bestows upon the hero the Order of Erdrick, the country’s highest honor reserved only for true heroes. This implies that there have been several Erdricks throughout history. The hero is referred to by this title in all references outside of Dragon Quest III.

Attempting to name the hero "Erdrick" in Dragon Quest III for the NES will generate a message requesting the player to enter their real name; however, if a space is added at the end, the warning message will not be displayed and the game may be played with the hero being named "Erdrick ". The same restriction applies in the Japanese versions for Roto as well, both in kanji and hiragana.

In the ending sequence of Dragon Quest XI, the Luminary is bestowed the title of Erdrick for saving the land of Erdrea from Calasmos. As the game contains several homages to past titles, the connection of III and XI (if any) is up to player interpretation.

Localization history
Erdrick is a term invented for the North American release of the original trilogy. In the original Japanese version games Erdrick is known exclusively by the name Roto--this is written in runes on the shield bearing the name in official art. Another romanization of the name is Loto, which was used in place of Erdrick when Enix America, Inc. re-released Dragon Quest I, II, and III on the Game Boy Color. This was done due to the space constraints of the game boy's screen, with the "L" being chosen for unknown reasons.

When Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies was released in North America and Europe, the name Erdrick was once again used to refer to the legendary hero of Dragon Quest III, effectively returning to the original English localization from the NES era.

Items Iconography
In Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II, there are several items that bear Erdrick as a part of their names. See the Erdrick Equipment article for more detail.

Erdrick’s sword
Also know as the Sword of kings, this is the most powerful sword in Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest III. The sword is not the most powerful in Dragon Quest XI, but boasts an incredibly high attack bonus nonetheless.

Erdrick’s Armour
The most powerful armour in the original trilogy, which protects against the damage from poison swamps and barriers, and restores HP while walking. It is also known as Armour of Erdrick in Dragon Quest II and as Auroral Armour in Dragon Quest III.

The Shield of Erdrick
The Hero's Shield is the name found in Dragon Quest II. It is called the Shield of Erdrick only in Dragon Quest III, as it does not exist in Dragon Quest.

The Helmet of Erdrick
This item exists only in Dragon Quest II, as there is no specific helm referred to as such in Dragon Quest III. In the remakes the player can acquire Ortega's helmet, which bears a distinct similarity to Erdrick's helmet from II.

Erdrick’s Emblem
An object which proves the hero's lineage in Dragon Quest, which is found in a swamp south of Cantlin. In III, the emblem is referred to as the Sacred amulet.

Erdrick's Tablet
A message written in stone by the hero of Dragon Quest III, and left for the hero in Dragon Quest. It gives instructions on what items are needed to reach the Isle of Dragons, which is the location of Charlock Castle. The tablet is found in a cave north of Tantegel castle, called Erdrick's Cave.
Other References to Erdrick
*In the opening scene of Dragon Quest V, the protagonist's father, Pankraz, suggests the name "Madason" for his son. His wife, Madalena, disagrees, and suggests the name which the player entered. If the player already entered the name "Madason", Pankraz will suggest "Erdrick" instead.
*In the US translation of Dragon Quest VI (Nintendo DS and Cell phone Version), an NPC in Gallows Moor goes by the name of Erdrick.
*In the original Final Fantasy, a role-playing game produced by Square, there is a grave for Erdrick (in the remakes and the original Japanese version of Final Fantasy, the name is Link).
*Erdrick's sword is wielded by a mark in Final Fantasy XII. It is referred to as the "Wyrmhero Blade" (In the Japanese version, it's called the Tolo Sword).
*In the demo for Dragon Quest Builders, the player's default name is "Buildrick".
*In Fortune Street, if certain characters are on the Alefgard board, they will refer to Erdrick either by name or indirect reference:
The Hero of Dragon Quest XI, known as the Luminary within his story, is a young man from the sleepy village of Cobblestone. After participating in a coming-of-age ceremony, he finds out he is the reincarnation of an ancient Hero who once saved the world. On his 16th birthday, he sets out on his journey in order to fulfill his destiny.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Luminary has been given the default name Eleven (イレブン) in order to differentiate him from the other three Heroes appearing in the game, following the naming convention seen in the promotional material of other games.

