Bianca Whitaker (ビアンカ, Bianka) is a character in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. She is a childhood friend of the Hero and one of his possible brides.

She has been a regular participant in the Itadaki Street series, appears as a special guest in Dragon Quest IX, and is one of the thirteen original playable characters in Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below. Bianca also appears as a special Hero character in Dragon Quest Tact alongside Nera and Debora.

Appearance and Personality

As a young girl, Bianca wore her blonde hair in two braided pigtails with purple hairbands and she wears a long myrtle green cape over an orange dress. She has blue eyes. Bianca also wears silver bracelets, a belt with a silver buckle around her waist, dangling pink earrings, and black shoes with myrtle green socks. As an adult, Bianca wears her hair in a single braid with a silver hairband on the right side of her face and a myrtle green dress with an orange cloak attached. She still wears the same earrings and bracelets she did as a child, as well as a black belt with a silver buckle around her waist, a silver choker, and black leather boots worn with myrtle green stockings held up by string. Bianca is known as a great beauty, and many of the men in Stockenbarrel and Mostroferrato comment on her attractiveness.

Like most other characters, her appearance in Heroes has been embellished slightly. Bianca now wears brown, knee-high leather boots held up with myrtle green ribbons at the top and black thigh-high stockings. Her belt is now yellow with black triangular designs all around it. Bianca's dress and cloak are embroidered with silver and gold designs respectively and her choker is now gold with small green gems decorating it.

Bianca is something of a tomboy as a child and she has a strong sense of justice, demonstrated when she deals with the bullies in Roundbeck. She has a love of the outdoors and enjoys going on adventures with The Hero, even when the two grow up. In the ten years that pass between their encounters, Bianca has become strong and independent, having to deal with the loss of her mother and her father's sickness. She is known for her good heart and is beloved by the people of Stockenbarrel. She is humble as well, putting the happiness of The Hero before herself when faced with the difficult prospect of choosing a bride and wishes happiness for him at his wedding if he marries either Nera or Debora.

Appearances

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

The Hero and his father first meet Bianca Whitaker as a child in Whealbrook. She and her mother are in town getting medicine for her father. After the herb-maker is found in a cave, Pankraz escorts them back to their home in Roundbeck.

Pankraz is thinking of returning, but agrees to stay the night and catches a cold, and the party is unable to leave. While wandering around town with The Hero, they meet two kids who are bullying a sabrecat cub. After some discussion, they agree to give up the cat if they can defeat the ghosts at Uptaten Towers. This quest is successful, and she names the sabercat, also giving it a ribbon.

Bianca is not seen again until much later after the first timeskip. While searching for the Circle of Water as part of Mr. Briscoletti's tasks, The Hero stops in Stockenbarrel where he meets up with Bianca again. She unlocks a gate blocking the path to the Cataract Caves where the ring is stored, and accompanies him back to the town of Mostroferrato. Mr. Briscoletti asks him to choose whether he'll marry Bianca or his daughter Nera (or his other daughter Debora, in the Nintendo DS remake). If the player chose Bianca, the two marry and she will continue to travel with you as The Hero's wife.

Upon reaching The Hero's homeland, the kingdom of Gotha, it is revealed that Bianca is pregnant and she will stay in the castle to rest until it is time. After he returns from the Riteof Passage, she gives birth to twins: a boy and a girl. The Hero is coronated as the new King of Gotha. After a night of celebrations, Bianca is abducted by monsters while most of the castle inhabitants were passed out. While attempting to rescue her from Kon the Knight at his tower, it is learned that she has the blood of The Legendary Hero - and for this reason she and her husband are turned to stone by Bishop Ladja.

In the eight years that pass, Bianca's petrified form ended up at the temple of Crocodilopolis. The Hero and the children are able to finally free her, who rejoins the party. Together, they travel to Nadiria to find The Hero's mother, Madeline, and defeat the Grandmaster of the Underworld.

If the player does not marry Bianca, she will return to Stockenbarrel and remain there throughout the game with her father, (whose health will recover regardless of who The Hero marries). She will not marry, but apparently has admirers and will not meet an unhappy fate in any version of the game, contrary to Internet rumors that said her father would die and she would end up as a mistreated, sad bar maid in Mostroferrato.

Stats

Bianca can equip most knives, whips, and staves. Her armor selection includes lightweight tunics, robes, and female-exclusive equipment, but her choice in shields is limited. Unlike the other brides, she can wear the Metal king helm.

Since Bianca is briefly a party member during the first generation, she starts out at level 1 and learns early magic spells, so unlike the other brides, she has a full selection of fire magic. In the Super Famicom version, when she rejoins at Stockenbarrel, she will automatically be leveled to level 10. In the PS2 version, her level will be the level she was as a child plus 2. In the DS and Cell phone versions, her level will be the level she was as a child plus 10.

