Throughout the course of Dragon Quest Monsters the player, as Terry, must journey from the kingdom of GreatTree to mystic worlds via Travelers' Gates (Travel Gates / Teleportals) in order to acquire monsters powerful enough to help him succeed in the Starry Night Tournament. The following is a list of these Travelers' Gates by name and gives the number of floors they have, the requirements for accessing them, and a description of the gate's contents.

There are three main categories of Traveler's Gates: Main Traveler's Gates (all found within the Chamber of Traveler's Gates), Hidden Traveler's Gates (found throughout the kingdom, accessed through certain conditions), and Family Traveler's Gates (containing only monsters of a specific family, all only available post-game). Note that only three of the main Traveler's Gates are required to clear within the story; all the others are optional.

Each of the Traveler's Gates have randomized floors, a set number of floors, and a unique set of encountered monsters. Within each floor is a hole that leads to the next floor. It is possible to randomly access a special room (substituting for a randomized area for that floor number) such as a church, a shop, an arena, a treasure room, and a maze (consisting of tree mazes and rotating tile mazes). Aside from the maze areas, Terry can record his journal in these special rooms. Otherwise, Terry must use a BookMark to record his journal within a Traveler's Gate.

At the bottom of each Traveler's Gate is the boss room (most of which are based on elements in the mainstream Dragon Quest games). To clear the Traveler's Gate, Terry must defeat the boss monster in battle. Once Terry does so, the gate will be cleared (indicated based on the portal, which will stop spinning in the original and PS1 remake, and will change from a red to blue aura in the Nintendo 3DS remake). In the original and PS1 remake, there are three types of boss monsters: those that join Terry unconditionally, those that join Terry if given enough meat (typically 4-5 Sirloins), and those that do not join Terry at all. In the 3DS remake, all Traveler's Gate bosses (including post-game bosses) will join Terry (with no option to refuse the request) with two exceptions: Hacksaurus and Dhuran. To reach the boss in the original and PS1 remake, Terry must approach the boss, usually by clear a puzzle; in the 3DS remake, the boss will always engage Terry as soon as he arrives in the boss room.

Main Gates

The Travelers' Gates primarily visited throughout the normal course of the game. The monsters get progressively stronger with each gate, and most of the bosses encountered at the beginning will want to join Terry after being defeated. While most new gates open with wins at the Monster Arena, some gates and even rank battles cannot be accessed until a certain gate is completed. These three story-central gates are those of Beginning, Anger, and Reflection. Only these three gates are mandatory for the completion of the storyline; the others, while highly recommended, are optional. The two former monster masters in the Arena will give Terry descriptions of the two most recently unlocked main gates, while the jester in the throne room (the one guarding the King's exit door to the right of the throne) will give Terry recorded descriptions of the bosses.

Gate of Beginning

Floors: 4

Requirements: Collect Slib from Pulio

Monsters: Slime, Dracky, Anteater

Boss: Healer ("Hale"), Male

Joins: Yes

Details: This is the first Travelers' Gate the player will go through in the game and as such houses the lowest level of monsters that can be found. There are only four floors to this gate with all occupied by Slimes, Drackies, and Anteaters. All random battles will consist of only one enemy monster. In the 3DS remake, Fluffy will give Terry a tutorial on how to battle and scout monsters. The boss of the gate is a Healer, likely based off of Healie from Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. It is the monster that escaped from the farm and will join the party after being defeated.

It should be noted that money will not be found on the ground in this gate. This was done to prevent players from skipping rank G, the only arena battles that require no payment to participate in. Due to this, if a coin is seen on the ground in this gate than it is undoubtedly a Tiny Medal.

Also, unlike later gates, the Gate of Beginning does not have any randomly accessible special rooms.

Interestingly, even if Terry does not let Hale join his team, none of the following dialogues will be altered (Hale thanking Terry for letting him join his team, and the King allowing for Hale to be with Terry instead of him).

In the original, the boss room and the floor before it will still play the normal Traveler's Gate theme (being the only Traveler's Gate to do so). In the PS1 and 3DS remake, the overworld theme will change to Homeland, indicating the boss's reference to Dragon Quest IV.

Gate of Villager

Floors: 4

Requirements: Clear G Class

StubSucks & GoHoppers, Anteaters & Gremlins were there.. StubSucks can cast Sleep. Be careful! Be careful when GoHoppers charge their power! The guardian there is a Dragon. Its FireAir will cause great damage to your monsters! Take plenty of herbs with you.

Monsters: StubSuck, GoHopper, Anteater, Picky, Gremlin, PillowRat

Boss: Dragon ("Dran"), Male

Dragon loves girls. It carried a princess away & nobody knows what happened after that. It is an old fairy tale.