Appearance and Personality
He is a young man with blue eyes and dirty blond chin-length hair in a bob cut. On his left hand, he bears a mysterious mark that has appeared since the day he was born. The mark glows when the Luminary is in danger. He wears a long, sleeveless brown and purple leather tunic over a black long-sleeved shirt, brown trousers, and tan leather boots. Around his waist, he wears a leather belt with a small bag attached and he carries a scabbard across his back. The Luminary's good looks and hair are commented on by various characters.

Like the heroes before him, the Luminary is a silent protagonist. However, several different characters say various things that seem to acknowledge or imply a few personality traits. Like a handful of other heroes in the series, he seems to have a tendency to sleep in, which various party members will comment on. A mischievous streak is also acknowledged, as two flashbacks mention pranks that he played during his childhood. He is also implied to have a more serious and grown-up demeanor during the events of the second act. Last but not least, in many lines of Party Chat dialogue and even one or two cutscenes, Erik makes comments about the Hero that seem to imply quite a few different personality traits the latter may have.

Appearances
DQ11
start
The Luminary is long-lost son of King Irwin and Queen Eleanor, the late rules of the fallen kingdom Dundrasil and the grandson of Rab. His birth his heralded as the reincarnation of Erdwin, the hero of legend and enemy of the fabled Dark One. When he was a newborn, his parents were ambushed during a summit of the kings of the world to discuss the legend of the Luminary and what the prophecy will hold for the world, being held in the castle of Heliodor. The assault would lead to the death of Queen Elanor as she gave her son to Jade, the princess of Heliodor to hide away and remained as a decoy to buy her time, and the assassination of King Irwin by the archfiend Mordegon, who would possess the the King of Heliodor to rule from the shadows.

Though Jade is able to escape the castle grounds, she loses her footing and the basket the Luminary is held is falls into a river and over a waterfall. By an unknown miracle the boy is unharmed, and the next day the basket is found by Chalky, a resident of the small village of Cobblestone. A letter explaining the Luminary's heritage is enclosed in the basket, and Chalky takes the infant in and raises him as his grandson. Chalky's daughter Amber assumes the role of his mother, and the Luminary is raised as an ordinary boy in the village until his 16th birthday. Upon performing the traditional rite of manhood by climbing Cobblestone Tor, with his childhood friend Gemma tagging along. When reaching the top of the rocky spire to complete the ceremony, Gemma is attacked by a monster and the Luminary's powers awaken in order to save her, casting a lightning spell that the entire village sees from the top of the tor. When the duo make it home safely, the truth is revealed to the Luminary and he is instructed to depart for Heliodor to learn more of his destiny. Unbeknownst to him, King Carnelian is still possessed by Mordegon, who proclaims that the Luminary is in fact the Darkspawn, who will bring ruin to the world if left unopposed. The Luminary is captured and is awaiting his execution in the dungeon when he encounters Erik, a former thief who was imprisoned for stealing a priceless artifact from the castle. Erik has been told by a prophet that journeying with the Luminary will ease his troubled past, and the two make a prison break while being pursued by the captain of the Heliodor guard, Hendrik.

After escaping through a teleportal shrine that leads them to the city of Hotto, the duo encounter a diminutive sorceress named Veronica who identifies the Luminary immediately and coerces him into helping rescue her hapless sister Serena from a band of monsters. Upon the successful rescue, the sisters reveal themselves to be the Keepers--magic users from the city of Arboria who have sworn an oath to keep the Luminary safe at all costs and join the party. The group sets out to assemble the Six Orbs that will grant access to the floating tree Yggdrasil and allow the Luminary to save the world. The party travels to each major kingdom and city to uncover clues to each orb's location, first stopping at Gallopolis and aiding the witless prince while the flamboyant Sylvando insists upon joining the mission. The group's reward for the assistance is the Rainbough, an enchanted branch of Yggdrasil that guides the party to the nearest orb.

