This is a list of characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that aren't part of the Dragon Quest series.

Super Mario characters

  • Mario - Main character of the series and franchise. Mario made his debut as the character Jumpman in the first installment on the Donkey Kong franchise which was also called Donkey Kong and has been part of the SSB series since the first game. Among his arsenal in since Brawl is F.L.U.D.D. (short for Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device) who made its debut in Super Mario Sunshine.
  • Luigi - Younger brother of Mario and occasional star of his own game. Luigi made his debut in the game Mario Bros. and has been a part of the SSB series since the first game, with the 3DS/Wii U installment of SSB being the only time he's playable from the start. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Luigi being the 33rd character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Mario and those in his unlock tree up to Ike. After either condition is met, he must be defeated in Luigi's Mansion.
    • Recruiting him at the Mysterious Dimension in the World of Light.
  • Peach - Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach, originally called Toadstool in the US until Super Mario 64, made her debut in Super Mario Bros. and part of the SSB since Super Smash Bros. Melee. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Peach being the 12th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Fox and those in his unlock tree up to Zero Suit Samus. After either condition is met, she must be defeated in Princess Peach's Castle.
    • Recruiting her at the Molten Fortress in the World of Light.
  • Daisy - Princess of Sarasaland and ally to the Mario Bros. She made her first appearance in Super Mario Land and later became a recurring character since Mario Tennis 64. The character can be unlocked by:

    • Recruiting her at Dracula's Castle (first building balcony) in the World of Light.
  • Bowser - Enemy of the Mario Bros. and the Mushroom Kingdom, though sometimes ally. Bowser made his debut in Super Mario Bros. and part of the SSB since Super Smash Bros. Melee. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Bowser being the 3rd character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Donkey Kong. After either condition is met, he must be defeated in Mushroom Kingdom U.
    • Defeat Giga Bowser in the World of Light.
  • Rosalina and Luma - Team character consisting of Rosalina, the princess of the cosmos, and Luma, a sentient star-like creature. The duo made their debut in Super Mario Galaxy and were first playable in the 3DS/Wii U installment of SSB. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with the duo being the 45th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Donkey Kong and those in his unlock tree up to Pokémon Trainer. After either condition is met, they must be defeated in Mario Galaxy.
    • Recruiting them at the North Dark Realm in the World of Light.
  • Bowser Jr. - Son of Bowser, Bowser Jr. made his debut in Super Mario Sunshine. Instead of having an alternate coloring, the character has different forms consisting of the seven Koopalings, all of whom made their debut in Super Mario Bros. 3. Collectively, they made their SSB debut in the 3DS/Wii U installments. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Bowser Jr. being the 61st character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Fox and those in his unlock tree up to Daisy. After either condition is met, he must be defeated in Delfino Plaza.
    • Recruiting him at the left Path of Wisdom of the Gerudo Desert in the World of Light.
  • Dr. Mario - An alter-ego of Mario who debuted in the puzzle game Dr. Mario. This form previously appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee and returned for the 3DS/Wii U installment of SSB, and is treated as a separate character in both the later games, as well as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Dr. Mario being the 62nd character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Mario and those in his unlock tree up to Roy. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on New Donk City Hall.
    • Recruiting him at the Edge of Ribbon Road and Lumiose City in the World of Light.
  • Piranha Plant - One of the most recurring enemies in the Super Mario franchise, debuting in Super Mario Bros. It was the first DLC character for Ultimate, being able to be downloaded for free if players earned My Nintendo points through Ultimate prior to Piranha Plant's release; upon release, it was made available for purchase for $4.99 USD.

Donkey Kong characters

  • Donkey Kong - The grandson of the Donkey Kong Mario faced in Donkey Kong, debuting as the "new" Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong Country (with the old one becoming Cranky Kong). Donkey Kong has been a part of the SSB series since the first game.
  • Diddy Kong - Partner to Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong debuted alongside him in Donkey Kong Country, and later took on the role of main character in the game's sequel, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Diddy Kong debuted in the SSB series in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Diddy Kong being the 37th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Donkey Kong and those in his unlock tree up to Greninja. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Kongo Falls.
    • Recruiting him at DK Island in the World of Light.
  • King K. Rool - The longtime rival to the Kong family made his debut alongside Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong in Donkey Kong Country, and appeared in multiple games as the main antagonist after, up until the Donkey Kong Country Returns series. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with King K. Rool being the 16th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Link. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Jungle Japes.
    • Recruiting him in the Mysterious Dimension in the World of Light.

