Great keepers (Originally localized at GateGuard in the GBC port of Dragon Quest III) are generally bonus monsters that have appeared in several Dragon Quest remakes

The Super Famicom port of the game marked the debut of this monster with them being encountered in Zenith tower.
Dragon Quest VIII
As with the III, the Great keeper wasn't present in the original release. They are encounter in the new bonus dungeon, the Altar of Wroth.
