The Magic Key is an item that originated in Dragon Warrior.
Dragon Warrior 1
The Magic Key can be purchased in Tantegel Castle (in an area behind a locked door) and Rimuldar (upon entering the city, immediately go north and follow the river to the shop in the northwest corner). It is needed to open doors. Each key can only be used one time.
The manual's description: "Special keys that open closed doors. Although you can use them on any door, you lose one for each door you have opened"
