Empyrea is a large mauve eagle with a mantle of light blue feathers around her neck, trailing tail-feathers, and two long quills extending from the back of her head. With her regal appearance and syntax, Empyrea has the air of a queen. She has a strong sense of justice, causing her to join in the battle against Rhapthorne and his horde and keep watch over the village of Dark Empycchu. Empyrea is a very considerate being, urging the protagonists to harbor no guilt when she believed that ruin had befallen her child, as well as making sure to cause no harm to the villagers of dark Empycchu when she is forced to do the bidding of evil. In the distant past, Empyrea assisted the Seven Sages in creating the Godbird Sceptre and sealing away the demon Rhapthorne within it during their battle in the World of Darkness. While the sages returned to the World of Light with the sceptre, Empyrea was exhausted from the battle and rested in what would later be known as the dark world's Empycchu. She would remain there after recovering, watching over the islanders with whom she shared her new roost. Her shadow would be cast on the ground in the World of Light whenever she flew.

Many years later, Empyrea had laid an egg on her eyrie near dark Empycchu. The egg, however, was held hostage by Rhapthorne's agent Gemon. With her unborn child held ransom, she was forced to assault dark Empycchu at Gemon's command, terrorizing the villagers and damaging several buildings. Even under these dire circumstances, Empyrea was careful to not harm any of the villagers directly and avoided children entirely during her raids, only lightly ripping their communal hut. The village chief and the blacksmith observed that Empyrea looked hesitant and remorseful during the assault, leading them to question what was actually happening while the other adults were left fearful.

The player is confronted by Empyrea in battle after approaching her roost near the village at the chief's request, and after being defeated she explains that she wanted to test the strength of the protagonists before asking forgiveness and explaining the circumstances. Beseeching the party for aid against Gemon for the sake of her child and the village, she carries the group to the base of the eyrie to avoid Gemon's notice once they agree to help.

Although Gemon was defeated by the party, he managed to destroy the egg before dying.  The soul of Empyrea's son endures, however, and became the Godbird's soulstone, which enabled the party to take to the skies. After Rhapthorne's resurrection and weakening of the boundary between worlds, Empyrea saves the party from falling thousands of feet to the ground as the Black Citadel collapses. She arrives in light Empycchu and sends the party to collect the orbs containing the spirits of the Seven Sages and gave to them the Godbird Sceptre.  She also joined the party for the final battle, allowing them to travel on her wings.

Following Rhapthorne's final destruction, Empyrea carried the party back to Trodain Castle, where she revealed that her true name was, in fact, Ramia. She demonstrates her power to travel to other worlds, fading into the distance along with her son as she regales that she kept the name the six sages bestowed upon her out of her respect for them.