Spells

Bianca has a similar spell list to Nera, but she has fewer spells overall since she lacks Midheal, Kaboom and Tick-tock. She does possess the lowest level versions of Frizz and Sizz, which Nera lacks... but Nera has their higher level variants which outclass them in every way (aside from spell cost). Ultimately, Bianca is a decent mage but her advantages over Nera lie elsewhere, such as starting at a higher level, having slightly better physical strength, and being able to equip Metal King Helm, which Nera cannot.

In contrast, she is overall a superior mage to Debora, possessing all but one of Debora's spells (Whack), and a few that Debora does not (most notably, the Frizz line of spells).

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Bianca appears as one of the special guests at the Quester's Rest in Stornway. This could be obtained when the DQVC was available using Nintendo's Wi-Fi Channel. When spoken to, Bianca gives the player different pieces of her outfit for fulfilling certain conditions.

  • Bianca's clothes - Received when talking to her.
  • Bianca's bracelets - Received after the inn is fully expanded.
  • Bianca's braid - Received when it is the player's birthday.
  • Bianca's boots - Received when the Hero is a Mage.

The player will receive the Accolade "Best Friend Bride" when having acquired all pieces of her outfit.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

The Luminary can visit the Briscoletti mansion on the eve of the wedding via the Echo Chamber in the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Due to the actions of a monster sealed away by the Briscoletti ancestor Rodolfo, Bianca has been turned into an exact duplicate of Rodrigo on the eve of her wedding day. Thankfully, the groom is still away from the mansion and the monster has been located in Alltrades Abbey.

Bianca is very worried about how her father might handle her sudden transformation, fretting about how poor his health is already and that he doesn't need a major shock such as this. Once the transformation has been undone, she expresses her gratitude to the Luminary. She also mentions that he reminds her of the potential groom, and reminisces about their adventure in Uptaten towers.

Bianca also plays a role in the sabrecat incident at Chateau Felix, loaning her ribbon out to tame Saber once again. She will be happy to have been of help, and glad that her childhood pet has returned.

Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Special

She is one of the three characters from V featured, alongside Nera Briscoletti and The Hero.

Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Victory

Bianca can be summoned to perform a special attack. After leaping from the wagon, she jumps on Saber's back and uses the power of the Circle of Fire to trigger a volcanic eruption to attack the enemy party.

Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Heroes II

Bianca is one of the thirteen playable characters in the first game. She and Nera Briscoletti have been mysteriously transported to the land of Arba in the Dwarven settlement of Grannet on the night before one of them is about to get married. In order to differentiate her from other playable characters, Bianca uses bows as her weapon of choice in the game, and can cast both Frizz and Snooze in battle. Her Coup de Grâce is Ribbon Let Die, where she uses her ribbon to summon her trusty great sabrecat companion, here named Purrcy, who rushes out and strikes any enemies in front of her. Bianca can also be played in co-op dungeons in Heroes II, but cannot be used in the regular story mode.

Dragon Quest Live Spectacle Tour

Bianca appears as a character in the stage production played by actress Maho Tomita.

Dragon Quest Tact

Bianca appears as a S-rank character of the Hero family as part of the limited Dragon Quest V event, appearing on her own banner along with Snowbird. The player can choose to have her join as a companion in the Circle of Water event quest. She can learn Oomph, Whipcrackle, and Rain of Thunder naturally and her Coup de Grâce is Zenithian Strike. Her Leader Perk raises the Zap-type physical potency of allies, including herself, in a 5x5 square around her by 20% and her personal skill Whipcrack Counter delivers a counterattack to any enemy within range if she is struck. She also appears as a boss in the special Zenithian Brides boss battle with Nera and Debora.

Quotes

Knightmare Towers

"'<player>! I knew you'd come. But maybe it would've bin better if you hadn't. The reason them monsters used the Chancellor to snatch me away was so they could lure you into a trap. The ringleader says he's goin' to kill you and then become king in your place! Agh!"
"'Stop! Stop right there, Kon!"
"'Go on, <player>! Now!"

Etymology

Bianca is the Italian form of the name Blanche, which means "white, pure", contrasting her with Nera, whose name means black in Italian.

Trivia

  • In Hand of the Heavenly Bride and Dragon Quest Heroes, Bianca speaks with a Cornish accent.
  • Jessica Albert compliments Bianca's bow arm in Heroes and states that she'd probably be good with a whip, too, referencing the fact that she can equip whips in her original game and the developers were initially considering her whips as a weapon.