From there, the party departs from Gondolia in Sylvando's personal vessel and makes its way to Octagonia after learning that an orb is one of the prizes for winning the city's martial arts tournament. Allying with the local orphanage caretaker and fighting superstar Vince Vanquish, the Luminary enters the tournament and fights his way to the semi-finals. It is here that the Luminary encounters Jade and Rab for the first time in sixteen years, though being fellow participants in the tournament they keep their relation to the young man a secret at first. After resolving Vince's dependence on performance enhancers created by a monstrous spider that lurks underneath Octagonia, he and the Luminary agree to a one-on-one match for the finale to allow him to retire with dignity now that his body is weakening. With the orb now in hand the group stops by the ruins of Dundrasil with Jade and Rab accompanying. It is here where the teo explain their history with the Luminary, reveal the truth of Dundrasil's fall, and are ambushed by Hendrik and his soldiers. Taking a dive off the same waterfall the fell down before with Jade, the Luminary escapes his would-be captors.

Recovering after the incident, the newly expanded party continues their globe trotting adventure and retrieves the remaining orbs from Puerto Valor, the undersea kingdom of Nautica, the ruins of Zwaardsrust, and the frozen northern territory of Snifleheim. With all six orbs assembled, the Luminary and his companions enter the city of Arboria and ascend into Yggdrasil itself. Reaching the core of the tree, the Luminary retrieves the sword of light and is ambushed by Jasper and King Carnelian. Jasper is protected by a barrier of darkness and defeats the party while Mordegon exists Carnelian's body and destroys Yggdrasil. The party is scattered to the corners of the world by a desperate Veronica, and the end of the world begins.

Several months pass, and the Luminary awakens in the form of a fish in Nautica. Queen Marina used her magic to transform him into this state to hide him from Mordegon. Nautica is being besieged by one of the archfiend's Spectral Sentinels, Alizarin, and is blown to the surface by the Queen after restoring his form. The Luminary is rescued by a fisherman and sees that the Heliodor region is draped in perpetual darkness. Making his way to the ruins of Cobblestone, he finds the village has been turned into a shelter for refugees fleeing Mordegon's forces by Hendrik and Carnelian. Allying with a repentant Hendrik, the Luminary assaults the occupied Heliodor castle and kills Tyriant to restore light to the land. With the first blow against Mordegon's dominion over the world being struck and the Heliodor soldiers protecting Cobblestone, the Luminary and Hendrik set out to reassemble the party and confront the archfiend in his Fortress of Fear.
The Hero of XI, under the name Eleven, appears as one of four Hero Smashes, alongside the Heroes of III, IV, and VIII. He is the default Hero, and wields the Supreme Sword of Light and Erdwin's Shield.

While playing as the Hero in Classic Mode, Eleven appears as Round 2's opponent and is fought at Yggdrasil's Altar. He is allied with a tiny, female Robin wearing her red alternate costume, in reference to Veronica.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
As part of a collaborative series of events to commemorate Dragon Quest titles, the Luminary appeared as a summonable vision shortly after the international release of the game.

Etymology
A luminary is a person of prominence or great achievement, and the word can also be used to refer to one of the celestial bodies that gives off visible light. Specifically, this latter definition is used for the moon and sun in most astronomical discourse and in the context of XI's story it refers to the populations' reverence of Erdwin's lantern.

