Kacrackle is a recurring ice spell in the Dragon Quest series, typically the most powerful.

Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it originally hit a single group of enemies with fierce ice damage, but starting with V, it lacerates all enemies with enormous crystals.

Localization history

In the Japanese games, Mahyado was replaced as the strongest ice spell in the Joker series of games by Mahyadedosu and eventually introduced in the main series of games starting with Dragon Quest IX. In the English versions of the games, Kacrackle was kept as the name of the strongest ice spell, while Mahyado would be translated as Kacrack in order to maintain its position as the second strongest ice spell in the game.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Kacrackle is learned by Mages and Sages at level 26 in the original version due to a glitch, and at level 32 in all subsequent remakes. Deals between 88~112 points of damage and costs 12 MP to cast, paralleling Kasizzle. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior III, it is called Snowstorm, while in the Game Boy version it is called Blizzard.

The enemies Leger-de-Man, franticore, manticore, WhiteLion, and Zoma can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

Kacrackle damages a group of foes for 88~112 damage, and costs 11 MP to cast. It is learned by Borya at level 32. The 9th Chosen One starts out with this spell upon joining. In the NES version of Dragon Warrior IV, it is called Blizzard; instead, the name Snowstorm was given to Crackle.

The enemies freeze fly, abullddon, and Aamon can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

Due to the removal of Kacrack from the spell list, Kacrackle's range has been increased to target all foes on screen. In exchange, the damage range has been reduced slightly to 80~104. It is learned by the following playable characters and costs 12 MP to cast.

  • In the 3DS port, the spell's base damage was increased to 72~92 and the maximum became 169~189; it takes 570 Wisdom to reach this cap.

Dragon Quest X

Kacrackle can only be learned by Mages investing 130 skill points into the Spellcraft skill tree and by Death Masters investing 180 points into their Reikan skill tree. It costs 24 MP to cast, and damage is calculated as (Magical Might - 400) x 0.71 + 362~402 for a base damage of 310~350 and maximum range of 790~830. With considerable use of spell and skill buffs, the caster's Magical Might can be raised to 1,500 and the calculation changes to the following: (Magical Might - 999) /3 + 790~830 for a true maximum of of 957~997.

When the player chooses to cast Kacrackle, they select a single monster to target. This enemy can be within a range of 15 meters, and any other enemies within a proximity of 7 meters from the target will also be damaged by the spell--greater distance within the 7 meter range does not decrease damage inflicted.
