In the {{DQSeries}}, '''Appraisal''' is a function that allows a character to examine and identify the properties of any item or equipment.

While normally the expertise of a [[merchant]] (like {{Torneko}}), in some installments the [[Peep]] spell enables this function to be performed.

Appraisal indicates any hidden effects of equipment, as well as [[party]] members that can equip it, and resale price.

Appraisal can be performed by any merchant in the {{Party 3}}.

Appraisal has been removed due to the game listing the description, attributes, and other values of items and equipment via the menu.

==={{DQ4}}===
[[Torneko Taloon]] can appraise any item during his chapter and later when he joins the {{Party 4}} in {{DQ4 Chapter 5}}. He also has some personal commentary for each individual item (including [[Horse manure|horse manure]]) he examines.

Once the {{Hero 5}} learns [[Peep]] at level 12, he can appraise any item in inventory. No {{MP}} is expended for function.

==={{DQ6}}===
A {{Party 6}} member can start appraising after reaching first rank of the [[merchant]] class.