The Legend of Zelda characters

  • Link - The legendary hero of Hyrule, who has appeared in multiple incarnations over the course of time, wielding the Triforce of Courage and called upon by the three Golden Goddesses to wield the Master Sword and defeat the evil Ganon before the three pieces of the Triforce can be collected. Link has appeared in every SSB game since the original game, but holds the unique distinction of doing so in name only, as the first two games featured the Hero of Time from Ocarina of Time, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the 3DS/Wii U installments of Smash saw the inclusion of the Hero of Twilight from Twilight Princess, and Ultimate replaced both with the Hero of the Wild from Breath of the Wild.
  • Zelda - The Hylian princess and namesake of the franchise, who has also appeared in multiple incarnations over the course of time, wielding the Triforce of Wisdom, and kidnapped by Ganon to have the second Triforce piece. Similar to Link, multiple incarnations of Zelda have appeared in Smash, with Super Smash Bros. Melee, her debut Smash game, featuring her Ocarina of Time incarnation, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the 3DS/Wii U installments of Smash featuring her Twilight Princess incarnation, and Ultimate featuring her A Link to the Past incarnation (with some design cues taken from A Link Between Worlds). The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Zelda being the 2nd character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Kirby and those in his unlock tree up to Pac-Man. After either condition is met, she must be defeated on Temple.
    • Recruiting her in the Sacred Land in the World of Light.
  • Ganondorf - The King of Evil too has appeared in multiple incarnations over the course of time, wielding the Triforce of Power and wanting all three Triforce pieces for himself so he can take over the land of Hyrule. Unlike Link and Zelda, however, Ganondorf is the same being, being cursed to be resurrected repeatedly until the end of time. Usually known by his moniker "Ganon", his Gerudo form takes on the name "Ganondorf", with the latter being able to transform into the former. Ganondorf, like Zelda, made his SSB debut in Super Smash Bros. Melee, appearing in his Ocarina of Time incarnation, before appearing in his Twilight Princess incarnation in both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the 3DS/Wii U installments of Smash, before returning to his Ocarina of Time incarnation in Ultimate. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Ganondorf being the 40th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Yoshi and those in his unlock tree up to Ryu. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Bridge of Eldin.
    • Recruiting him in the Sacred Realm in the World of Light.
  • Sheik - Debuting in Ocarina of Time, Sheik claimed to be a member of the Sheikah clan, and appeared at various times to help Link out, teaching him new songs to play on his ocarina. In the middle of the game, however, Sheik reveals herself to be Zelda in disguise, having used magic to change her appearance to avoid being captured by Ganondorf. Sheik debuted in the SSB series in a unique way, being the first transformation character - she and Zelda could swap between each other via a special move, changing their moveset entirely, before being separated in the 3DS/Wii U installments of Smash due to technical limitations of the 3DS. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Sheik being the 47th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Donkey Kong and those in his unlock tree up to King Dedede. After either condition is met, she must be defeated on Gerudo Valley.
    • Recruiting her in the beginning segment in the World of Light - players have the option to choose between her, Marth, and Villager.
  • Young Link - The younger version of the Hero of Time from Ocarina of Time, later continuing to adventure in Majora's Mask, appeared as a separate character from his older version in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and is one of two characters that did not make another playable Smash appearance until Ultimate, with the other being Pichu. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Young Link being the 8th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Link and those in his unlock tree up to Snake. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Great Bay.
    • Recruiting him in the Sacred Realm in the World of Light.
  • Toon Link - The Hero of Winds, first debuting in The Wind Waker, had a more cartoonish appearance in comparison to the other incarnations of Link, and replaced Young Link in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, before appearing alongside him in Ultimate. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Toon Link being the 44th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Link and those in his unlock tree up to Richter. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Pirate Ship.
    • Recruiting him in Forest Hill in the World of Light.

