Khoryv is a village in the overworld of Dragon Quest III.

It is located in the mountains north of Romaria and south of Norvik.

AppearancesEdit

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of SalvationEdit

The town is an optional location as it does not possess any key items for completing the game. It serves as a rest area for completing two nearby side quests: the Skyfell Tower and the Dreamstone quest. The town is home to the grave of a famous martial artist who is said to have killed a bear unarmed, but his ghost can be spoken to at night. He reveals that he actually used a set of Iron claws, and recommends them for any Martial Artist. A bounty hunter from Romaria is in the village as well, attempting to find clues as to the whereabouts of Robbin' 'Ood. The town is home to the second bar in the game, where one patron gossips about the spell of eternal slumber being set upon the village of Norvik for angering the Faeries and another brushing it off as ludicrous--this is the player's first hint of the nature of the Dreamstone sidequest.

Khoryv is also the first opportunity in the game to acquire the Poison needle, which can be found in a treasure chest in the item shop at night. This is the only opportunity to acquire one until much later in the game when they can be purchased in Persistence. They are also rarely dropped by enemies in various locations.

NES glitchesEdit

Khoryv is the subject of two useful glitches in the NES version of the game.

Enemy boundary glitchEdit

Khoryv is near an area of the world map which has errors in its enemy boundaries. By traveling east from the town along the river, monsters from the southern region across the river can be encountered. These enemies are extremely powerful compared to those near Khoryv and can give a huge Experience boost if defeated early in the game. The glitch appears to have been purposely retained in the GBC port. The glitch is remarkably similar to the also unintentional "Peninsula of Power Leveling" glitch that existed in different forms in the first two Final Fantasy games, where errors in encounter zone placement could allow players a chance to fight enemies way above the power level of the rest of the general area from a later place in the game proper.

Scornet paralysis exploitEdit

One of the enemy types found near Khoryv is the Scornet. These enemies can cause a player to become paralyzed when being attacked, the first appearance of this status condition in the game and series. This condition is necessary to perform the numb status glitch. Fighting Scornets is the earliest point in the game where the glitch can be performed.

EtymologyEdit

  • Kazābu is derived from Kazakhstan.
  • "Khoryv" may be derived from Kyiv.

TriviaEdit

  • Considering the town's correlation to Eastern Europe, the presence of the Vladdy and Putrefido enemies may be a reference to depictions of Transylvania being a land of the undead in film and fiction.
