Blight knight

The Blight knight is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IX. It is a powerful skeletal warrior armed with a wicked broadsword.

CharacteristicsEdit

Blight knights are large skeletal swordsmen that wear a set of purple and grey armour, wielding a giant sword in one hand and a round shield in the other. Long ragged capes that drag along the ground are attached to their pauldrons. Their bones have been plundered from the bodies of warriors that fell in battle challenging them. In battle, the skeletal knights specialise in defensive tactics, casting Bounce on themselves to redirect enemy spells and launching counterattacks against would-be melee attackers. They are also capable of landing desperate attacks with their massive swords. In some spinoff games such as Stars and Super Light, the blight knights have traded in their broadswords for a deadly Headsman's axe instead.

EtymologyEdit

The blight knight's Japanese name, Valhalla (ヴァルハラー, Baruharā), is a reference to a majestic hall in Norse mythology located in Asgard where half of the einherjar, warriors who were chosen to battle in the afterlife, reside. It is ruled over by the god Odin.
