Coburg is a major kingdom found in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

It is located north of a small lake, and is bordered by mountains on the north and east, and grassy plains to the southwest. It consists of a castle and a small town.

The castle also contains a Teleportal leading to the Arboreas Teleportal which is near Abovitall Tower. The Teleportal from this end is guarded by an old man at night to prevent entry to Coburg Castle.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly BrideEdit

Coburg is one of the central kingdoms in the game, and the player first enters it after the Hero and Pankraz cross through the Coburg checkpoint in the final act of the game's first generation. Pankraz has been summoned by the King to discuss important matters, and the Hero is left to explore the castle grounds. The King requests that Pankraz watch over his son, Harry, who is a terrible brat that causes endless strife for the castle staff. The King also suggests that the Hero try and make friends with him, hoping he'd be a good influence on the boy.

The two get off to a rocky start before things get even worse, with Harry being kidnapped by thugs and hauled off before the Hero and Pankraz can stop them. Making a break for the Ancient Ruins north of Coburg, the party attempts to rescue Harry but are confronted by members of the Order of Zugzwang. Pankraz is murdered by the order and the children are hauled off into slavery, with the Hero's pet sabrecub being left to fend for himself in the wild.

A decade passes, and when the duo escape their imprisonment at Crocodilopolis alongside a girl named Maria, they return to Coburg and uncover the truth of Harry's kidnapping. The Queen of Coburg married into nobility after Harry was already born to the late Queen, and this put her own son--Wilbur, second in line for the throne unless something were to happen to the boy. She arranged for his kidnapping and unwittingly struck a deal with the Order of Zugzwang, and watched as Wilbur took the throne with the King's passing one year after the kidnapping. The Queen, now the Dowager, was eventually impersonated by a monster and imprisoned in the castle dungeon for several years. This imposter ruled Coburg from behind the throne, turning the peaceful kingdom into a militarized dictatorship that levied immense taxes on the people and raze Whealbrook to the ground.

When the faux dowager is exposed and killed, peace returns to Coburg. Wilbur takes responsibility for the kingdom directly for the first time, and Harry advises him along the way. Though Harry has to part ways with the Hero at this point, he leaves behind his farewell in a familiar place and wishes him the best. Later on, Harry and Maria marry and attend the Hero's own wedding. In the third generation, the two have a son of their own whom Wilbur names as the heir to Coburg.

Knick-knackEdit

A very personal kick-knack is the Marital organ, a memento of the wedding between Harry and Maria that the Hero unfortunately missed. It is a small music box with mechanical figurines of of the newlyweds set on top, with Harry in a sharp white and Maria in a beautiful lavender.

Remake changesEdit

  • Prince Wilbur's sprite in Generation III was changed originally in the Super Famicom version to resemble other kings in the game. The remakes maintain his Generation II sprite in the timeskip.
  • In addition to presenting The Hero with the Marital organ, Harry beforehand has him checking out the empty chest in his former bedroom which is shown to have a note where the Prince mentions how Pankraz's sacrifice is what kept him going during the years of slavery. As well as mentioning how he hopes that keeping Coburg safe will help his childhood friend.

EtymologyEdit

Coburg is derived from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a duchy of central Germany. This territory would also lend its name to the homeland of the Hero, further underlining the connection between the two kingdoms in the Hero's life.
