Murdaw (ムドー romanized as Mudou, Mudo in fan translations) appears as the initial primary antagonist in Dragon Quest VI. He terrorizes the world, and any who challenge him never return. As soon as the game begins, the player character, Carver, and Milly go to fight Murdaw. Upon reaching him, he defeats the party with ease and banishes them from his sight.

Characteristics
Murdaw is one of the four Dread Fiends, and the first one to be encountered. Though he is the weakest of the group, he is by far the most effective at causing chaos. His traps are devilishly clever, locking the kingdom of Somnia in a futile war in the upper world and completely disabling the kingdom in the lower by locking the royal family in an unwaking slumber and spiriting the prince away. Murdaw possesses the ability to be present at more than one location at the same time. While his true body remains situated in his lair within the Real World, he acts through the body of King Somnus in the Dream World, thus threatening both worlds simultaneously.

Murdaw plans far in advance, recognizing that Alltrades Abbey would produce endless enemies for him if not sealed away. Defeating him allows access to the vocation system. Murdaw is fought three times, once in the upper world and twice below.

DQ6
The game begins with the hero, Carver and Milly confronting Murdaw in his keep. Before the battle can properly start, Murdaw ambushes the trio, separating each of their bodies into two essences and banishing one part into the Dream World while spreading the other part throughout the Real World. While this act did not kill off the heroes, it severely weakened their powers and abilities and rendered the Dream World essences amnesic. The Hero's Real World counterpart was sent far away, while Carver's Real World counterpart was petrified and remained in the castle. What happened to Milly is never revealed, but her two essences found each other and combined off-screen, not too long after the incident.

Later, the heroes find Murdaw's lair in the Dream World. They engage him in battle and emerge victorious. Unfazed by the loss, Murdaw declares that he will get his revenge soon enough before attempting to teleport himself away. The heroes use Ra's Mirror on him, revealing that he is really King Somnus, whom Murdaw possessed to project himself onto the Dream World.

The heroes eventually locate the real Murdaw in the Real World, finding themselves in the same location as the beginning of the game. Murdaw attempts the same ambush on the heroes, but this time the heroes are able to counteract against this trick using Ra's Mirror. Finally cornered, Murdaw engages the heroes in an actual battle. In the first battle, he is flanked by two Prickly pranksters and can summon more, or alternatively Harmours if they are defeated. In the second battle, Murdaw reveals his true powers, putting the heroes in a gruesome final confrontation. After his second defeat, Murdaw is finally vanquished; his death lifts the seal on Alltrades Abbey.
He's slightly more powerful, and relies on debuffs rather than attack magic. Similar to Baramos, Murdaw is vulnerable to ice magic.
The Dragonlord is the main antagonist and final boss of the original Dragon Quest. Before the game starts, he steals the Sphere of Light from Tantegel Castle to unleash his forces of darkness upon Alefgard; he then kidnaps Princess Gwaelin to hold her hostage and prevent her father from challenging his new tyranny.

At the end of Dragon Quest, the hero defeated the Dragonlord and restored peace to Alefgard.

Characteristics
The Dragonlord resides in Charlock Castle, which is located to the southeast across the water from Tantegel Castle. Within the castle, the Dragonlord resides on the bottom-most level. Throughout the game, the Dragonlord never leaves the castle, similar to Hargon in Dragon Quest II.

Personality
Being the first villain of the series, the Dragonlord displays several traits that would define the archetypal arch-fiend; he is a vain, power-hungry despot who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, whether it be imprisoning a maiden deep beneath the earth or wiping an opposing town off the map just to make a point.

Though brutal and mindlessly savage at first glace, these actions are actually well planned tactics meant to secure the scaley lord's political power in Alefgard. As mentioned above the kidnapping of the princess is meant to keep the king and citizens from so much as daring to think about standing up to him, and the obliteration of the kingdom's highest commerce center meant that trade with outer lands would be crippled. Indeed, the very fact that the Dragonlord's first move in his plan was to steal the Sphere of Light shows that the would-be despot plans his actions very carefully.