Joins: Yes

Details: After participating and winning in the arena for the first time, players will have access to two new gates, a pattern that will essentially continue for the remainder of the game. The Gate of Villager is the same as Beginning when comparing size, but more items can be found lying about and the monsters are much stronger. The boss is the Dragon from the original Dragon Quest that was charged with the task of guarding the princess. It joins the party after being defeated. To trigger the boss battle, Terry must first speak to Laura, but, when he unsuccessfully tries to carry her out, she says that she prefers to wait for a hero to rescue her "properly".

If Terry returns to the Room of Villager later, the princess will still be there, waiting for her hero.

Gate of Talisman

Floors: 5

Requirements: Clear G Class

There will be Spookys, ArmyAnts, Anteaters, and Goopis there! ArmyAnts will make you Sleep while they attack! The guardian there is a Golem. When it charges its power, watch for its next turn. The Golem is vulnerable to Sleep spells.

Monsters: Spooky, ArmyAnt, Anteater, MiniDrak, Goopi, Picky

Boss: Golem ("Golm"), Male

The stone guard fell asleep from the flute & became a mountain. These words were written on a wall in an ancient city.

Joins: Yes

Details: Compared to its partner gate, the Gate of Villager, the Gate of Talisman has considerably stronger monsters, especially if the player forgoes Villager and goes to Talisman first. The boss is the Golem from the original Dragon Quest that guards the entrance to a walled settlement. A cutscene will occur where Warubou will try to enter the village but is prevented from doing so by Golem.

Like in the original Dragon Quest, Golem will be vulnerable to Sleep spells. Due to its high attack, it is highly recommended that the player exploit this weakness. Two monsters available at this point learn Sleep: Dracky and StubSuck.

Gate of Memories

Floors: 4

Requirements: Clear F Class

There were Goopis, PillowRats, DragonKids, Catapilas, Pickys, and FairyDraks living there. Sometimes, SpotSlimes show up. Be careful. They can call others for help! The guardian there is the MadCat. It can cast a SquallHit faster than anybody. If you're slow, you'll be toast!

Monsters: Goopi, PillowRat, DragonKid, Catapila, Picky, FairyRat, SpotSlime

Boss: MadCat ("Gig"), Male

A monster is living deep in a cave. The monster screams with a peculiar voice as if it is calling someone. From the journey diary of the legendary master Mary.

Joins: Yes

Details: The boss is a MadCat, and is based off of the encounter with Saber in the Monster's Den in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

Gate of Bewilder

Floors: 5

Requirements: Clear F Class

There were MiniDraks, BigRoosts, EvilSeeds, Demonites, SpotSlimes and Horks living there. When all of your monsters are paralyzed you're finished. Don't forget some MoonHerbs! The guardian there is the FaceTree. It will cast a curse. A curse is a real threat. Use Laurels to cure curses. The monsters in the plant family are vulnerable to fire attacks!

Monsters: MiniDrak, BigRoost, DragonKid, SpotSlime, EvilSeed, Demonite, Crestpent

Boss: FaceTree ("Face"), Male

My years of research led me to believe that... Sometimes mushrooms, rocks & trees with faces are born. From the report of the first director of the library.

Joins: Yes

Details: The boss is a FaceTree. It resides at the end of a forest maze, which the player must transverse while battling the Stubsucks that try to get in the player's way. These Stubsucks are considerably stronger than the ones that appear on the world map, and while recruitable, will require Ribs and Sirloins (which the player is very unlikely to have acquired at this point in the game). Interestingly, even if the Stubsucks are recruited, they still remain on the world map. In the 3DS remake, since the Treeface will engage Terry in battle right away, the boss battle will consist of two Stump chumps as well as Treeface.

In the original and PS1 remake, the overworld theme for the boss room and the floor before it will be Homeland, while in the 3DS remake it will instead be Toward the Horizon.

Gate of Peace

Floors: 7

Requirements: Clear E Class

There were BigRoosts, SpotSlimes, CoilBirds, DragonKids, Crestpents, BoneSlaves, Almirajs, Horks and BullBirds living there. The Crestpents have PoisonHit! The guardian there is the FangSlime. When it charges its power, watch your remaining HP!

Monsters: BigRoost, SpotSlime, CoilBird, Crestpent, DragonKid, BoneSlave, Almiraj, Hork, BullBird

Boss: FangSlime ("Fang"), Male

Discretion is the better part of valor. Danger! Do not talk to the people who are not making much money!! A quote from Make Your Money Grow.

Joins: Yes

Details: The Room of Peace is a casino exclusively for monsters, and is likely based off of the ones that appear throughout the main series games. The boss is a FangSlime, which is having bad luck with the slots and causing trouble, much to the casino workers' chagrins. To engage FangSlime in battle, the player must play the slots at least once (since the prizes are "monster gold", they will not count towards the player's actual currency).

Gate of Bravery

Floors: 8

Requirements: Clear E Class

There are Demonites, BeanMen, 1EyeClowns, FloraMen, SabreMen, GiantWorms, and BullBirds living there! The FloraMan can use Firebane! The guardian there is the BigEye. It will use IceAir & SnowStorm. Beasts are vulnerable to spells and air attacks!

