"Our Hero's adoptive mother, and Chalky's adoring daughter. After her dad died, she raised the little Luminary all on her own, and she crows contentedly over his every achievement. Her skin is something of a mystery among the villagers, being as smooth and soft as silk despite her countless hours in the kitchen. "

Amber (ペルラ, Perla) is a character in Dragon Quest XI. She is the adoptive mother of the Luminary.

Appearance and PersonalityEdit

Amber is a plump woman with blue eyes and keeps most of her brown hair worn underneath a white cap and a red hairband. She wears a saffron-colored dress with an apron over a myrtle smock and brown leather shoes. She is a kind woman and is very supportive of her son, even though she knows that he has a grand destiny ahead of him as the reincarnation of the Luminary.

Amber is a capable cook most famous for her delicious stew, which is the Hero's favorite food. If the Hero chooses to live with Serena, she begins taking cooking lessons from Amber, to apparently mixed results. If the Hero chooses Veronica as his housemate, Amber will mention that the fiery girl reminds her of herself in her younger years.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive AgeEdit

Amber and the villagers seeing the Luminary off as he sets off on his journey.

In the game's backstory, Amber raised the infant Hero after her father Chalky found the boy in bundles while out fishing outside of the village of Cobblestone. She sees off her son and Gemma as they are getting ready to make the traditional coming-of-age climb to Cobblestone Tor on their birthday, and reveals the lad's true nature after he returns from his fateful encounter at the top of the Tor.

After escaping Heliodor's dungeon with Erik, the Hero makes his way back to his hometown. During his vision of the town as it existed in his childhood he tries visiting his home, but the Amber of the past does not recognize him as her son and demands that the apparent stranger vacate the house immediately, to the Hero's confusion and dismay.

After the Hero has spoken to Chalky and returned to the present, he learns that Cobblestone has been ransacked and the villagers are nowhere to be seen, and likely dead. In truth, Amber and the rest of the villagers had been taken hostage by Jasper after Hendrik insisted that they not be harmed, and are kept in captivity until the destruction of Yggdrasil. In the aftermath of that cataclysm, the villagers are set free and join forces with others from across the Heliodor region at their former hometown, now dubbed the Last Bastion. Amber serves as the leader of the settlement's women, providing vital work in support of the remnant of Heliodor's army led by Hendrik.

In the game's third act, Amber and the rest of the Cobblestone villagers are instead set free at Heliodor castle immediately after the confrontation at Yggdrasil and are able to return to the ruined Cobblestone and begin to rebuild it without having to turn it into a fortress first.

TriviaEdit

  • Amber shares her voice actress, in both Japanese and English, with the Hero's mother in Dragon Quest III.
  • Amber's Japanese name Perla may have been borrowed from the English name of her fellow rotund mother Pearl.
  • Amber once burped loudly while company was over, which humiliated the Luminary so thoroughly that he suffers crippling embarrassment over the event to this very day as part of his shypox.