When confronted by the Hero, the Dragonlord offers him the chance to split the world and rule half of it as his ally. This was an unprecedented move for a video game villain in 1986, when most antagonists had either no personality to speak of or theirs was confined to the pages of a manual. By offering to make a deal when cornered by the Hero, the Dragonlord proves that his aspirations are truly political in nature, and not blindly dedicated to chaos for chaos' sake. Indeed, Builders expands on this, indicating that he's more of a radical activist for monsters and treats them very well, being seen as a king of kings by them. Additionally he has no desire to exterminate humanity, but rather wishes for monsters to rule over them the way (in his view) humans have ruled over monsters.

In battle, the Dragonlord appears as a humanoid sorcerer who possesses the skill of magic but is fairly weak, physically speaking. After receiving enough damage, the Dragonlord transforms into a more powerful, dragon form (his "true" form). The music also changes to the final battle theme.

Select quotes
*"So, thou art come before me at last, Hero! And bearing tribute unto my glory in the form of a fair princess no less! Hm hm hm! I am honoured in deed!"
*"I am the Dragonlord, master of masters, king of kings! Long have I awaited this moment. Come! Take thy rightful place at my side! Do so, and I will grant unto thee dominion over half the world!"
*"What say'st thou? Wilt thou rule beside me?"
*"Thou art a fool!"
*" Very well. Then half of the world shall be thine. And if ever thou should fall in battle, I shall revive thee at no cost! Now, fall into a deep, dark sleep! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!"

Descendants
In Dragon Quest II, a more friendly descendant of the Dragonlord resides in the ruins of Charlock Castle. The child is very proud of his grandfather's attempt at world domination, and is very annoyed at Hargon's own attempts, seeing the effort as an upstaging of his family's legacy. He aid's the party by giving vital information regarding the 5 Sigils.

Appearances
Dragon Quest
The Dragonlord is the villain of the original game. He is the last obstacle the player must overcome before peace in Alefgard is ensured.
The original NES sprite is on the left, while the remake SNES sprite is on the right.

When spoken to, the Dragonlord will present the Hero with an opportunity to rule half of Alefgard with him. Answering 'no' results in the start of the battle with the Dragonlord. Answering 'yes' varies between the different versions. In the originals, the Dragonlord will give control of the World of Darkness to the hero, the screen fades to black, and the menus become red, as if the Hero had been fainted/killed in battle. He will also state he will revive the hero if he falls in battle, even giving him a password in the Japanese Version. Gameplay will stop at this point. In the remakes, accepting the offer simply causes the hero to faint, and reappear outside Tantegel Castle.
Dragon Quest II
The grandson of the Dragonlord resides in the same location in Dragon Quest II. He is a character of core importance as he informs the heroes of their need to collect the Crests and contact Rubiss.
Although not specifically mentioned, the Dragonlord inherits Charlock Castle sometime after Zoma was defeated by the hero at the end of Dragon Quest III. Also, according to the Emblem of Roto manga, the Dragon Queen's egg is most likely Dragonlord.
The Dragonlord appears as a Legacy Boss in Dragon Quest IX. His map can only be obtained as a rare drop from Greygnarl in grottoes. Unlike most other legacy bosses, he does not use magic, relying on breath attacks and physical strikes, and is enraged by anyone that inflicts a critical hit or haywire spell on him. Note that the Dragonlord is classified under the ??? family, which means Dragon Slash and related effects do not apply to him.

Strategy
You should have one or two healers and two main damage dealers. A character with 100 skill points in fource
and another with the minstrel's manual is important. Double up is also viable. At the start of the battle apply gale
fource and your damage buff. Have your main healer cast multiheal after every breath attack and a Sage with kazing is
to revive any party member who gets hit with a critical attack. Your main damage dealer should use a multi hit attack such as multifists or falcon slash with a falcon blade. If the boss casts disruptive wave apply your buffs again and keep hitting him until he goes down.

