The Candy cat is a monster introduced in Dragon Quest VIII. It is a fat, striped cat encountered early in the game.

Characteristics

Candy cats are very large cats with white fur and orange stripes. Their name is derived from their striped fur, which gives it the appearance of a candy cane. They have goofy faces, a long tongue which is often seen trailing behind their permanently open mouths, and a tuft of orange fur on top of their heads. They are quite harmless on their own, sometimes wasting their turn in battle in order to lick their face or roll around.

Dragon Quest V

While jailcats debuted in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, they also appear in the Nintendo DS and mobile remakes of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, replacing the Great sabrecub. It's possible to recruit one shortly after obtaining the wagon in Fortuna; the jailcat is somewhat unique being the only monster able to cast Crack (which normally isn't available until much later), and can last until the third generation.

Trivia

The Great Sabrecub (which the Jailcat replaced) was probably removed because it may have been confusing to some players why the Hero is trying to help a Great sabrecub while other sabrecubs are attacking him outside of town.
