Chapter 1 exists mainly to setup the story of the game by introducing several key characters in the game.  This includes the [[Hero (Dragon Quest Sword)]], [[Claymore]], and [[Swordmaster Dao]].  The plot of this chapter involves the hero traveling to Caliburn Cave in order to undergo what is known as ''The Warrior's Walk''.  This entails visiting Caliburn Cave in order to prove ones strength against [[Sir Dirk Worthington]].  The hero must do this in order to be recognized as a protector of Avalonia.

Dragon Quest Swords Chapter 1 subtitled The Walk contains the first level and associated plot of Dragon Quest Swords. It consists of the early game introduction at Castle Avalonia and the Northern Plains and Caliburn Cave areas of Avalonia.
