Knife Weapon Family

Knives are recurring type of weapon in the Dragon Quest series. Though not as powerful as larger blades, knives are reliable weapons that are most often used by character unable to make use of heavier arms, such as Thieves and Mages.

Frequently, Knives possess special attributes to compensate for their low power, afflicting opponents with paralysis or instant death depending on the weapon equipped. Further more, one knife in particular has gained notoriety for its effectiveness in combating Metal Slimes--the Poison Needle. Because the dirk is set to always deal 1 point of damage upon a successful hit, patient players can whittle down a Metal Slime's HP in a scant few turns. Beginning with Dragon Quest IX, all knives will deal 10% more damage to members of the Bug family.

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary LineEdit

The Divine Dagger is the first appearance of a short blade in the series, and is the only non-staff weapon the Princess of Moonbrooke can use.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of SalvationEdit

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the ChosenEdit

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly BrideEdit

Knives can be used by Bianca, Nera, and the Hero's daughter, as well as by an assortment of monster allies.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of RevelationEdit

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten PastEdit

Knives can be equipped by Maribel, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe. There are also a few that are restricted to Ruff.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed KingEdit

Jessica can use knives in the PS2 version, and Red can as well in the 3DS port. Once her knife skill reaches 30, she can also start wielding swords as well.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry SkiesEdit

Knives can be used by the Warrior, Thief, and Mage vocations. However, once a character fully masters the Knife skill set, they can freely use the daggers with any vocation.

Dragon Quest XEdit

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive AgeEdit

Erik and Sylvando can equip knives. Knives are one-handed, so the user can dual-wield them once they unlock the appropriate skill. Knives deal 10% extra damage to monsters in the Nature family, owing to the bug family being grouped with aquatics and plants for the title.

Dragon Quest BuildersEdit

The Builder is able to throw divine daggers to attack enemies at range.
