The Mogus, also known as the whiskamancer, is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest X. It is an anthropomorphic feline shaman. Its name is a play on the term "mog" and "magus". Its previous name is a portmanteau of the words "whisker" and "necromancer".
Characteristics
Moguses are bipedal cat shamans with dark grey fur that don robes of pure white and wield a shakujō staff in their right paws. Compared to their lesser feline friends, the mogus is a high-ranking sorcerer and has mastered a variety of explosive spells such as Boom and Kaboom to wipe out their opponents and sap the magic power away from spellcasters with Drain Magic. Around their necks, they wear red bells and their staves are made of a dark red metal with silver rings. According to its bestiary description in X, the mogus were once the pet of a nobleman of the demon world that gained independence and became a great wizard.

Trivia
- Mogus's original Japanese name Dark persia (ダークペルシャ, Dākuperusha) references the Persian breed of cat, also known as the Persian longhair. It is a long-haired breed of cat with a round face and a short muzzle that was imported to Italy from Persia around 1620. They are known to be sweet-tempered and relatively quiet cats that love to be around their owners.
- The staves that moguses carry is a shakujō, a type of staff carried by Buddhist monks that was originally used as a noisemaker to scare away animals. They would later be adapted for use as a rhythmic instrument during chants and sutra recitation and also as a weapon. In Sanskrit, it is known as a khakkhara.
