Lord Rhapthorne is the central antagonist of Dragon Quest VIII.

A demon of untold power and ambition to dominate the worlds of darkness and light, Rhapthorne is the Party 8's final opponent in their quest to rid their world of an evil curse.

Characteristics
Rhapthorne is among the most proactive demon lords in the series, taking direct action to further his agenda and confronting his foes head-on whenever possible instead of lurking withing an isolated lair. This remains true even when he is rendered a disembodied soul trapped within the Godbird sceptre, manipulating the negative emotions and thoughts of those who touch the staff until they become a blinded puppet able to serve his needs and leading to outright possession in two instances. In a break from the series' tradition of the Archfiend being a distant figure removed from much of the narrative, Rhapthorne is actually present from the very beginning of the game thanks to Dhoulmagus' theft of the sceptre. He is aware of the Party 8's actions against him from the start, and as such his loathing for them is significantly more personal than that of final foes past.

Rhapthorne's original appearance is never seen within the game itself, only alluded to in a mural found within the Dark Ruins where he is depicted as a monsterous robed figure with an unkempt beard. When his body is freed, he takes the form of a diminutive purple demon with large goat horns, a carapace covered torso, an insect's wing casing, and glowing bulb of energy in lieu of legs. After merging with the magical engine that powers his flying castle, the Black Citadel, Rhapthorne has the upper half of an obese exaggeration of his previous form due to becoming over-saturated with magical energy. His horns are greatly enlarged, he sports a thick black beard, his wings have become larger and bat-like, his lower body has solidified into a fleshy bulb with eight spikes arranged in a circular pattern, and his body is adorned with tattoos in a flame-like pattern that are a darker shade of purple than his skin.

Appearances
DQ8
Rhapthorne was born in the World of Darkness, subjugating it with an onslaught of loyal followers and overwhelming magical force. Rhapthorne's ambition drove him to attempt to invade the World of Light as well, bringing him into conflict with the Seven Sages and Empyrea the Godbird. The battle between the two forces nearly rent the world of darkness asunder, but the forces of light proved victorious and the demon was slain. Fearing that Rhapthorne would be revived in the future and menace the world once again long after their deaths, the Seven Sages split his soul from his body and sealed them away to prevent his resurrection. His lifeless body was sealed within a massive rock on a craggy atoll that would one day become the Holy Isle of Neos, where it was chiseled by the sage Alexander into a statue of the Goddess to avoid being tampered with by humans. Empyrea and the sages created a prison for Rhapthorne's soul in the form of the Godbird sceptre, a tall staff that would be entrusted to the royal family of Castle Trodain and remain guarded for centuries.

Rumors of the staff began to circulate the world in the intervening years, developing into a legend that it possesses incredible magical might that could turn the most humble dabbler into a powerful sorcerer. This is what drew the attention of Dhoulmagus, the failed student of Master Rylus of Farebury. Posing as a wandering jester, Dhoulmagus infiltrates the castle and steals the staff. Rhapthorne seizes this importunity and takes full advantage of the overwrought bitterness within the man, testing him by transforming King Trode and Princess Medea into mockeries of themselves when they attempt to stop him as a test before placing a curse on Castle Trodain that turns the inhabitants into plants and wraps the structure in a wall of immense thorns to prevent anyone within with knowledge of the sceptre's menace from following him. Unaware that a certain guardsman remained unaffected by the curse and that the King and Princess of the castle were spared by, Rhapthorne influences Dhoulmagus into murdering the descendants of the Seven Sages to break the seal on the Sceptre and begins with Rylus.

Rhapthorne's killings earned him several powerful foes in the forms of Jessica Albert and Angelo, whose brother and foster father were assassinated by Dhoulmagus respectively. The mage and priest would join the cursed King and his Party 8 as the pursued Dhoulmagus across several continents. The jester's rampage would be put to an end inside the depths of the Dark Ruins in the northwestern island of the world, but Jessica would place her hands on the sceptre after the battle and become Rhapthorne's new vessel. Though still carrying strong negative feelings over the murder of her brother, Jessica is unable to be fully controlled by Rhapthorne and avoids killing a descendant herself. When confronted by the Party 8 in the city of Arcadia Jessica loses her grip on the staff, which is retrieved by a dog named Sir Leopold. Being an animal, Rhapthorne is able to fully possess the hound and continues his rampage until Leopold is killed in battle against the Party 8 in Savella Cathedral.

