The boxer shorts, known as the steteco pants in Japanese, are a common piece of clothing in the Dragon Quest series that were first introduced in Dragon Quest V. They are generally considered a gag piece of equipment notable for their low defensive properties and they can only be worn by male characters.
Appearances
Dragon Quest III
The boxer shorts have a defense bonus of +10 and can be worn by male Warriors, Priests, Thieves, Merchants, and Gadabouts. Some can be found in Khoryv in the item shop behind a door locked by the Thief's Key, Isis, and Tantegel. They can be sold for 90 gold. The boxers only appear in remake versions of the game.
Dragon Quest IV
The boxer shorts have a defense bonus of +8. They can be obtained in Reginhart and the Fungeon (One can be found in the dungeon, with the second being a prize from Foo Yung & Chow Mein). They can only be equipped by Ragnar, Borya, and Torneko. If appraised by Torneko, he mentions that they look like they breathe nicely. Boxer shorts only appear in remake versions of the game.
Dragon Quest V
The boxer shorts have a defence bonus of +15. Some can be found in Lodestar Harbour, Helmunaptra, and Gotha Castle. They are worn by Sancho when he joins and can only be worn by him and some of the monster companions.
Dragon Quest VI
The boxer shorts have a defense bonus of +10 and can be sold for 75 gold. A pair of them is dropped by Bigg & Liddle at the hut north of Wellshire.
Dragon Quest VII
The boxer shorts have a defence bonus of +8 (+5 in the 3DS version), but they decrease style by 100 points. They can only be worn by the Hero, Kiefer, Ruff, and Sir Mervyn. If appraised, it is mentioned that they seem to be a bit stained. One pair can be found in Emberdale in the present near the town's hot springs. If equipped with the pot lid, they provide a style bonus of +30 when being graded for the Best Dressed contest of the Excellence Grading Organisation.
Dragon Quest VIII
The boxer shorts have a defence bonus of +8 and only Yangus can wear them. Oddly enough, they cannot be worn by Morrie in the 3DS version. They cannot be purchased anywhere, but can be sold for 50 gold and are found in various locations throughout the game, the earliest being in the Farebury Region. They can be used to make the leather kilt and Robe of serenity in the Alchemy Pot. They can also be created using the alchemy recipe of bandit's grass skirt + bandana.