Monsters: Demonite, BeanMan, 1EyeClown, FloraMan, SabreMan, GiantWorm, BullBird

Boss: BigEye

Despair is a part of hope! Hope is embedded in despair! A quote from Happy Ways to Overcome Your Despair.

Joins: No

Details: The Room of Bravery is based off of Abovitall Tower in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. To reach the boss, the player will need to transverse through the gap with the invisible floors. If the player completes the Traveler's Gates in sequential order, this gate will be the first time the player encounters future Terry. This cutscene will not happen if the player completes the Gate of Reflection first.

Gate of Strength

Floors: 10

Requirements: Clear the Gate of Anger

There are MudDolls, TreeSlimes, SkulRiders, WingTrees, FairyDraks, and DrakSlimes living there! TreeSlimes there will get you with Paralyze. Don't forget to take some MoonHerbs with you! The guardian there is a StoneMan. Objects are resistant to IceBolt and Blizzard!

Monsters: MudDoll, TreeSlime, SkulRider, FairyDrak, WingTree, DrakSlime

Boss: StoneMan

I looked back and the stone statue was not at the same place! It's the story about a man who survived his journey.

Joins: No

Details: The boss is a Stoneman and is based off of the statue that ambushes the player in Uptaten Towers in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. Note that despite how the Gate of Strength is not accessible until after clearing the Gate of Anger, it is always listed before the Gate of Anger, as well as having slightly weaker monsters and a weaker boss.

Gate of Anger

Floors: 10

Requirements: Clear D Class

There were GiantWorms, Poisongons, GiantSlugs, CatFlys, Eyeders, Putrepups, and DrakSlimes there. DrakSlime's BlazeAir is powerful! Antidote is a must because there are monsters with poison. The guardian there is BattleRex. It's EvilSlash is an outrageous skill. Dragons are really resistant to fire attacks!

Monsters: GiantWorm, GiantSlug, Poisongon, Catfly, Eyeder, PutrePup, DrakSlime

Boss: BattleRex ("Wrex"), Female

The victor made countless eggs vanish instantly. How do you like it? This is the legend of Terry!

Joins: Yes

Details: After clearing rank D, the King of GreatTree will request Terry to venture into the Gate of Anger, as a large amount of monsters have been spawning from the portal and into the kingdom, presenting a danger. Until Terry does this, he will not be able to compete in the arena, nor will any further gates be opened.

The Room of Anger is based off of Wayferer's Pass in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. A BattleRex resides in the area, and is surrounded by eggs (which are the source of GreatTree's problems). The player must interact with at least one egg to trigger the following sequences. Each egg, once interacted with, will hatch into a DragonKid that is more powerful than the ones that appear in the wild. They are recruitable but will require Ribs and Sirloins.

After defeating at least one DragonKid, the player will interact with BattleRex. She will be angered by Terry's meddling of her brethren, and will command him to leave at once. At that moment, the adult Terry will appear. He will question BattleRex (the contents of the conversation not being audible), and unsatisfied with her responses, will magically destroy all the remaining eggs in the room (inadvertently completing the King's quest himself). Furious at this, BattleRex will attack the player, thinking that he was the one who destroyed her eggs.

After the battle, BattleRex will make a cryptic comment that the man from before bore a resemblance to the player, hinting at the cloaked man's true identity.

Gate of Joy

Floors: 13

Requirements: Clear C Class

There were Snailys, Saccers, Gulpples, MadPeckers, EyeBalls, Babbles, & Mummys living there. Beware of monsters with Paralyze & PoisonHit. You might want to take monsters with Antidote & NumbOff. The guardian there is a FunkyBird. It will confuse you by dancing the PaniDance! You'll need a SkyBell to cure the confusion.

Monsters: Snaily, Saccer, Gulpple, MadPecker, EyeBall, Babble, Mummy

Boss: FunkyBird ("Func"), Female

A bird spins a round on the stage. It is a poem with a hint of the exotic...

Joins: Yes

Details: The Room of Joy is a theater, likely based off of the ones that appear throughout the main series games. The boss is a FunkyBird, which is the main attraction of the dance theater. The player must interact with FunkyBird twice to trigger the battle.

Gate of Wisdom

Floors: 14

Requirements: Clear C Class

There are Facers, Tonguellas, FloraJays, Pteranods, and ArmorPedes living there! Florajays use BeastCut. The guardian there is a SkyDragon. Its Scorching is powerful! You might want to take monsters from the Objects or Dragons families.

Monsters: Facer, Tonguella, FloraJay, Pteranod, Armorpede

Boss: SkyDragon

If you want to meet the Dragon, you should know its habits. A quote from the Record of the Journey by the legendary monster master, Mary.

