The Delusionist is an intermediate monster vocation in Dragon Quest VII.

Description

The Delusionist is a bizarre, rotund monster that floats about and is the monster world's version of a stage magician. This vocation offers slight increases in most attributes, but a drop to the character's Strength and Style. Mastering the vocation grants a weak resistance to Sizz, Frizz, Zap, Woosh, Crack, stone/strike skills, and a strong resistance to ice breath and all status ailments aside from Sap and Drain Magic. Mastering the vocation is also necessary in order to become a Black bishop.

Requirements

To become a Delusionist, a character needs to master both the Well Wisher and Lips vocations or have a monster heart in their inventory when going to Alltrades Abbey to change their vocation. The player can also win a Delusionist heart from the Lucky Panel at the Casino at either Buccanham in the present or the Grand Slum version of the Immigrant Town/final version of the Haven. However, the delusionist heart has one of the lowest chances of appearing as one of the prizes.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, there are more options for obtaining the monster heart. Players are able to create a custom Traveller's Tablet with a Delusionist as the boss. A Delusionist heart can also be received as a reward for the first-time completion of the Gruesome Garrison DLC Tablet.

Trivia

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, most of the vocation's accolade names are related in some way to illusions or delusions of grandeur:
    • A fantasist is a person that lives in a fantasy world or one who creates fantasies.
    • Windmill-Tilter is a reference to the English idiom "tilting at windmills", which means to waste time and energy at imaginary enemies. It originates from the 17th century Spanish novel Don Quixote by writer Miguel de Cervantes.
    • A Castlebuilder is a figurative noun to describe someone who has overly visionary aspirations, someone who builds castles in the air.
    • Ignis fatuus, which is Latin for "foolish flame", is a type of atmospheric ghost light seen by travelers over bogs of swamps, believed to be caused by the spontaneous combustion of gases emitted by rotting organic matter. It can also mean an illusion, something that misleads.
    • An idiot savant is a person who exhibits extraordinary talent in one particular subject, but is significantly impaired in other areas or social functioning.