Trivia
* The Luminary is the first protagonist to not be referred to as Yuusha (勇者) in promotional material nor the game itself. Instead, the title of Shujinkō (主人公) is used, which means protagonist in Japanese.
* The Luminary has some similarities with some of the heroes from previous games:
** He comes from a lineage of previous heroes, much like the original Hero and the Prince of Midenhall.
** He sets out on his journey on his 16th birthday, similar to Erdrick. As the story advances, he is able to wield the Sword of Light, also known as Erdrick's sword in other games.
** He was born with a mysterious mark on his left hand known as the Mark of Light, much like the Hero of Dragon Quest VII. It grants him with mysterious powers and glows in times of danger.
** His inability to advance past the second tier of explosive spells is a reference to Erdrick and Solo, who are also only able to learn up to Boom.
**His family connections make him similar to both Erdrick and Eight, as well. The Luminary finds out that his father, Irwin, was a great warrior himself much like Ortega. He is also secretly a prince from the kingdom of Dundrasil as revealed by Rab, his maternal grandfather, much like Eight finding out about his royal lineage from his grandfather, Chen Mui.
* In the international version of the game, there is a special costume that allows him to dress up like the Hero from VIII. The outfit was added for the S: definitive edition version of the game in all regions.
* He is the first hero in the main series to have a voice actor in the English version of the games. English actor Rasmus Hardiker provides his vocal grunts in various scenes and in battle.
* In the international fan poll for Dragon Quest XI released by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, the Luminary was voted the third most popular male character in the game and the fifth most popular character overall, with a total of 289 votes.
* The Luminary has the same hairstyle as Android 17 of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series, as well as a similar physique.

The Nintendo Switch is the seventh home video game console released by Nintendo. The console is the successor to the Wii U and it competes with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One console in the 8th generation of video game systems.

Known in development by its codename NX, it was unveiled in October 2016, subsequently revealed as the Switch in January 2017, and was released worldwide on March 3rd, 2017. A second handheld-only model of the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite, was released later on September 20th, 2019. A third model featuring improvements to the original conolse, the Nintendo Switch (OLED model), is set to be released in October 8th, 2021. The Switch is considered a "hybrid" console; it is designed primarily as a home console, with the main unit inserted onto a docking station to connect to a television. Alternatively, it can be removed from the dock and used similarly to a mobile tablet, or placed in a standalone tabletop position visible to several players. The Switch uses Joy-Con wireless controllers, although Pro Controllers are also available as separate purchases for a more traditional controller.

**"Just one time only, I wish to fight in battle with legendary hero, Erdrick." (Alena)
**"The restful place from legendary hero Erdrick. I am with wish that there was opportunity to meet him." (Kiryl)
**"Maybe the hero was a bit like my big brother, Alistair. You know, just maybe." (Jessica Albert)
**"... A legendary hero? If he's such a legend, maybe he should take my place while I'm out to lunch!" (Stella)
**"My anslurpstors fought alongside the legendary hero from here. I bet they were really stout!" (Slime)
**"This place has got some legendary hero, huh? I'm acquainted wid a hero myself as it happens. ... Some mortal schmoo who's always gettin' in our way!" (Platypunk)
**"I guess Erdrick is the big cheese around these parts! I tip my hat to you, legendary hero!" (Mario)
**"Whoa! Alefgard! I want to meet the legendary dragon warrior Erdrick! But I forgot my camera! Wah-hah!" (Toad)
**"Yoshi Yoshi! (Erdrick may be the big hero in these parts, but Mario is the bestest hero in the galaxy!)" (Yoshi)
**"Yoo hoo! Oh, hero-man! Won't you come and rescue me? I'm helpless when it comes to rolling the die!" (Birdo)
**"Legendary hero, shmegendary hero! My dad’s way braver than any ol’ hero!" (Bowser Jr.)
**"Ooo? Ook ook! (This is the place to find hotshot heroes, huh? Well, you’re looking at one!)" (Donkey Kong)
**"If it's a legendary hero you want, look no further! I'm standing right here! Whee hee hee!" (Waluigi)
**"I don’t believe for a second in this legendary hero. If he DID exist, he’d be rescuing me right now!" (Princess Peach)
*Dragonlord also mentions Erdrick in Fortune Street when he lands on an expensive property owned by Princessa.
**"Waaargh! Dim kin of Erdrick and his sin! Thou trowest me beat by these puny bills!?"
Fortune Street (in Europe, Boom Street) is part of the Itadaki Street series of video games, starting with Itadaki Street Special. It is similar to Itadaki Street DS, sharing many of the same characters and boards as that game. At the 2011 E3 conference, it was announced that Fortune Street would be published in North America for the 2011 holiday season by Nintendo.

Fortune Street features online play via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, a first in the Itadaki Street series.