Dragon Quest Builders
The nature of Builders is a what-if story in which the Hero fell for the Dragonlord's ruse and took his offer for half the world. Warping the hero's mind into that of a bumbling barbarian, none stood in the Dragonlord's way as he cast the entire archipelago of Alefguard into darkness. Furthermore, the scaled sovereign placed a curse upon the population that blocked all memory of building from their minds--while a person may recognize the individual materials used to construct something, the moment they move to craft the curse activates and seals the person's memory of how the materials are used, effectively sending the population to the stone age and forcing them into an arduous existence living off the bare expanse of the despoiled land.

From his perverse perspective, the Dragonlord considered this to be an act of mercy--he states that through building humans rebel against their fates and in turn only bring upon more miserable ones to their lives. He explains that he had no choice but to muddle minds, for if he did not the world would be thrown out of balance and fall into ruin. As the Builder is the last remaining vestige of the spark of creativity, they must be snuffed out under his heel.

The Dragonlord is unimpressed with the Builder, stating they are nothing more than but a mere puppet of Rubiss. Privy to the Goddess' forsaking of the Builder near the end of Chapter four, he attempts to use this schism and uncertainty to cloud the child's mind when he is bested in his humanoid form. Offering half the world, the Dragonlord states that the Builder's role in Rubiss's scheme has ended and they should now allow themselves to be a slave to one that has already abandoned them. Whispering with a forked-tongue, he sweetens the deal by promising the land the Builder will inherit will not be one of ashen darkness that Alefguard has become, but one of light where they may build their own kingdom as they see fit. If the Builder refuses the offer, the Dragonlord points out that if they fail to defeat him then all the towns, villages, and friends they have made will be rent asunder.

Dragon Quest Builders 2
The Dragonlord is mentioned in passing by a crew member of Captain Whitebones' ship but otherwise he does not make any appearance. However, the player can unlock his throne if they have a save of Dragon Quest Builders on the same system, allowing them to temporary take his appearance whenever they sit on the throne.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
While the Dragonlord himself doesn't appear in the game, he is referenced in the Hero's Classic Mode path on the seventh and final stage. He is initially represented by Robin (from Fire Emblem: Awakening) in his blue outfit fought on Dracula's Castle (from Castlevania) in its Ω form. After Robin is defeated, a giant purple Charizard takes his place for the remainder of the fight. This two phase battle references the Dragonlord's two forms as a sorcerer and a dragon in the original Dragon Quest.

In animation
The Dragonlord appeared as an antagonist to The N Team in Captain N: The Game Master, and worked with Mother Brain in his first appearance. In the show, he is a giant red dragon and lacks a human form.

Dragonlord appears in three episodes:
*Episode 7: "Three Men & A Dragon"
*Episode 23: "Trojan Dragon"
*Episode 24: "I Wish I Was a Wombatman" (Robotic replica)

The Dragonlord is the only character from a Dragon Quest game to appear in both episodes, with a Blue dragon appearing in Episode 7, and Slimes, as well Axe knight appearing in Episode 23.

Trivia
*The Dragonlord bears a striking resemblance to Maleficent of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, with both wielding staves, donning flowing, high-collared robes, and possessing the ability to transform into large, purple dragons. Additionally, while it is unclear whether the Dragonlord has horns, a headpiece of some kind, or simply unusually-shaped hair, it is nevertheless similar in appearance to Maleficent's own horned headpiece.
*The Japanese only Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Adventure History Book states Dragonlord is related to the Dragon Queen, though due to the language used it is unknown if he is her son or a descendant further down the line.

Nokturnus is a character and recurring monster in the DQSeries that appears as a bonus superboss in DQ6, serving as the game's most powerful opponent. Outside of Dragon Quest VI, with few exceptions, he is the strongest monster in every game he appears in. Nokturnus also appears in DQ9 as the strongest legacy boss, obtained from the final quest (#184); and in DQ10 as a superboss in two occasions: the first one alone and the second one in a tag-team along with the King of Calamity.

