The Illuminated sea chart is a key item in Dragon Quest VIII.
It is a nautical map that allows any seafarer to reach the fabled Godbird Isle, also known as the Isolated Plateau.

After being thwarted by the evil Sir Leopold at Marta's Cottage, the party begins to lose hope as the possessed beast has the ability to fly and is always one step ahead of them. Marek then suggests enlisting the help of the Godbird Empyrea, realizing that the only way for the party to catch up to the dog is if they can fly, as well. The stone tablets left by Kadan of the Seven Sages detail how they were able to seal away the Dark Lord Rhapthorne with the help of Empyrea, whose nest is located on an island in the southwest.[1]Unfortunately, the isle is unreachable by normal means, requiring the party to seek out the sea chart.[2]
The sea chart can be found in a treasure chest in the deepest part of the Pirate's Cove, guarded by the ghostly Captain Crow himself. Although previously inaccessible, the party is able to enter the locked door with the Ultimate key received from Marta. The party manages to acquire the map after venturing through the cave and defeating the pirate captain, who wished to see if they were worthy enough. If the map is used while out at sea, it will show a path from a X-shaped reef located just off the southwest coast of the Holy Isle of Neos.
When the ship approaches the reef, it begins to glow brightly and reveal a path that leads to the Isolated Plateau. Following the path on the ship will allow the party to enter the plateau. If the player deviates too much from the path of light, it will disappear and they will be forced to start over. Although it seems as though they will crash into the cliffs at the end of the path, the party suddenly find themselves transported to a shore on the island.[3]Upon arriving on Godbird Isle, the shadow of Empyrea can be seen flying overhead.