It is here when Angelo's scheming half-brother Marcello takes hold of the staff and uses it to kill the Lord High Priest of the cathedral after having the Party 8 arrested on accusation of the murder. Marcello is strong willed enough to resist being manipulated by Rhapthorne, but when defeated in battle he becomes too mentally exhausted to continue and becomes fully possessed. With the final descendant killed, Rhapthorne unseals his body on Neos and summons the Black Citadel to the World of Light. The Party 8 invades the citadel with the aid of Empyrea, and defeats Rhapthorne in the heart of the fortress. Refusing to die so soon after his resurrection, Rhapthorne absorbs the magic contained within the citadel and becomes a colossus protected by in impenetrable barrier. He then summons all of his forces from the world of darkness and commands them to besiege all around them, replacing the normal encounters for the remainder of the game.

When the party gathers seven legendary orbs to allow the Seven Sages to weaken Rhapthorne's barrier, they ride upon Empyrea's back and channel their power into replicas of the Godbird sceptre to shatter the shield. The climactic battle in the high skies ends with the heroes victorious and Rhapthorne's soul completely eradicated, with the curse he laid upon Castle Trodain and its people fading shortly after.
Rhapthorne resumes his role as the chief villain of the VIII scenario, and as a boss in several events.

DQR
Rhapthorne's first form was added to the game in the sixth booster pack update, "A Symphony of Small Hope". When the game's name changed to Rivals Ace, he appeared on another card in the third True Set expansion pack by the name of "Demon Lord Rhapthorne". Due to the game's end of service in 2021, Rhapthorne's second form never made an appearance.

DQTact
Both of Rhapthorne's forms appear as S-rank members of the ??? family during the limited Dragon Quest VIII event. His first form can also be battled in the Black Citadel in Journey of the Cursed King and his true form is also faced as a Mega Boss Battle. His first form can be unlocked after defeating him in All-Out Battle! Rhapthorne Edition on Very Hard Mode. His true form appears on his own banner alongside Geyzer.
Trivia
*Rhapthorne's diminutive first form bears a slight resemblance to real world sea angels. Both feature prominent bio-luminescence in their abdomens, stubby appendages, and the Angel's antennae approximate with Rhapthorne's horns.
*When possessing both Dhoulmagus and Leopold, both hosts developed large, black-feathered wings reminiscent of a bird of prey. Neither of Rhapthorne's actually bodies have these traits, with his petite form bearing no wings at all, and his larger form having smaller bat-like wings.
*In Joker 2, the evil scepter Rhapthorne wields is called Malevolence.
In ancient Mesopotamia, Pazuzu is the name of a demon who was the personification of the western wind and held kingdom over wind demons. He was known for bringing famine during dry seasons and locusts during rainy seasons. Although he is considered an evil spirit, Pazuzu could also be called upon to ward off other malicious spirits, as well.

76.69.165.126:

Dragon Quest Monsters (ドラゴンクエストモンスターズ Doragon Kuesuto Monsutāzu) or Dragon Warrior Monsters, as it was first known in North America, is a spin-off series of the Main Series games. Published by Enix Corporation until the merger with Square, newer titles have since been published by Square Enix. Dragon Quest Monsters sets the player in a medieval/fantasy world filled with magic, monsters and knights, yet unlike the original Dragon Quest games, the player's character doesn't do any of the fighting in battles; instead the player has to rely on capturing, breeding and raising monsters to do the fighting for them. The concept originated from monster catching introduced when Dragon Quest V was released in 1992. The character and monster designs are by Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama.

The games were originally aimed at younger game players. They are, however, at times considerably difficult and have since gained an older following.

Games
Dragon Quest Monsters - (1998)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters

The first title in the series was released in Japan on September 25, 1998 (as DQM) and in North America in December 1999. It was released for the Game Boy Color before the console itself was released, however the cartridge was backward-compatible with the older Game Boy in black-and-white.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 - (2001)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters 2

The second DQM2 game for the Game Boy Color featured two different versions of the same game, Cobi's Journey (Luka's Journey in Japan) and Tara's Adventure (Iru's Adventure in Japan). Unlike the first game, this one focuses on attaining keys to unlock new worlds to explore and find monsters.

Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 - (2002)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters 1·2

Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 is a remake of the original Game Boy games for the PlayStation, and was released only in Japan. The game featured updated graphics and a new interface.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart - (2003)
:See main article: Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart

Caravan Heart is the third game in the series, released only in Japan for the Game Boy Advance, although a Fan translation exists. It features Keifer, the prince from Dragon Quest VII.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker - (2006)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker for the Nintendo DS, initially revealed through the publication Shonen Jump was released in Japan on December 28, 2006 and in North America on November 6, 2007. It was the first installment to be in full 3D. The game is set around a tournament referred to as the Joker GP. It also features Wi-Fi multiplayer play through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service and full 3D movement and battles. Unlike the other games in the series, this game has no random battles.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 - (2010)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 is also for the Nintendo DS, and was released in Japan in 2010. This game was released in North America in August 2011. A special edition Professional version was released only in Japan on March 31, 2011.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light - (2015)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 - (2016)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 was released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan, so far exclusively, in March 2016. There are no immediate plans to localize the game. The Professional version of the game is the final entry in the Joker series, gathering every major character from all three games together to compete.

Dragon Quest Monsters 3: The Dark Prince - (2023)
:See main article Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince
The third title in the main Monsters series is set to release for the Nintendo Switch worldwide on December 1st, 2023. The game stars Psaro from Dragon Quest IV.

Game mechanics
Battle system
A battles consist of one to three opposing monsters displayed in the center of the screen, with your own monsters Name, HP, MP and Level displayed at the top of the screen.

Once the battle has begun, the player will be given four battle commands:

*Fight: simply lets your monster attack.
*Plan: opens up another menu with another four commands
**Charge: will attempt to make your monster attack with its most direct and powerful attack.
**Mixed: will attempt to make your monster use support abilities, such as shields, stat enhancements, summons and the like.
**Cautious: will attempt to make your monster use defensive abilities, such as heal, revive and abilities that remove harmful stat effects.
**Command: not able to be used in arena battles, command allows you to give direct orders to your monsters.
*Items: opens up your items list and lets you use that item, either on the opposing monster or your own.
*Flee: attempts to flee from the enemy.

Personalities
A message may appear that says "will attempt" for some of the commands; this is because each monster is given a certain personality depending on the player's actions used in combat. Those actions are Charge, Mixed and Cautious, which when used can raise/lower one of three hidden stats, Bravery, Prudence and Caring.

Basically this means a monster high in one of the three stats will be better at using an attack of that type and more likely to obey, for example a monster with the Personality type Reckless (which is high in Bravery but low in Prudence and Caring) will be more likely to use a Charge attack, whereas a monster with the Personality type Careful (a type high in Caring but low in Bravery and Prudence) will be more likely to use a Cautious attack. Personalities change quickly at lower levels than at higher levels, also monsters with a high wildness are harder to change personalities.

The best personality in the game is Hotblood, which is a monster high in everything, and the worst being Lazy, a type low in everything. Personality's make the game more challenging in the arena battles, where the option to give direct commands to your monsters is not available. A monster can have one of 27 personalities.

Wildness
Another reason monsters might not obey commands is their wildness (WLD in the game). A monster with a high wildness is less likely to obey commands. Newly caught monsters will have high wildness, and also monsters kept in the farm for long periods of time. To lower a monsters wildness, the player just needs to keep them in the party for a while or by feeding them meat items.

Capturing monsters
As with other RPG's once the player defeats the opposing monsters and the battle ends, he or she is awarded a certain amount of experience points (EXP) which are used to level your Monsters. At the end of the battle, there exists a small chance the opposing Monster may join the party. In the newest addition to the series, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, you actively scout for monsters during battle.

This chance is increased (though not guaranteed) by the use of meat items which lower a monster's wildness. The more the player uses, the lower the monster's wildness will be and the more likely it is to join. Certain types of meat lower a monster's wildness more, thus increasing the chance of catching them.

Currency and items
The currency used in the series is gold (G). Basic items that can be found in all the Dragon Quest Monster games can be found in the Dragon Quest Monster series. Examples include herbs and antidotes. Items are usually bought from vendors, found in dungeons, found in chests, or won from arena battles.
