Dazzle, originally localized as Surround is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series. It attempts to distract a group of enemies with illusions, reducing their accuracy to 3/8ths (37%). Introduced in Dragon Quest II, it has been a low level spell that Magi learn early in their careers. The spell typically has a 100% success rate, barring enemy resistance.

Appearances

Dragon Quest II

The Princess of Moonbrooke learns Dazzle at level 6 in all versions of DQII and can cast the spell for a mere 2 MP.

In the original NES version of II, Dazzle will only reduce accuracy by 25%. This flaw has been remedied in all subsequent versions.

Dragon Quest III

Interestingly, Priests learn Dazzle in the third quest instead of the Magi. They pick up this spell at level 7 and it costs them 4 MP

Dragon Quest IV

Dazzle causes a group of enemies to hallucinate (i.e see many copies of the target), thus making them harder to hit. Kiryl learns it at Level 6, and Orifiela joins the party already knowing the spell.

The Gerion can use Surround at the second tier after 16 battles. The Mage learns it at the sixth tier after 105 battles. Maribel learns it at level 11. It costs 3 MP to cast.
