- Nergel's name could be a reference to Nergal, the babilonic god of the underworld and lord of the dead, and is also a reference to Hades, whose role in the greek mithology is the same as Nergal.
- Nergel recalls, in some aspects, other villains of Dragon Quest, such as Orgodemir (specifically his first form), but also other characters created by Akira Toriyama, like Magus from Chrono Trigger or Whis from Dragon Ball.