Gameplay
In Fortune Street, each player will use a Mii, rather than one of the Dragon Quest or Super Mario characters featured in the game, though it may be possible to look like these characters if the outfits may be obtained in the shop.

Fortune Street is similar to Monopoly in that players roll one die to advance around a board, purchasing property and collecting money. The game differs from Monopoly in that players can buy and sell stocks of a district and are not so limited in how property may be developed.

The combined value of the player's stocks, property value, and cash on hand is used to determine a player's net worth. When a player meets the required net worth for victory, all a player needs to do to win is return to the starting position/bank.

Game Spaces
*Unclaimed Property can be bought for the price listed on the sign; unlike previous Itadaki games, the initial rent amout is not listed on the game board sign.
*For Sale can be bought for 200 or 1000, depending on the type of building you want to put up on the property. The type of building can be changed later in the game by paying for a remodel.
*<span style="color:blue">Spade</span>, <span style="color:green">Clover</span>, <span style="color:orange">Diamond</span>, <span style="color:red">Heart</span> a full set is needed to earn a promotion at the bank; landing on one of these will allow you to choose a card.
*<big>?</big> allows you to choose a card.
*Warps and Pipes will send you to the corresponding warp/pipe end.
*Switches causes the board layout to change.
*Stars landing on this space allows you to collect a portion of money lost by opponents until your next turn.
*Casino random chance to play the round the blocks, pick a slime to win in a race, pick a block in memory block, or dart throw.
*Crescent Moon stopping here will have you take a day off, so any opponents landing on your property will not pay. This condition lasts until your next turn.
*Bank passing here allows you to buy stock; if you have all four suits you earn a promotion and get a pay packet (i.e. more money). Landing on this space allows you to pick your direction on the next turn.
*Stock Market Tower landing here will allow you to buy stock.

Acquiring Property
Players can purchase unowned property they land on; in addition, if a player has enough net worth, they may steal an opponent's property they land on by paying 5 times the current property value to the opponent. Acquiring additional property already owned by an opponent is expensive, but can be a useful strategy when a player owns other properties of that district or when an opponent owns the whole district.

Collecting Money
Players can collect additional money by earning promotions as they land on or pass the bank, but only after they have collected a set of four suits: heart, diamond, clover and spade. Players also earn money when opponents land on their property; the larger the building, the higher the amount collected from an opponent. If a player has stock in a district, they can also collect money when any player lands on an opponent's space, or additional money if an opponent lands on a player controlled space. The amount collected in this manner depends on the player's share of the total amount of stock in the district and the value of the property landed on.

Stock in a District
Stock can be purchased only at the bank, by landing on the Stock Market Tower, or by getting lucky with a card. Stock is bought in sets of 1 to 99 shares, and can only be purchased for one district at a time. The current per share prices for each district are shown in the left column, with each player's current holdings in a given district shown on the corresponding row. Large stock purchases can increase the per share value, and when a property is developed, the per share price in that district will increase in relation to the level of money spent on development. Selling off stock in sets of 10 shares or more will decrease the per share value. Stock can be sold at the beginning of a player's turn; stock in more than one district may be sold before a player rolls the die to move.

Developing Property
Unlike Monopoly, it is not necessary to own the entire district to develop a property, though controlling more than one property of a district allows the player to develop the properties into much larger buildings than if they only owned one property; a player controlling an entire district can develop it to its maximum potential. To develop a property, a player must first land on a property they control. They then have the option to develop one of their properties via a Yes/No question. The amount of development can range between 1 and 999. If the maximum amount displayed is less than 999, then the player can only develop the property to that level until additional property in the district is acquired, increasing the maximum amount by which each of the properties may be developed.

Winning
To win, a player must be the first to make it back to the bank when their net worth is equal to or greater than the board's required amount for victory; the game also ends immediately in the event of a bankruptcy.

Shop and Mii Customization
After a board is completed, win or lose, the player earns stamps that may be used in the shop to buy new outfits, walks, and roles.

Itadaki Street DS is a continuation of the Itadaki Street series on the Nintendo DS. It includes characters from Square Enix's Dragon Quest series and Nintendo's Super Mario franchises. It was released in Japan in 2007.