Joins: No

Details: The Room of Wisdom is a maze, based off of Fifer's Spire in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation. The boss is a SkyDragon. It flies about at the very top, and will mechanically move around based on Terry's own movements within the maze. The easiest way to reach the SkyDragon is the following: go to the far right rope and climb it until the dragon goes to the rope second to the left, then descend and head straight up that rope. If the player wishes to start over, falling into the gap will reset everything.

Gate of Happiness

Floors: 17

Requirements: Clear B Class

There are Onionos, Gophecadas, Pixys, Gasgons, DeadNites, StubBirds, and SpikyBoys living there. Gophecadas use Beat. Get'em before they get you. The guardian there is a Jamirus. Watch out for its QuadHits!

Monsters: Oniono, Gophecada, Pixy, Gasgon, DeadNite, StubBird, SpikyBoy

Boss: Jamirus

In the kingdom I visited, there was a monster giving a speech. I was overwhelmed by its passion and could not talk to it. A quote from the anonymous record of a journey.

Joins: No

Details: The Room of Happiness is based off of the Isle o' Smiles in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. The boss is a Jamirus and, as an obvious callback to its original appearance, is giving a speech to its monster audience about a future of monster paradise. The player must interact with Jamirus twice to engage the battle.

Gate of Temptation

Floors: 19

Requirements: Clear B Class

There are SpikyBoys, KingCobras, Mommonjas, SlimeNites, StagBugs, MistyWings, and DarkEyes living there. KingCobras use a poisonous attack. PalsyAir of DarkEye will paralyze all. You should take a monster with NumbOff! The guardian there is a Servant. It always shows up with Centasaur and EvilArmor!

Monsters: Spikyboy, KingCobra, Mommonja, SlimeNite, StagBug, MistyWing, DarkEye

Boss: Servant ("Mats"), Male

The legend of the village of Lifecod. The evil lord sent Servant from the bowels of hell...to enslave the burning village. Only a mighty hero can save them.

Joins: Maybe

Details: The Room of Temptation is a burning village being attacked by monsters, as a reference to Weaver's Peak in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. The boss is a Servant. To engage it in battle, Terry must answer "no" to its question, which is whether the player wishes to join the monsters in destroying the village. If Terry answers "yes", he will need to talk to the boss again and answer "no".

This is the only boss battle where the fight is not a solo battle (as the Servant is flanked by a Centasaur and EvilArmor). As always, the Servant must be defeated last if Terry wishes to recruit him (the other two are not recruitable).

After clearing the gate, if the player returns to the Room of Temptation, the fires will have been put out.

Gate of Labyrinth

Floors: 22

Requirements: Clear A Class

There are RockSlimes, Chamelgons, CactiBalls, TailEaters, DuckKites, AgDevils, and WindMerges living there. TailEaters use PoisonAir, DuckKites use Curse, CactiBalls use Paralyze! The guardian there is a DarkHorn. It blocks spells with StopSpell!

Monsters: RockSlime, Chamelgon, Cactiball, TailEater, Gismo, DuckKite, AgDevil, WindMerge

Boss: DarkHorn ("Dark"), Male

A quote from the journal of a journey by the legendary monster master, Mary: It's a mysterious cave that seems to go on forever. It looks like there are many paths, but there is only one way to go to find the DarkHorn.

Joins: Maybe

Details: The Room of Labyrinth is a maze, based off of the Cryptic Catacombs in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation (although the boss itself is more so based off of the Second Test in the Hallowed Hollow). The Room of Labyrinth must be traveled in a specific set of directions, and will go on forever unless the player does so. The directions can be obtained in-game by the sleeping Dragon in the monster stables, which are: Up, Up, Up, Left, Down, Down, upper Left. If the player wishes to give up, there are teleportals in every room, which will send the player back to GreatTree with the gate being left incomplete.

The boss is a DarkHorn.

Gate of Judgment

Floors: 24

Requirements: Clear A Class

There are WeedBugs, HammerMen, MadGeese, TreeBoys, are SpotKings, Drolls, LizardFlys, And GiantMoths living there. Beware of EvilSlash and of HammerMen! The guardian there is an Akubar. It uses Focus and Explodet!

Monsters: WeedBug, HammerMan, MadGoose, TreeBoy, SpotKing, Droll, LizardFly, GiantMoth

Boss: Akubar

A quote from the first victor of the tournament. A master is one who commands monsters in fights. You must trust and love your monsters. Without trust, no true master will emerge.

Joins: No

Details: The Room of Judgment is based off of Gallows Moor in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. The boss is an Akubar. To engage it in battle, the player must answer a set of questions posed by Akubar. First, Akubar will condemn Terry for committing the crime of "abusing" monsters repeatedly. He will then prompt whether Terry recognizes his sin. If Terry answers "no", the battle will start. If Terry answers "yes", Akubar will then sentence Terry to death, and ask Terry if he accepts this punishment. If Terry answers "no", the battle will start. If Terry answers "yes", Akubar will command Terry to approach the nearby guillotine. Terry must interact with the guillotine and then approach Akubar once more. Akubar will ask if Terry has something to say. Regardless of his answer, the battle will start at this point.

