Lady Lora (Princess Gwaelin) is an NPC character in the original Dragon Quest. She is the daughter of the king of Tantegel who has been kidnapped by the Dragonlord. During the game, she can be rescued by the Hero as a sidequest. This makes her the one and only sidequest present in the original Dragon Quest.

She also appears in Dragon Quest Monsters (as Lady Laura). Defeating the dragon guarding her in that game allows Terry to recruit the dragon into his party.

Rescue
The Hero may rescue Lora during his quest to defeat the Dragonlord. Lora is located inside the Swamp Cave south of Kol which connects to the southeastern continent. In order to rescue Lora, the Hero must fight and defeat a single Green Dragon. This monster is not visible on the dungeon map screen, but rather is trigger when the Hero steps on a specific tile (similar to the Golem which guards Mercado). If the Dragonlord is defeated prior to the Princess' rescue, she will still be in her cell and able to be rescued, though the Green Dragon will not be present.

After rescuing the princess, the Hero carries her back to her father at Tantegel castle. A sprite showing the hero carrying Lora is used at this time. In the remakes only, the Dragonlord has a special reaction if she is being carried when the Hero confronts him. In it, he thanks the Hero for his kindness in bringing the Princess to him.

Tantegel Castle
At Tantegel Castle, Lora gives the Hero an item called 'Lora's Love' which tells the Hero his exact distance from Tantegel on the world map at the time it is used. It is useful in finding the Token of Roto later in the game.

While at the castle, Lora occupies the empty space next to her father in the throne room. When spoken to in the NES version, she asks the Hero if he loves her. Answering yes triggers the short love music to play.

Ending
If the Hero rescued Lora during the game, then she will be present during the ending. The Hero will again carry Lora away as he leaves Alefgard after defeating the Dragonlord. If the Hero is carrying her when the ending begins, the result is much the same, though a single line is different.

The Dragonlord (King Dragon, DracoLord) is the main antagonist and final boss of the original Dragon Quest. Before the game starts, he steals the Ball of Light from Tantegel Castle, and plots to unleash his forces of darkness upon Alefgard; he kidnaps Princess Gwaelin for unknown reasons, and set one of his dragons to guard her. It is also interesting to note that the Dragonlord looks much like "Sleeping Beauty's" Maleficent, who also turns into a dark purple dragon.

At the end of Dragon Warrior, the hero defeated the Dragonlord and returned peace to all of Alefgard.

Characteristics
The Dragonlord resides in Charlock castle, which is located to the southeast across the water from Tantegel castle. Within the castle, the Dragonlord resides on the bottom-most level. Throughout the game, the Dragonlord never leaves the castle, similar to Hargon in Dragon Quest II.

When confronted by the Hero, the Dragonlord offers him the chance to split the world and rule half of it as his ally.

The Hero is then presented with an opportunity to answer 'yes' or 'no'. Answering 'no' results in the start of the battle with the Dragonlord. Answering 'yes' varies between the different versions. In the originals, the Dragonlord will give control of the World of Darkness to the hero, the screen fades to black, and the menus become red, as if the Hero had been fainted/killed in battle. He will also state he will revive the hero if he falls in battle, even giving him a password in the Japanese Version. Gameplay will stop at this point. In the remakes, accepting the offer simply causes the hero to faint, and reappear outside Tantegel Castle.

In battle, the Dragonlord appears as a humanoid sorcerer who possesses the skill of magic but is fairly weak, physically speaking. After receiving enough damage, the Dragonlord transforms into a more powerful, dragon form (his "true" form). The music also changes to the final battle theme.

Origins
<small>This section requires verification.</small>

Originally, he is an unhappy man of Alefgard who dwells in a cave. One day he explored deeper into his cave and found a dragon. He was more astonished when he found he could control the beast. From this point on, he was known as the Dragonlord, and he moved to Charlock Castle.

Descendants
In Dragon Warrior II a somewhat more friendly descendant of the Dragonlord resides in Charlock Castle.
