Also known as Ramia from Dragon Quest III, Empyrea is referred to as the Godbird. She has the power to travel between worlds. The seven sages crafted the Godbird Scepter under her instruction. When Rhapthorne attempted to open the gate between the World of Light and the World of Darkness, Empyrea used all her power to seal the gate, losing her ability. Her shadow in the World of Light creates a portal to the World of Darkness called the "Dark Eye".

Empyrea is a central character in Dragon Quest VIII, fighting alongside the seven sages to seal away Rhapthorne several centuries before the game's story begins.

Empyrea's first encounter with the party was when they traveled to the World of Darkness in search for her advice. There they discovered that her egg was stolen by a monster called Gemon, and thus she has been forced to attack the nearby village of Empycchu.
In the English version of VIII, her voice is provided by Jessica Martin.

The party agreed to infiltrate the Godbird's Eyrie where the egg was being kept hostage, but during the battle to recover it, Gemon sacrificed himself to destroy the egg. Empyrea's child, who died before birth, appeared as a spirit before the party and decided to aid in their quest, bestowing them the power to fly through the skies, allowing them to reach places of their world inaccessible by land or sea.
Appearance and Personality
Empyrea is a large mauve eagle with a mantle of light blue feathers around her neck, trailing tail-feathers, and two long quills extending from the back of her head. Her eyes are a deep green with black pupils. She is strong enough to carry all four members (six in the remake) of the Party 8 on her back, along with the wagon and Princess Medea in tow with ease.

Empyrea plays a major role in the game's final battle. Not only does she recover the Godbird's sceptre, allowing the party to invoke the power of the seven sages' spirits to break the barrier protecting Rhapthorne, but she also carries them on her back throughout the entire fight.
With her regal appearance and syntax, Empyrea has the air of a queen. She has a strong sense of justice, causing her to join in the battle against Rhapthorne and his horde and keep watch over the village of Dark Empycchu. Empyrea is a very considerate being, urging the protagonists to harbor no guilt when she believed that ruin had befallen her child, as well as making sure to cause no harm to the villagers of dark Empycchu when she is forced to do the bidding of evil. Empyrea is also humble, uncomfortable with the title of "Godbird" that the villagers bestowed her.

Many years later, Empyrea had laid an egg on her eyrie near dark Empycchu. The egg, however, was held hostage by Rhapthorne's agent Gemon. With her unborn child held ransom, she was forced to assault dark Empycchu at Gemon's command, terrorizing the villagers and damaging several buildings. Even under these dire circumstances, Empyrea was careful to not harm any of the villagers directly and avoided children entirely during her raids, only lightly ripping their communal hut. The village chief and the blacksmith observed that Empyrea looked hesitant and remorseful during the assault, leading them to question what was actually happening while the other adults were left fearful.

The player is confronted by Empyrea in battle after approaching her roost near the village at the chief's request, and after being defeated she explains that she wanted to test the strength of the protagonists before asking forgiveness and explaining the circumstances. Beseeching the Party 8 for aid against Gemon for the sake of her child and the village, she carries the group to the base of the eyrie to avoid Gemon's notice once they agree to help.

After Rhapthorne's resurrection and weakening of the boundary between worlds, Empyrea saves the Party 8 from falling thousands of feet to the ground as the Black Citadel collapses. She arrives in light Empycchu and sends the Party 8 to collect the orbs containing the spirits of the Seven Sages and gave to them the Godbird Sceptre.  She also joined the Party 8 for the final battle, allowing them to travel on her wings.

Following Rhapthorne's final destruction, Empyrea carried the Party 8 back to Trodain Castle, where she revealed that her true name was, in fact, Ramia. She demonstrates her power to travel to other worlds, fading into the distance along with her son as she regales that she kept the name the six sages bestowed upon her out of her respect for them.