At the 2011 E3 conference, it was announced that the game would be ported to the Wii. In North America, it was released as Fortune Street for the 2011 holiday season, and was published by Nintendo.

Gameplay
Itadaki Street is similar to Monopoly in that players roll one die to advance around a board, purchasing property and collecting money. The game differs from Monopoly in that players can buy and sell stocks of a block and are not as limited in how property may be developed.

The combined value of the player's stocks, property value, and gold on hand is used to determine a player's net worth. When this amount is highlighted in yellow, then the required amount for victory on the board has been met, and all a player needs to do to win is return to the starting position/bank.

Game Spaces
*Unclaimed Property can be bought for the price listed on top; amount collected from opponents appears at bottom, in larger font.
*For Sale can be bought for 200G or 1000G, depending on the type of building you want to put up on the property: toll booth, pub, balloon, crypt, bazaar, or tower. The type of building can be changed later in the game by paying for a remodel.
*<span style="color:blue">Spade</span>, <span style="color:green">Clover</span>, <span style="color:orange">Diamond</span>, <span style="color:red">Heart</span> a full set is needed to level up/collect additional money at the bank; landing on one of these will allow you to choose a card.
*<big>?</big> allows you to choose a card.
*Warps and Pipes will send you to the corresponding warp/pipe end.
*Switches causes the board layout to change.
*Stars landing on this space allows you to collect a portion of money lost by opponents until your next turn.
*Casino random chance to play the slots, bet on a monster fight, pick a warp pipe, or have fortune told.
*Inn stopping here for the night will allow your opponents to land on your property for free until you wake up on your next turn.
*Bank passing here allows you to buy stock; if you have all four suits you level up and get more money. Landing on this space allows you to pick your direction on the next turn.
*Seed landing here will allow you to buy stock.

Acquiring Property
Players can purchase unowned property they land on; in addition, if a player has enough net worth, they may steal an opponent's property they land on by paying 5 times the current property value to the opponent. Acquiring additional property already owned by an opponent is expensive, but can be a useful strategy when a player owns other properties of that block or when an opponent owns the whole block.

Collecting Money
Players can collect additional money by leveling up as they land on or pass the bank, but only after they have collected a set of four suits: heart, diamond, clover and spade. Players also earn money when opponents land on their property; the larger the building, the higher the amount collected from an opponent. If a player has stock in a block, they can also collect money when any player lands on an opponent's space, or additional money if an opponent lands on a player controlled space. The amount collected in this manner depends on the player's share of the total amount of stock in the block and the value of the property landed on.

Stock in a Block
Stock can be purchased only at the bank, by landing on the seed space, or by getting lucky with a card. Stock is bought in sets of 1 to 99 shares, and can only be purchased for one block at a time. The current per share prices for each block are shown in the left column, with each player's current holdings in a given block shown on the corresponding row. Large stock purchases can increase the per share value, and when a property is developed, the per share price in that block will increase in relation to the level of money spent on development. Selling off stock in sets of 10 shares or more generally will decrease the per share value. Stock can be sold at the beginning of a player's turn by selecting the seed icon just to the right of the dice icon; stock in more than one block may be sold at the same time.

Developing Property
Unlike Monopoly, it is not necessary to own the entire block to develop a property, though controlling more than one property of a block allows the player to develop the properties into much larger buildings than if they only owned one property; a player controlling an entire block can develop it to its maximum potential. To develop a property, a player must first land on a property they control. They then have the option to develop one of their properties via a Yes/No question. The amount of development can range between 1 and 999. If the maximum amount displayed is less than 999, then the player can only develop the property to that level until additional property in the block is acquired, increasing the maximum amount by which each of the properties may be developed.

Winning
To win, a player must be the first to make it back to the bank when their net worth is equal to or greater than the board's required amount for victory; the game also ends immediately in the event of a bankruptcy.
Unlike Itadaki Street Special, the player is not a Dragon Quest or Super Mario character, but a boy or girl that can dress up in different outfits from those series. After selecting a gender, the player begins by choosing from eight facial styles, which do not change throughout the game. Then, the player selects from one of three hair styles, and finally from one of three sets of clothes. The hair styles and clothing not selected appear in the shop for purchase later in the game.