Characteristics
Nokturnus resembles a tall, well-built human male. It resembles Dhuran, but its skintone is a shade of brown, instead of orange or red.

Another difference with Dhuran is the armor; Nokturnus' armor is more complex and has more details in comparison. The color of the armor's plates is green (this green in particular resembles the color of copper when it gets oxidized). Furthermore, the armor also has some little crimson details that look like blood veins. In DQ10 and DQH, these blood veins start emitting a malevolent red light when Nokturnus gets enraged or it is about to use a powerful attack. Its attire is completed with a cape. This cape is black or dark grey on the outside and scarlet on the inside, therefore differing from the one that Dhuran wears since that one is indigo on both the outside and the inside.

Nokturnus is equipped with a double-bladed weapon. In most of its appearances, this weapon has a dark purple handgrip and the blades are irregular, giving the impression that, like Nokturnus' armor, it is made of oxidized copper; however in its Dragon Quest Heroes appearance, the blades are bigger and sharper and now violet with some golden demonic decorations.
Strategy
You can either level-build to the 70s and use a standard strategy, or you can try your hand against him at high 40s.

You'll want several characters in the Hero vocation, with two MP-heavy characters as Sages (equip the Duplic Hat on one if you have it). The caster focusing on Omniheal user should have a Meteorite Bracer equipped at all times. Keep your buffs to a minimum if you want to avoid Nokturnus' negation; he appears to use Disruptive Wave more often when more than one character has Oomph up, or several supportive buffs are in place. If you want to avoid your buffs getting nulled, limit yourself to one Oomph and one Kabuff. Otherwise, reapply your support spells after each Disruptive Wave.

Heroes should attack by using Gigaslash every round. A Hero with Oomph active should use Focus Strength and Knuckle Sandwich. Your Sages should unleash Magic Burst as soon as possible. Once both Sages drop their attacks, switch in your fourth Hero, who will be a dedicated Hustle Dancer to keep health up. If a Hero should run out of MP using Gigaslash, the Hustle Dancer will exchange roles with him/her. Swap in your healer at any moment you find more healing power is necessary.

Alternatively, you can have one party member master the Liquid Metal Slime and Paladin classes. That one member will act as the party's shield by using the Paladin's Forbearance skill, with one Buff always active to reduce the damage caused by Nokturnus. Liquid Metal Slime vocation mastery yields high defence and immunity to all elements, proving as a very useful tank for the party. The other members should use the same attack strategies as above. Keep in mind Nokturnus has abilities that can slip by Forbearance, so an occasional Hustle Dance should be done to keep your party safe. Again, an Omniheal user is always a good idea in case your tank begins to falter. Reapply Buff on the party defender if Nokturnus negates it.

If you defeat Nokturnus, there is a chance of it dropping a Liquid Metal Mind. If you manage to defeat Nokturnus in less than 20 turns, you will be treated to a special scene.
*Nokturnus was supposed to be the last boss of Dragon Warrior Monsters, but was cut off.
*Nokturnus is the only Legacy Boss in Dragon Quest IX to drop more than one color orb, and is the only monster in the Defeated Monster List that can be fought multiple times to have only one item drop listed. This is because, like all other Legacy Bosses, he always drops a Mini medal upon defeat, but the orb he drops varies with his level, and the costume items are not listed for any of the Legacy Bosses.

Mortamor is a character and recurring monster in the DQSeries that appears as the main antagonist and final boss of DQ6. He is the mysterious Archfiend who sent Murdaw, Jamirus, Gracos, and Dhuran to conquer the Lower World and the Upper World. He lurks in his dreadlair seated at the far reaches of a hellish dimension known as the Dread Realm.

