Shrine of the Spirit

The Shrine of the Spirit[1] is south of Cantlin in Dragon Quest III.

It occupied the spot that the Mark of Erdrick is later found in during the original Dragon Quest, and has since been added to the HD remakes of that title and Dragon Quest II so that it appears in every entry of the Erdrick Trilogy.

AppearancesEdit

Dragon Quest I HD-2D RemakeEdit

The shrine is totally submerged in one of the poisonous swamps that have sprung up in Alefgard in the wake of the Dragonlord's rising, and can only be accessed when the Goddess Rubiss is briefly summoned back to the realm and raises it for the Hero. The Dragonlord does not sit idly by in light of this and dispatches his minions to search for the Mark of Erdrick before the Hero arrives, with his strongest undead soldier guarding it. Once the skeleton is dealt with, a small group of faeries will be found seeking shelter in the shrine.

Remake changesEdit

  • The remake changes the interior to have 2 floors, with the first being a new one containing a Faerie who mentions her dislike of humans except for Ortega. She softens her views on the party once Zoma is defeated.
  • As of the SFC version of Dragon Quest III, the Hero is tested by the disembodied voice of an unknown person by one of various Dream Scenarios, after which, the voice might deliver harsh critique of the how the Hero handles the event. The voice belongs to the Dream-Whisperer, who replaces the generic faerie of the 8-bit version.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D RemakeEdit

The prejudiced faerie on the first floor explains that Ortega once saved her from a pack of monsters, becoming the exception that proves the rule on her view against humans. She will also recognize the Hero as Ortega's child, and will warn that his amnesia may prevent him from recognizing his own flesh and blood.

The Dream-Whisperer has more dialogue and is less rude to the Hero than before, and will also restore the party's HP and MP to the max by flying overhead and spreading pixie dust.
