"If I hadn't met Dai, I'd still be running away. I'd still be some coward! All talk. Useless. Worthless to everyone I know. Our lives were changed by Dai! It's thanks to him that we even made it this far. He's the one who lifts us all up!"

Popp is a main character in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is a Mage, one of the Disciples of Avan, and Dai's closest companion. As one of the main characters of the series, he has gone on to make regular appearances in spinoff games and crossover events.
Appearance and PersonalityEdit
Popp is a young man with light skin of average height and build. His black hair is worn in a messy pompadour-like hairstyle with a yellow bandana tied around his forehead, which he always wears even when changing clothes. Popp's original outfit when he met Dai on Dermline Island consists of a green jumpsuit with a black surcoat worn over it, as well as darker green gloves and boots with white lining. The surcoat is embroidered with the symbol of Avan in the front.
After the battle with Crocodine at the kingdom of Romos, he is rewarded with a set of wayfarer's clothes more befitting of his bravery and deeds. This outfit is still quite similar to his original one but with a darker green jumpsuit, a black and white surcoat with a white insignia over it, a white belt, along with gloves and boots in a lighter shade of green. After becoming Matoriv's student, the young mage is gifted with the Shining staff, a long yellow mage's cloak worn around his neck, and a bizarre belt featuring a design of Matoriv's face on the buckle.
Popp's fourth outfit is a magic vestment given to him by Leona upon arriving to the kingdom of Carl. It is lightweight green cloth armour with yellow and red sections throughout, a long red cape, shoulder pads, gloves, and a gold medallion on his chest with the same insignia seen on his Wayfarer's clothes. The vestment is made of sturdy cloth with excellent heat resistance, allowing Popp to cast Medroa without burning his right hand. However, this outfit is irreparably damaged during the first battle with Dark King Vearn, who burns it easily with his powerful fire magic.
He is arrogant and cowardly, having a tendency to get carried away when the going gets tough, but he is compassionate and cares about his friends. Popp highly regards his master Avan and often thinks about what he would do in dire situations. His courage is tested many times throughout the story, but he never wavers in his loyalty to Dai. Popp is shown to have a keen and strategic mind, being able to come up with ingenious strategies when faced with insurmountable odds.
StoryEdit
Popp was born the son of a blacksmith in the village of Lankarks. He decided to run away from home when he became awestruck by Avan's power and decided to become his apprentice, being disowned by his family in the process. He journeys with his master to Dermline Island when the presence of Hadlar causes the peaceful monsters living there to become berserk.
AbilitiesEdit
Popp is a Mage, specialising in casting different offensive spells such as Frizz and has even mastered more advanced spells such as Kafrizz and Crackle. However, due to his lack of focus and discipline, these spells are sometimes shown failing, such as when Popp used his magic to freeze a wave, but Avan was able to shatter it with ease. His original wand, the Magical Booster, was a gift given to him by his master Avan. Over the course of the story, Popp becomes the student of the Grand Sorcerer Matoriv and becomes more adept with magic.
Pact-based SpellsEdit
- Frizz / Frizzle / Kafrizz:
- Crack / Crackle / Kacrack:
- Sizz / Sizzle:
- Bang / Boom:
- Glimmer: Avan's spell which protects an area from evil influence; a small-scale version was once cast by Popp with the aid of a catalyst.
- Reclimatize: Weather control spell. Learned by Popp in order to assist Dai with his casting of Zapple, it requires a lot of MP to cast.
- Donk: A high-powered gravity spell learned from Matoriv that crushes an area with intense pressure. While powerful enough to kill multiple dragons at once, it consumes a tremendous amount of MP and does not affect all enemies evenly, leaving Popp extremely vulnerable against any who manage to survive.
- Megante: After jamming their fingers into an opponent's temples, the user converts their own life force into an incredibly powerful explosion; this spell is always fatal to the user unless they are a Priest. Popp uses this spell in a failed attempt to defeat Baran, dying as a result, but Baran later restores him to life as a show of respect for his tenacity.
- Midheal / Fullheal: Healing spells learned after awakening as a Sage; Popp can cast these spells with enough potency to shatter a curse which negated the healing spells of another Sage, and subtly enough to continuously heal himself mid-battle without opponents noticing he's cast a spell.
Technique-based SpellsEdit
- Dual Casting: Over time Popp develops the ability to cast spells in both hands at once, mostly using this technique to spam Bang spells or to form a barrier against attacks of another element. By the end of the series Popp has grown skilled enough that he can use this technique to tear apart and dispel Dark King Vearn's Kaiser Phoenix, despite the latter far exceeding him in power.
- Zoom / Levizoom: A type of magic which flings the user at high speed towards a location they picture in their mind; with sufficient skill it can be refined into fully-controlled flight.
- Five Finger Flares: Flazzard's technique which casts five Kafrizz spells simultaneously, replicated by Popp as a desperation move during the battle against Zamza. However, due to low mana reserves his number of spells is limited to three. Matoriv discourages him from using the technique in the future as it could shorten Popp's lifespan.
- Medroa: An extremely powerful spell developed by Matoriv that combines the positive heat energy of a Frizz spell and the negative heat energy of a Crack spell. It requires intense concentration and focus from the Mage.

TriviaEdit
The status screens occasionally included as bonus content for Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai show Popp to have a very high Luck stat, a trait shared with the Gadabout class (famous for starting useless but having easy promotion into the powerful Sage).