Gate of Reflection

Floors: 28

Requirements: Clear S Class

I don't want to tell you this. I think EvilBeasts, Shadows, EvilWands, SlimeBorgs, LizardMen, Grizzlys, and FireWeeds were there. I remember there was a monster that uses PalsyAir. The guardian there was Durran, or something like that...

I see... I don't remember much... But I think there were Wyverns, Lionexes, MadHornets, RotRavens, and JewelBags living there. I think, MadHornets attack with poison and paralysis... The guardian there was... No, I cannot. I have a headache! Leave me alone!

Monsters: EvilBeast, Shadow, EvilWand, SlimeBorg, LizardMan, Grizzly, Wyvern, FireWeed, MadHornet, Lionex, RotRaven, JewelBag

Boss: Durran

Far beyond the Gate, lives your future self. Do not lose your true self, even if you meet your future self. A quote from the journal of a journey by a legendary monster master, Mary.

Joins: No

Details: The Gate of Reflection is the third and last required gate (as it must be completed to participate in the Starry Night Tournament). Since there is still time before the tournament starts, the King will order Terry to venture into the Gate of Reflection, as it is said that one will encounter his or her future self within. By doing so, the King hopes to find out the verdict of the tournament. It is said that no one cleared the Gate of Reflection before (some not even returning from their travels). The two NPC's in the arena who give Terry information on the main Traveler's Gates are said to have given up on their Monster Master careers after returning from the Gate of Reflection. When spoken to after clearing S Class, each of them will only give Terry partial information on the Gate of Reflection and will express extreme discomfort in the process, indicating that the experience left them traumatized.

The Room of Reflection, as well as the boss battles, are references to the battle within Cloudsgate Citadel in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. Note that two battles occur prior to the one with Durran: either one (in the 3DS remake) or two (in the original and PS1 remake) Servants (whose attacks are identical to the one from the Gate of Temptation), and a "TERRY?" monster (which is really the adult version of Terry). Note that if the player loses against either Terry or Durran, he will not be required to reengage the preceding boss battles when reattempting the Gate of Reflection. In the 3DS remake, the battle theme with Dhuran will be Ultimate True Evil, which is used during final boss battles in the Monster series. Note that the Servants can be recruited if given enough meat, and can be either gender.

After Durran is defeated, adult Terry (whose identity is finally confirmed at this point) will approach his younger self and thank him for saving him, as well as apologizing for insulting him earlier in the Gate of Anger. Adult Terry will give young Terry the following advice: do not pursue power as it will consume and change him for the worst, and protect his sister at all costs. Afterwards, he will be whisked away by Warubou (in the original) or teleport himself away (in the PS1 and 3DS remakes). Soon afterwards, younger Terry will be returned to GreatTree by Watabou. Back in the throne room, the King will express disappointment that Terry did not find anything out about the tournament, but will nevertheless be unfazed as he has complete confidence in Terry.

Hidden Gates

Gates that can essentially be accessed at any time, barring a few that require progression through the story before they can be accessed. The monsters within these gates are usually more powerful than those the player would normally encounter if they take the time to access them instead of venturing through the main gates and beating rank battles. These gates have floors much smaller and easier to navigate than the main Traveler's Gates. It is recommended that the player use hidden gates to look for foreign masters, as the simpler mechanics of these floors allow for foreign master appearances to be easier to predict. The jester in the throne room will give Terry descriptions of the bosses in the hidden gates if he says "yes" to the first two prompts and "no" to the third one.

Bazaar Gate #1

Floors: 8

Requirements: Clear G Class; expendable monster with a fire skill OR win the Starry Night Tournament

Monsters: FairyRat, BigRoost, SpotSlime, Crestpent, DragonKid, Catapila, BeanMan, Demonite, Hork, 1EyeClown

Boss: MadKnight ("Pash"), Male

The devil settled in a town of ruins. As if a guardian of the ruins... This is the last record of the lost town.

Joins: Yes

Details: Likely the first hidden gate players will find, accessed by giving the two men at a stove in the bazaar a monster with a fire skill to get their stove started. If the player wins the Starry Night Tournament without unlocking this gate, the two men will move their stove on top of the teleportal for Bazaar Gate #2 regardless, thus bypassing the original unlocking requirement. While accessible after clearing Class G, the monsters present in this gate are on par with those that would be encountered after clearing Class F.

The boss is a MadKnight, based off of the one from the original Dragon Quest that guarded Erdrick's armor in the ruined town of Hauksness. There is a good chance that MadKnight will use its skill Massacre on itself instead of the player, doing major damage to itself and potentially finishing the battle with minimal effort on the player's end.

