Unkown Family, usually shown as ??? Family, refers to a group of monsters in Dragon Quest series whose type cannot be determined, most monsters of this family are Boss monsters.
Some monsters are hard to classified because they are demon-forms of human, thus has both characteristics of both Humanoid and Demon family, yet are neither. A example of this is Master of Nu'Un, the demonized Jack of Alltrades.
Another kind of monsters are uniquely designed and has no similar comparison in other families. An example of this is King Godwyn (2nd form) in Gittingham Palace.
There also maybe a cross between two families,meaning that they are but in the ??? family mainly because their type and characteristics can not be put into a certain family.