Metroid characters

  • Samus Aran - Famed bounty hunter known across the galaxy and raised by the Chozo, Samus debuted in the original Metroid, completion of which revealed the shocking surprise that, in spite of the game's manual using masculine pronouns, Samus was a woman. Samus has been a part of the SSB series since the first game.
  • Zero Suit Samus - Debuting in Metroid: Zero Mission, this separate character was still Samus Aran, albeit in a skintight cyan suit instead of her Varia Suit. In this appearance, she relies on her Chozo DNA and training, as well as her Paralyzer gun, instead of her Varia Suit's various weapons. First appearing in the SSB series as a transformable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Samus was able to swap between her Varia Suit and Zero Suit with usage of her Final Smash. In the games following, Zero Suit Samus was separated into her own individual character slot due to technical limitations on the 3DS. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Zero Suit Samus being the 19th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Fox and those in his unlock tree up to Captain Falcon. After either condition is met, she must be defeated on Brinstar.
    • Recruiting her in the volcanic area in the World of Light.
  • Ridley - The iconic villain of the Metroid series first appeared in the original Metroid, and has appeared in every game following, usually as the main protagonist. In the Metroid Prime games, he was revived by the Space Pirates by cybernetic technology and became Meta Ridley. He has appeared throughout the SSB series, usually as a boss or a non-playable character, before becoming a playable character in Ultimate - this is noteworthy, as he had been requested by fans ever since the first game. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Ridley being the 25th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Yoshi and those in his unlock tree up to Lucina. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Norfair.
    • Recruiting him in Forest Hill in the World of Light.
  • Dark Samus - A being created from Phazon energy and the Metroid Prime itself, this dark doppelgänger first appeared as a major character in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. She later appeared in the SSB series as an Assist Trophy in the 3DS/Wii U installments, before being upgraded to a playable character in Ultimate. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Dark Samus being the 50th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Samus and those in her unlock tree up to Incineroar. After either condition is met, she must be defeated on Frigate Orpheon.
    • Recruiting her in The Final Battle portion in the World of Light.

Kid Icarus characters

  • Pit - The servant to the goddess Palutena, Pit debuted in the original Kid Icarus, as an angel who cannot fly, saving Palutena from Medusa with help from the Three Sacred Treasures. His appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a playable character later influenced the choice to give his franchise a new title in the form of Kid Icarus Uprising, in which his character and universe was fleshed out by the Smash series creator, Masahiro Sakurai. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Pit being the 4th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Samus and those in her unlock tree up to Wii Fit Trainer. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Skyworld.
    • Recruiting him in the Temple of Light in the World of Light.
  • Palutena - The goddess of light, she too debuted in the original Kid Icarus, where she was kidnapped by Medusa and needed Pit's help. In Kid Icarus Uprising, she helps Pit defeat the Underworld Army by giving him the Power of Flight, allowing him to fly through the air for a limited time, as well as communicating with him through his various battles. She first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a background character, but became playable in the following games. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Palutena being the last character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Kirby and those in his unlock tree up to Lucas. After either condition is met, she must be defeated on Palutena's Temple.
    • Recruiting her as the last fighter in the World of Light.
  • Dark Pit - Introduced in Kid Icarus Uprising, this antagonistic doppelgänger of Pit was created via the Mirror of Truth, meant to be a servant to Pandora, but because the mirror was shattered, Dark Pit instead became a lone wolf-type character. He first appeared in the SSB series in the 3DS/Wii U installments, though his creation stemmed from an alternate costume Pit had in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The character can be unlocked by:
    • Going through VS Matches, with Dark Pit being the 54th character to unlock, or Classic Mode with Samus and those in her unlock tree up to Wario. After either condition is met, he must be defeated on Reset Bomb Forest.
    • Recruiting him in Dracula's Castle in the World of Light.

    • Recruiting it in the Power Plant in the World of Light.
  • Mewtwo - National Pokédex number #150, and a legendary Pokémon, Mewtwo is a tall Psychic-type humanoid Pokémon first appearing in the Generation I titles created from the DNA of Mew. After the success of the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, it was featured as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and was cut from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, before returning as the series's first DLC character in the 3DS/Wii U installments, being free to download a week early if players registered both the 3DS and Wii U titles with Club Nintendo. In the 3DS/Wii U installments, the trainer was absent, instead being represented by a lone Charizard.