Characteristics
When first confronted, Mortamor appears to be an old demon with gold orbs levitating before each of his hands. Mortamor himself states that this is merely a facade and will, upon first defeat, emerge from the two fused golden orbs as a hulking, winged demon with spiked shoulders. When this form is defeated Mortamor will literally cast aside his body, becoming the disembodied demonic face and pair of hands he is best known as.

Mortamor is similar to Zoma in that he influences the world through proxies, preferring to revel in the suffering of the humans trapped in his living nightmare than do his own dirty work. Mortamor's plans are more precise than his Erdrick trilogy counterpart, however; rather than sending one lieutenant to cause undirected chaos, Mortamor uses four agents to target specific bastions of the mortal realm that would inhibit his conquest. By sealing away Alltrades Abbey, Medford's manor, Sorceria, and Cloudsgate Citadel, Mortamor displays a keen understanding of the capabilities of humans and their potential to overthrow him should he attack directly.

Personality-wise, Mortamor is extremely arrogant, condescending and egotistical, even in comparison to the other Demon Lords of the franchise. He does not view the heroes as threats whatsoever, even after they overcame his numerous assets. Even upon defeat, Mortamor remains in denial of the heroes' powers up to his last breath. When confronted by Nokturnus, Mortamor drops his narcissistic persona and expresses fear of being challenged by a stronger being but recklessly engages him in combat nevertheless.
In his initial form, he appears as demonic old man with golden orbs. Using the orbs, he can roast the party with Searing Flames (168~188) or lacerate them with Frigid Ice (124~134), both of which ignore Insulatle and can only be reduced by armour resistances or defending. His Laughing attack increases his strike's power by 25%, and damage dealt with the energy orbs adds +67 to each strike.
In this form, Mortamor transforms into a large hulking demon. He relies mainly on hard-hitting physical attacks, sometimes augmenting himself with Oomph and Buff. When he charges a character, his spiked shoulders will deal 150~180 damage ignoring defense. He is still immune to status ailments, but his elemental resistances have fallen. After defeating this phase, Mortamor discards this body and emerges in his iconic form.
At this point, Mortamor appears as a disembodied head and two claws. The claws are independent targets that act on their own, and can revive other parts as needed. In order to restore peace to the world, all parts of Mortamor must be destroyed.

The head is very resistant to elemental damage, with all but frizz and zap dealing 40%. It can fight defensively with Lullab-Eye to send a character to slumber regardless of snooze resistance, or go on the offensive with defence ignoring skills like Pyre o' Fire and Raging Roar (120~150). Once the head drops to half health, it will hit the party with Magic Burst for 200~220 damage, and follow up with a meditation that restores it's MP. The head is also classified as a Zombie-family monster; exploit this weakness with Undead Undoer and Pearly Gates.
Moratamor appears as a Legacy Boss, obtained after completing Quest #158 (or received at special events). He will become enraged once his health drops to orange range. Mortamor is unique among bosses in that he is accompanied by two enemies that are not found anywhere else, unlike Hootingham-Gore and Shogum, who are accompanied by common monsters. He is also unique among Legacy Bosses in that he is the only one who attacks a single time per turn (but the accompanying claws equate to one or two extra actions, depending on whether one or both are present).
DeathMore is present in all of his forms from Dragon Quest VI, though his hands are part of his final form now and not separate monsters. The player will have to obtain nearly all other members of the boss family to breed all of his forms. He is also the boss of Old Man's Gate and is considered by the residents of GreatTree to be the strongest of the evil lords.
Trivia
*Due to Mortamor being able to use Magic Burst, it is likely that he had Gracos seal away Sorceria so he would be the sole individual capable of casting the devastating spell.

*Unlike the other Demon Lords in the Zenithian Trilogy, Mortamor was given no further explanation as to his origins or personality in the DS remakes.

*It is reasonable to assume that Mortamor's yellow orbs are his source of energy, due to the fact that they are used to transform him.

*It appears that Mortamor has some unknown history with Nokturnus.