Well Gate

Floors: 11

Requirements: Clear E Class; expendable monster with a lightning skill

Monsters: BoneSlave, Almiraj, FloraMan, GiantSlug, TreeSlime, GiantWorm, BullBird, MudDoll, SaberMan, Metaly

Boss: Gigantes ("Gant"), Male

In an enormous underground dungeon. I fear pitfalls with every step I take... Will I ever make it out? A quote from the masterpiece, A Journey to Londelkia.

Joins: Maybe

Details: After clearing E Class, the doctor under the well will ask Terry for a monster with a lightning skill. After Terry does so, the doctor's cauldron will be destroyed, revealing a Traveler's Gate underneath it.

The monsters in this gate are on par with those encountered after clearing Class E. Note that Metalys can appear on the later floors, thus making this gate an optimal place to level up monsters during the early-to-mid portions of the game. The last floor is a cavern filled with pitfalls, and is based off of the Cave to Rendarak in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line. Once Terry reaches this location, Warubou will appear and will attempt to transverse the maze before falling into one of the pitfalls. This will serve as a hint to Terry, as the tiles that Warubou used are safe. If Terry falls through one of the pitfalls, he will end up back where he started (with the hole being covered back up).

Standing at the very end of the path will be the boss, Gigantes (while his position is directly south of Terry's starting point, the single tile in between the two is a pitfall, thus requiring Terry to transverse the entire area before reaching Gigantes).

Monster Farm Gate

Floors: 11

Requirements: Clear the Gate of Anger

Monsters: FairyDrak, Butterfly, MadRaven, SkullRoo, Mudron, DrakSlime

Boss: Copycat ("Mime"), Female

Sometimes a lie makes people happy but... eventually makes them unhappy... It's the mumbling of a man who was deceived by a monster.

Joins: Yes

Details: After clearing the Gate of Anger and triggering the first earthquake, the Traveler's Gate at the northeast end of the monster farm will be accessible.

The monsters in this gate are on par with those encountered after clearing Class D. The last floor is actually one of the houses in GreatTree, with the interior being inaccessible prior due to the resident blocking the way past the entrance to protect his "Betty". The woman is actually a CopyCat in disguise. When interacted with, the disguised figure will ask Terry why he's here, with the following prompt in order: because of her beauty, if he was a thief, because of her beauty, if he was a Monster Master here to capture her, because of her beauty, and if he was a Monster Master here to capture her. The battle will start if Terry answers "yes" to the fourth and sixth prompt, or if he answers "no" to all six of her prompts.

Initially, the CopyCat will be fairly weak. However, it will transform itself into one of the player's monsters, copying said monster's skills and stats (besides HP). After defeating the boss and clearing the gate, the man will express dismay that his "Betty" was actually a CopyCat when interacted with (which can be done directly via his house's entrance in GreatTree, rather than going through the entire gate again). After the Starry Night Tournament, the man's dialogue will change, expressing his resolve to find the real Betty (as the CopyCat must have obtained its disguise from a real human).

Goopi's Gate #1

Floors: 15

Requirements: Clear the Gate of Anger; beat Goopi #2 in rock-paper-scissors five times in a row

Monsters: WingSlime, MadCandle, MedusaEye, MadGopher, Slabbit, WindBeast, Gasgon

Boss: Digster ("Ebi")

A mysterious spring where mysterious spirits live. Sometimes the spirits test the heart of travelers. A quote from the diary of a logger.

Joins: Yes

Details: After clearing the Gate of Anger and triggering the first earthquake, the second Goopi will be accessible via a new path at the bottom of GreatTree. To beat him in rock-paper-scissors, Terry must choose the following: Bomb, Crab, Babble, Babble, Bomb. Upon doing so, the left Watabou statue in the arena will move, allowing access to its Traveler's Gate. The monsters in this gate are on par with those encountered after clearing Class C, and thus the gate is more difficult than the ones accessed at around this time.

The last floor is based off of Aurhea's Fountain in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation. When Terry approaches the lake, Warubou will appear out of nowhere, nab Terry's lead monster, and drop it into the lake. The spirit of the lake will call out to Terry, asking if Terry lost one of his companions. When Terry answers "yes", the spirit will ask Terry if the following are the ones he lost: a meat item, an old guy, and the monster. Terry must answer "no", "no", and "yes". If Terry answers any of the four questions incorrectly, he will be thrown back to GreatTree, forcing him to redo the entire Traveler's Gate (although the lost monster is returned to him regardless). Once Terry answers all the spirit's questions correctly, the spirit will reward Terry's honesty with a Digster, provided that he can defeat it - thus triggering the boss battle. Note that Digster can be either gender.

Unique to this gate is that the spirit will transport Terry back to GreatTree following the boss battle rather than Watabou. Also unique to this gate is that if Terry returns to the last floor after clearing the gate, rather than a portal being present to transport Terry back to GreatTree, the spirit will transport Terry back instead.

