Etymology

The chain sickle (鎖鎌, lit. chain-sickle) is a traditional Japanese weapon used in medieval times. It consists of a kama (sickle) attached to a long chain with a heavy weight at the end. Due to the sickle's usage as a farming tool, it could be carried by ninjas without arousing suspicion. The kusarigama's wielder could swing the chain around their head, then throw it to entangle an enemy's sword, spear, or other weapon, and then slice with the sickle. The weight at the end of the chain could also be used to hit an opponent from a range before moving in closer. Kusarigamas have been commonly featured in Japanese anime, manga, and video games as a weapon.
