Localization History
Prior to the localization of Dragon Quest IX, Kafrizzle was the English equivalent of the the メラゾーマ (Merazoma) spell. The Kafrizzle seen in DQIX and later numbered titles refers to the spell メラガイアー (Meragaia), as the Japanese version of the ninth game added several of the fourth-tier spells from Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker into the main series. Because the English root word of frizz could not be further expanded upon as the Japanese mera was, the localization team instead opted to keep the Kafrizzle term for the most powerful fireball spell and assign the English name Kafrizz to Merazoma.