Medal Man's Gate

Floors: 18

Requirements: Collect 19 Tinymedals, obtain the ZapBird egg, and speak to Metaly

Monsters: NiteWhip, BoxSlime, Gismo, Orc, RogueNite, Reaper

Boss: KingSlime ("Kix"), Female; Lipsy ("LP"); Toadstool ("FG"), Female

Choose one of the three Gates! One is the Room of the King. The other is the Room of Sweet Smells, and the last is the Room of Lips... A quote from Help for the Lost.

Joins: Maybe

Details: To unlock this gate, Terry must collect 19 Tinymedals, obtain the ZapBird egg from the Medal Man, and then speak to his Metaly. While this dungeon can be accessed as soon as both the Medal Man's chambers and Tinymedals are available (which is after clearing the Gate of Beginner for the former and G Class for the latter), the monsters in this gate are on par with those encountered after clearing Class B (which is also around the time when the player will have realistically collected 19 Tinymedals to begin with).

The last floor is based off of Gardsbane Tower in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation (specifically the floor with three doors and the riddle). As such, Terry has the choice of three doors with each door holding a different boss: the left leads to Lipsy, the middle leads to Kingslime, and the right leads to Toadstool. Terry may only choose once so it is strongly recommended to choose the room with the Kingslime. All three bosses require meat to be recruited. Note that Lipsy can be either gender.

Library Gate

Floors: 24

Requirements: Collect 100 species of monsters

Monsters: ArcDemon, AmberWeed, ArmyCrab, MadSpirit, CurseLamp, WildApe, Tortagon, LandOwl

Boss: Orochi

Far across the ocean, is the country of Jipangu. A dragon with 8 heads lives there. Its name is Orochi! A quote from the diary of a legendary victor.

Joins: No

Details: To unlock this gate, Terry must collect at least 100 different monster species and speak with the librarian blocking the entrance to the restricted room. While this dungeon can be accessed whenever Terry fulfills its requirement (which can be as soon as breeding is first available), the monsters in this gate are on par with those encountered after clearing Class A and thus can be overly difficult if attempted too early on.

The boss is an Orochi, and is based off of its appearance in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation at its cavern lair. Note that if the player defeats this boss before completing the Gate of Reflection, a cutscene will occur where Orochi, upset over its loss, will try to destroy its surroundings, and adult Terry will arrive and finish off the monster before it is too late.

Family Gates

Gates that can only be accessed after completing the game (winning the Starry Night Tournament and saving after the credits). Each gate holds monsters of a particular family and features either a final boss or major antagonist of one of the mainstream games at the last floor. Note that none of the boss monsters are recruitable. While six of these gates are already available through the Chamber of Traveler's Gates, the remaining three must be uncovered similarly to hidden gates. The earlier floors of these gates hold monsters previously encountered during the main play-through of the game and thus will be utterly underwhelming for the player (as these monsters are not any different stat-wise from those encountered in previous gates). These gates are absent in the 3DS remake, being replaced by ones that feature major antagonists and final bosses of the Monsters series instead.

Gate of Ambition

Floors: 29

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament

Monsters: GoHopper, ArmyAnt, Catapila, GiantWorm, GiantSlug, Eyeder, Butterfly, Armorpede, Gophecada, StagBug, TailEater, WeedBug, Droll, GiantMoth, ArmyCrab, MadHornet

Boss: DracoLord

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Bug family. The boss is DracoLord of the original Dragon Quest in his first form. When interacted with, DracoLord will ask Terry if he wishes to join DracoLord in ruling the world, as he did in his original appearance. However, even if Terry answers "yes", it will be of no consequence as DracoLord will remark that Terry is too young to join him and engage him in battle anyways. In the middle of the battle, it is likely that DracoLord will use BeDragon, which will transform him into his true form (although in this game, all enemy monsters that use BeDragon take on this appearance). Note that DracoLord is the easiest of all the family gate boss monsters, and the player may wish to attempt this dungeon before the others.

Gate of Demolition

Floors: 28

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament

Monsters: StubSuck, EvilSeed, BeanMan, FloraMan, WingTree, Gulpple, MadPlant, Oniono, Cactiball, TreeBoy, AmberWeed, FireWeed, ManEater, DanceVegi, Snapper

Boss: Hargon (first time), Sidoh (second time)

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Plant family. Unique to the Gate of Demolition is that there are two bosses, requiring Terry to transverse this gate twice to complete it. The first boss is Hargon from Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line. After defeating him, both Hargon and Watabou will hint towards a greater threat. Indeed, once Terry goes through the Gate of Demolition again (its portal still spinning an indication that it is not complete), he will encounter Sidoh, the true final boss of Dragon Quest II.

Gate of Mastermind

Floors: 26

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament

Monsters: Dracky, Picky, BigRoost, BullBird, MadRaven, MadPecker, FloraJay, StubBird, MistyWing, DuckKite, MadGoose, LandOwl, Wyvern, MadCondor, ZapBird, WhipBird

Boss: Baramos

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Bird family. The boss is Baramos of Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation.

