Appearances
DQ2
Members
* The Prince of Midenhall: This is the classic warrior of the three heroes. He can use any armour and weapon in the game. He has no magic ability (this is the only game in the series in which this is so), but his physical Attack and Defence are the greatest of the four. This is the character the player starts out with in the castle of Midenhall. His name is directly selected by the player.
**His Level cap is 50, and his icon is blue.
**In the HD-2D Remake, his canonical name is Gawain.
**In the Japanese script for the HD-2D Remake, his name is Loran (ロラン), being based on Princess Gwaelin’s Japanese name Lora (ローラ).
*The Prince of Cannock: The second Prince is closer to the classical magical knight archetype of his ancestors than his cousins, though he is much weaker than his famous forebearers. He cannot use as wide a variety of weapons and armour as the prince of Midenhall but compensates for this with the ability to use magic. However, it should be noted that his attack magic is not as powerful as that wielded by the princess of Moonbrooke, although he is better at healing magic. This character is hard to track down, but is a great ally. His name is generated at random based on the name of the Prince of Midenhall, although there is a cheat code to alter his name. The Cell phone and Switch versions allows his name to be chosen shortly after the prologue.
**His Level cap in most versions of the game is 45 and and 50 as of the Cell phone & Switch port. His icon is green.
**Possible names: Arthur (アーサー), Cain (カイン), Cookie (クッキー), Conan (コナン), Sukesan (すけさん), Tonnura (トンヌラ), Paul (パウロ), Rand (ランド).
***In the English script for Dragon Quest IX his name is Princeton.
***In the Japanese scripts for Dragon Quest IX and the HD-2D remake his name is Cookie.
*** His name in DQStars as well as his default name for the HD-2D Remake is Caradoc.
*** In DQTact his name is Rickerd.
*The Princess of Moonbrooke: Moonbrooke's Princess is dedicated conjurer of the three heroes and the first playable heroine in the series. She can use few types of armour and weapons in the game. She shares some of the Prince of Cannock's magic, but in addition has several powerful damage spells. This character has been cursed and needs to be freed before she will be able to join her cousins. Like the prince of Cannock her name is determined at random, but can be changed by a cheat code. The Cell phone and Switch versions allows her name to be chosen shortly after the prologue. Her HP is low, and she can only equip a few items; but she gains a wide repertoire of spells, and has high MP and Agility.
**Her Level cap in most versions of the game is 35, and 50 as of the Cell phone & Switch port. Her icon is red.
**Possible names: Erin (アイリン), Akina (あきな), Samantha (サマンサ), Nana (ナナ), Purin (プリン), Maiko (まいこ), Maria (マリア), Linda (リンダ)
***In the English script for Dragon Quest IX her name is Princessa.
***In the Japanese scripts for Dragon Quest IX and the HD-2D remake her name is Pudding.
***In Itadaki Street DS and DQStars, she is also named Pudding.
***Her name in DQTact as well as her default name in the HD-2D Remake is Peronel.

DQ2HD
*The Princess of Cannock: The younger sister of the Prince of Cannock has been made playable for the HD-2D remake, bringing the group to a proper four-man party. Her high agility allows her to outspeed the enemies and she has several distinct spells of her own, using Crack and Frizz among others. Despite this, upon initially recruiting her, her lack of combat experience and mischievous personality can sometimes make her ignore the player's wishes and do random effects in battle like a Gadabout. Her selection of weapons and armour is more robust than that of the Princess of Moonbrooke and her stats are decent, except for her low resilience and wisdom.
**Her icon is yellow.
***Her default name in the HD-2D remake is Matilda.
***In the Japanese script the HD-2D remake her name is Macaron, continuing the food theme.
*All four cousins can now reach level 99 and have every stat seen in DQ3HD, in addition to being given fleshed out spell lists and having access to skills.

Trivia
*The cousins were originally referred to as the Luminaries in the 2014 localization of the Android/iOS port of Dragon Quest II. This lead to minor confusion in 2017 with the release of Dragon Quest XI, where that game's Hero 11 was titled the Luminary; the issue was put to rest in 2025 with the introduction of the Scions of Erdrick term.
