Etymology[edit]

In the original Japanese, the flintstone is known as a tsukemono ishi (つけもの石) or pickling stone, which is a heavy rock used to apply pressure in a pickle press, known as a tsukemonoki (漬物器). It is used to preserve vegetables, known as tsukemono (漬物, lit. "pickled things") and has been traditionally done in Japan before refrigeration.
