This article is about the elemental skill. For the spell called "Lightning" in earlier localizations, see Kazap.

Lightning is an ability in the Dragon Quest series. Unless otherwise stated, it pulls down bolts from the sky for 50~70 damage and 0MP, and is typically learned by bruiser types rather than casters.

Appearances

Dragon Quest IV

Lightning is used by the Demon thunderer in the remakes of IV, dealing 35~45 blast damage to all allies.

Dragon Quest V

Lightning is learned by several monster companions such as the old man of the sea and bomboulder. In the Super Famicom version, the skill dealt Zap damage, but in all other versions is uses the bang element.

Dragon Quest VI

Lightning is learned by advancing to rank 3 of the Luminary vocation. Despite all appearances, the skill belongs to the Bang family of spells much like the Lightning Slash.

Dragon Quest VII

Lightning was nerfed in the 3DS version, with a new range of 30~50. It is learned by mastering the Sailor or Serial quiller vocations.

Dragon Quest VIII

An enemy only skill, Lightning deals 28~36 damage.

Dragon Quest IX

Lightning grew weaker in IX, dealing only 17~26 damage. Stronger variants debuted, however, as detailed below.

Terrible Lightning

Dragon Quest IX

Dealing 28~43 damage, Terrible Lightning is utilized by Greygnarl, Cumulus vex, and Corvus.

Dragon Quest X

Apocalyptic Lightning

Dragon Quest IX

Two types of A.P. are used in IX; one for the Wonder wyrtles and Greygnarl that deals 162~197 damage, and another for Murdaw which bases its damage range on his level.

For the latter, the calculation is (70 + level^2 / 22) * 0.9~1.1 for a minimum of 162~198 and a cap of 454~555.