Outfits include hair/hats/helmets, clothes/armor, and two different sets of accessories that can be mixed and matched to a player's liking. Additional outfit items may be purchased with money earned by playing or completing various boards; some of the items can be obtained for free by winning a board.
Dragon Quest media in Super Smash Bros.
At E3 2019, the Heroes of XI, III, IV, and VIII were announced as one character simply called the Hero, announced as the 3rd DLC character and the 2nd character that is part of the Fighters Pass. The character itself was released on July 30th, 2019.

Alongside the Hero is a stage named Yggdrasil's Altar. The players fight on a large, gray platform that passes by the tree, which can be seen in the background; Slimes and Tockles cameo on the stage as well, and Cetacea can be seen flying in the background. The stage passes by other locations as well. Occasionally, treasure chests appear on the stage, and attacking them will yield an item; however, a Mimic will occasionally appear instead, and defeating it yields an item as a reward. Two tracks from each of the four games represented by the different Heroes appear on the stage as well, and the ending to the main Dragon Quest theme serves as the victory theme for the series.

The Spirits from the Dragon Quest series include the Slime, Dracky, Golem, Liquid metal slime, Great sabrecub, Cetacea, and the main party from Dragon Quest XI (Hendrik, Sylvando, Erik, Jade, Rab, Veronica and Serena, with the Slime and Great sabrecub spirits being able to be enhanced into King slime and Great sabrecat, respectively. A Spirit for the Tockles can be unlocked with save data from Dragon Quest XI S (either from the demo or the full game). Additionally, Veronica, the Erdrick Equipment, the Martial Artist class, and Slime all appear as costumes for the Mii Fighters, with Veronica and the Erdrick Equipment appearing as costumes for the Mii Swordfighter, the Martial Artist appearing as a costume for the Mii Brawler, and the Slime appearing as a hat. Notably, the Slime hat is unique in that it possesses motion physics, moving around when the Mii does as well.
Trivia
*Dragon Quest is the second Square Enix franchise to be represented in Super Smash Bros., the first being Final Fantasy.
*The Mark of Erdrick acts as the series symbol for Dragon Quest, and the ending portion of the series' famous overture acts as the victory theme.
*Super Smash Bros. Ultimate marks the first time any main series Dragon Quest character has appeared in a fighting game.
**Whilst Dai from Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken appeared in Jump Force, another crossover fighting game, he wasn't in any of the main series Dragon Quest games at all.
*This is the first time since the Itadaki Street series that Dragon Quest crossed over with the Super Mario and Final Fantasy franchises and the first time since Captain N: The Game Master that it crossed over with various other video game properties.
*A Dragon Quest character had been requested for Smash for some time, but series creator Masahiro Sakurai had long considered it impossible. Sakurai created a proposal for Square Enix, with some encouragement from Nintendo, "passionately" expressing how he wished to use the Hero; though Sakurai would have agreed to the inclusion of Slime had Square denied him the rights to the Hero, he felt the Hero offered more options, even knowing the hurdles that would come with their inclusion. To his surprise, Square Enix agreed almost immediately, as they had appreciated Sakurai's passion and felt Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was similar to Dragon Quest XI S as a game that brings together elements from previous games into one. According to Yūji Horii, within Square Enix, there were restrictions that prevented certain Dragon Quest protagonists from encountering each other, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was given special exception in order to have the different Heroes as alternate character costumes, as the restrictions have become less strict over time, especially with the mobile title Dragon Quest Rivals, and knowing the popularity of Smash, he wanted the Hero to join. Only the Heroes from XI and III were originally decided for Smash but Horii allowed two more to be added, and the Hero from VIII was added due to popularity overseas as one of the main factor, while the Hero from IV was added due to the Hero from V not using a sword and ultimately being chosen over the Hero from Dragon Quest.
*Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the first game that allows the characters of Dragon Quest to fight each other.
