Calasmos is the true evil behind the events of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, and serves as the game's final boss in the third act of the game. An ancient evil known as the Dark One, he once attempted to cover the world in darkness long ago.

Characteristics

Calasmos first appears as black Tockle with a small nebula in the center of it's body, being the form its soul was ensnared in after its temporary defeat by Erdwin several centuries before the game's story. In his true form, Calasmos is a colossal, humanoid insect whose green exoskeleton is pitted with small craters that betray his otherworldly origin. The connective tissue at the joints is blue, and the head is infantile and almost perfectly round. Calasmos has no neck to speak of, with it's head being ensconced by it's armor.

The monster's precise height is unknown and varies slightly between the HD, 3DS, and 2D versions of the game but easily towers over the main cast. The upper torso is bulky and fitted with six small orbs over an oval center gem. The arms are as long as the main body and terminate into different appendages, with the right being a three-pronged claw with an inorganic nozzle and the left ending in a digitless stump possessing six bullet chamber-esque opening from which projectiles are fired. The lower torso is made up of overlapping armor plates that rattle with the creature's movements, and the legs are undersized for the hulking body.

Calasmos' personality is one of almighty contempt for being that dwell in the light, and it seeks to eradicate all life on the planet.

History

Calasmos is a being of alien origin to the planet Erdrea, who did battle with Yggdragon untold years ago. Though victorious in the clash, this act would sow the seeds of its own ruin as Yggdragon became Yggdrasil.

Years later, it was confronted by powerful resistance in the form of Erdwin and his companions, and Calasmos was defeated in the Gallopolis desert. It was at this time that the monster revealed the depths of its cunning, stalling its demise by whispering promises of power and glory to Morcant and corrupting the wizard to stab Erdwin in the back before the final blow could be delivered. Though Morcant, now Mordegon, would prove to be a thorn in Calasmos' side in the future, the manipulation proved successful and the allowed it to escape the sealing of its body in Erdwin's Lantern.

During the short-lived reign of Mordegon in the second act of the game, Calasmos journeys to the now-descending Lantern to merge with its original body, but it is destroyed by Mordegon before it can complete the required incantation to start the process. Calasmos' Tockle form collapses to it's knees and remains motionless after these events, with only a long line of ellipses being displayed when it is spoken to.

Though confronted with a tremendous setback, Calasmos trails the Luminary when he is spirited away to the past to undo the disaster caused by Mordegon, and reluctantly keeps the young man safe until the sorcerer is slain. Following this, Calasmos makes way to the Lantern once more and fully resumes it's original power, declaring that all life will be destroyed.

Strategy

One popular favorite strategy for defeating Calasmos is bringing the Luminary, Erik, Veronica, and someone who can poison, like Sylvando, to exploit Erik's Victimiser skill to deal 600% damage. Apply Oomphle when possible and have Erik use his Divide skill for a total of 1,800% damage.

Alternatively, Veronica and Serena and use their mighty magic burst pep power to deal up to 5994 damage in one turn. This will leave both girls spent until MP restoring items are used.