Gate of Control

Monsters: Slime, SpotSlime, Metaly, TreeSlime, DrakSlime, Snaily, Babble, WingSlime, Slabbit, SlimeNite, BoxSlime, RockSlime, SpotKing, Slimeborg, Metabble

Boss: Zoma

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Slime family. The boss is Zoma, the final boss of Dragon Quest III. The last 9 floors are the only locations in the entire game where Terry can encounter Metabble, the highest source of experience in the game. Thus, this gate is the best location for farming experience.

Gate of Extinction

Floors: 29

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament

Monsters: Gremlin, Demonite, 1EyeClown, SkulRider, EyeBall, MedusaEye, Pixy, DarkEye, Orc, AgDevil, ArcDemon, EvilBeast, Lionex, Grendal, Ogre, GoatHorn

Boss: Pizzaro

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Devil family. The boss is Pizzaro, the final boss of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, in his final and trademark form.

Gate of Sleep

Floors: 29

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament

Monsters: Spooky, Hork, BoneSlave, PutrePup, Mudron, Mummy, DeadNite, NiteWhip, Reaper, WindMerge, MadSpirit, Shadow, RotRaven, DarkCrab, Skullgon, Skeletor, DeadNoble

Boss: Estark

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Zombie family. The boss is Estark. While the music in the last floor is of Dragon Quest IV, the surroundings of the area, as well as Esterk's dialogue, are based off of his appearance in Dragon Quest V. As always, Esterk has no recollection of who he is, and he is vulnerable to Sleep spells.

Bazaar Gate #2

Floors: 29

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament; monster with a summoning skill

Monsters: Goopi, SaberMan, CoilBird, MudDoll, Facer, MadCandle, SpikyBoy, RogueNite, Gismo, CurseLamp, EvilWand, JewelBag, MadMirror, Voodoll, Balzac, MetalDrak, Roboster, BombCrag

Boss: Mirudraas

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Material family. To access this gate, Terry must present the two men at a stove in the bazaar with a monster with a summon skill. Unlike previous instances, this monster will not be taken away from Terry. The boss is Mirudraas, the final boss of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, in his first form.

Goopi's Gate #2

Floors: 26

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament; beat Goopi #3 in rock-paper-scissors five times in a row

Monsters: PillowRat, FairyRat, Almiraj, CatFly, SkullRoo, Saccer, Tonguella, MadGopher, WindBeast, Mommonja, Goategon, HammerMan, WildApe, Grizzly, SuperTen, Yeti, IronTurt, GulpBeast, Trumpeter, Unicorn

Boss: Mudou

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Beast family. To access this gate, Terry must beat the third Goopi in rock-paper-scissors five times in a row (his room is to the right of the second Goopi, accessible upon clearing the Starry Night Tournament and triggering the third and final earthquake). To beat him in rock-paper-scissors, Terry must choose the following: Crab, Bomb, Crab, Bomb, Babble. Upon doing so, the right Watabou statue in the arena will move, allowing access to its Traveler's Gate. The boss is Mudou of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation.

Old Man's Gate

Floors: 29

Requirements: Win the Starry Night Tournament; find out little girl's name and present her grandfather with a GoldSlime

Monsters: MiniDrak, DragonKid, Crestpent, Poisongon, FairyDrak, Pteranod, Gasgon, KingCobra, Chamelgon, LizardFly, Tortagon, LizardMan, Swordgon, WingSnake, Rayburn, Spikerous, MadDragon, Andreal, GreatDrak

Boss: DeathMore

Joins: No

Details: Monsters in this gate are of the Dragon family. To access this gate, Terry must first undergo a series of interactions with the bratty girl at the bottom of GreatTree. Finally impressed with him after winning the tournament, the girl will prompt Terry if he knows her name. To learn her name, Terry must read her father's journals describing his daughter, at the end learning that her name is "Santi". With this new knowledge, Terry will interact with the girl once more. As a favor, Santi will approach her grandfather (the stubborn old man who has been blocking access to a visible Traveler's Gate for the entire game). The old man will be willing to let Terry use his Traveler's Gate under one condition: that Terry present him with a GoldSlime, the strongest Slime monster in the game. Once Terry does so, he will have access to the Traveler's Gate.

The boss is DeathMore, the final boss of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, in his first form. Note that DeathMore is the strongest of all the evil lords, and the player may wish to save this dungeon for last.

Trivia

  • There is coding of a Traveler's Gate that ultimately did not make the final cut for unknown reasons but can be accessed with a GameShark. The contents of the dungeon indicate that it was meant to supersede all other Traveler's Gates in terms of difficulty, having 99 floors and a variety of top-tier monsters. While the final room does not contain a boss, the surroundings indicate that it was supposed to be DarkDrium, the superboss of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, as well as the hardest monster to obtain in the game.
