Professor Toilen Trubble is a recurring character in the series who has a keen interest in researching the nature of magic.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

The professor lives in Zoomingale, conducting intense experiments to revive spells that were thought to have been long-since lost to humanity--namely Zoom for its incredible utility. His research runs around the clock and there is always a hazey smoke pouring out of his chimney, much to his neighbor's irritation. He is missing one vital component in resurrecting the spell, the Lunar Zoombloom flower that blossoms at night, but due to his age and the danger of monster attacks he is unable to retrieve enough samples on his own. Upon meeting the Hero, Toilen strikes a deal to teach him Zoom in exchange for helping his research which leads to a humorous scene of the player flying out of the old man's chimney. The professor is the one in possession of the Zoomshine knick-knack, and will hand it over if the player has already spoken to a man in the town's church.

A decade later in the final act of the game, Toilen's become bed ridden with an illness and has ceased his constant research for the time being, with the townsfolk more worried for his health than relieved that the purple smoke has stopped billowing out of his home. He will teach the Hero the Hocus Pocus spell when spoken to.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

A much younger Toilen is exploring Nadiria in order to find magical reagents not found in the world of humans, and becomes an ally of Psaro, despite the future Master of Monsterkind's hatred of humans.

Etymology[edit]

  • The professor's name is a homophone for toil and trouble, a reference to the famous line of double, double, toil and trouble spoken by the three witches of Shakespeare's Macbeth. This is in reference to his constant research over a bubbling cauldron, of which the three witches recite their line in the play.
