When Dragon Quest IX was released in English, the spell Meragaia was localized as Kafrizzle, despite the fact that Merazoma had been localized as Kafrizzle in Dragon Quest VIII and Zenithian remakes. It should be noted though that Meragaiā's in-game animation looks similar to Kafrizzle's animation in Dragon Quest VIII, which is likely why it was given that name.
In Dragon Quest IX, Kafrizzle (メラガイアー Meragaiā) is a new spell; however, despite the fact that Merazoma had been localized as Kafrizzle in Dragon Quest VIII and the DS remakes, to keep with the new spell naming structure Merazoma became Kafrizz. Kafrizzle therefore remains the most powerful of the Frizz family of spells.

Localization Differences

In Dragon Quest IX, Kafrizzle (メラガイアー Meragaiā) is a new spell; however, despite the fact that Merazoma had been localized as Kafrizzle in Dragon Quest VIII and the DS remakes, to keep with the new spell naming structure Merazoma became Kafrizz.
