The Halberdsaurus is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest X. It is a more powerful, black-scaled variant of the Hacksaurus.

Characteristics

Halberdsauruses are polearm-wielding crosses between tyrannosaurid dinosaurs and a European dragons. They have black scales, orange undersides, small wings on their back with orange membrane, and the frills on their head change colors from orange to teal. Their black and orange coloration is similar to that of the Dragstar, while the sharp halberds they wield are made out of black and orange metal as well. In battle, they make use of various martial techniques and can breathe powerful fiery breath, making them a force to be reckoned with even compared to their other axe-wielding cousins.

Appearances

Dragon Quest X

Halberdsaurus appears as the boss of the false Grand Zedora Gaiden quest: "The Man Who Became Hope". In battle, it can use Falcon Slash, Hatchet Man, and Scorch.

Dragon Quest Tact

Halberdsaurus appears as an S-rank monster of the Dragon family. It can be scouted by redeeming 2,000 Arena Medals in the Swap Shop.

Etymology

Its Japanese name Tomahōgā is based on tomahawk, a type of single-handed axe used by various indigenous peoples of North America, while its English name is based on halberd, a two-handed pole weapon that consists of an axe blade topped with a spike mounted on a long handle that saw heavy use in medieval Europe.
