The Wagon (馬車 basha) is a mechanic first introduced in Dragon Quest series that facilitates larger parties.

FunctionEdit

Since only four characters can be in the active "battle" party at one time, once the party grows to more than that the rest can wait in the wagon until switched in. Up to four characters can ride in the wagon. Where the wagon is available, the player can rearrange the party any time. The wagon is not typically available in caves, dungeons, or castles, preventing the player from having anything to fall back on if characters run low on HP and MP and forcing them to make do with what they currently have at their disposal; however, some items such as the Baron's bugle can summon it and some dungeons allow the wagon to be brought in. Additional characters can be stored at Patty's Party Planning Place. Some enemies such as the King slime, can shut the wagon doors, preventing the player from swapping out party members or allowing them to jump out of the wagon.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the ChosenEdit

The wagon is obtained from Hank Hoffman Jr. at the Last Chance Saloon after convincing him to help out, and he joins the party as a guest for a time. When he leaves the party in Mintos to study under, he leaves his horse and wagon in Hero's care.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly BrideEdit

The wagon is purchased from the Curiosity Shop in Fortuna. Said shop is only open at night, and the wagon is offered at the low cost of 300 gold coins. This is required in order to start taming monster companions.

Some elephant monsters (like Eyevory tusk-tusk) can banish a party member to the wagon, requiring the player to switch them back in at the start of the next round. Similarly, one of the effects of confusion on party members is that they may leave for the "peace and quiet" of the wagon.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of RevelationEdit

In Dragon Quest VI, the wagon is obtained in Somnia after the The Hero and Carver capture the horse, Peggy Sue.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed KingEdit

The wagon works a little differently in this installment. Since the party composition is fixed, the wagon is instead used to house the Alchemy Pot. In the 3DS version; due to the expanded party size, the remaining party members not in combat will jump out of the wagon should the active party fall.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan HeartEdit

The wagon is a core game mechanic in this game. Kiefer adds several wagons to his caravan throughout the course of his journey, each of which can hold one guard monster and up to four human allies. Each of these characters has a weight, and each wagon can carry a certain amount of weight. Ten is the starting capacity of each wagon, but they can be upgraded to carry more. In battle, the guard monster and one human ally act each round.
