Mia (マヤ, Maya) is a side character in Dragon Quest XI and a main character in Dragon Quest Treasures. She is the younger sister of Erik.

Appearance and PersonalityEdit

Mia is a young woman with a slim athletic build, light skin, and blue eyes. Much like her older brother, she has light blue hair, which she wears in a high, braided ponytail worn in red hairbands which reaches past her shoulders, as well as some fringe which frames her face. She wears a red and yellow sleeveless vest over a white, midriff-baring tank top, red short shorts with a white leather belt, a yellow scarf around her neck, and pale yellow boots worn with red socks. Mia wears gold armbands on her biceps and jade bracelets on her wrists. Around her neck, she also wears a gold necklace decorated with red gemstones, gifted to her by Erik which granted her the power to turn anything she touched into gold.

Mia and Erik know nothing about their birthplace or parents, as they were found out in the snow near Sniflheim by Vikings as young children and forced to work as their servants. Mia would begin stealing gold from the Vikings whenever she could and developed an obsession with it, something which Erik grew to detest about her. However, the reason that Mia coveted gold was that she wanted to be able to leave the Vikings forever with her brother and be able to live comfortable somewhere else.

Dragon Quest TreasuresEdit

Mia and Erik are the playable characters of the game, having been whisked away to the floating archipelago of Draconia one fateful evening after freeing a pair of unusual creatures from a cage on the main mast of the viking ship they voyaged on. The children soon become swept up in a grand treasure hunt, competing with rival factions such as the villainous Thunderous Plunderers and the friendlier Sylphanian Expedition, all while setting up their own base of operations on Eggshell Island. Mia is partnered with Porcus, who lays on her head when at rest.

TriviaEdit

  • Mia's ability to turn anything she touched into gold, granted to her by the cursed necklace, is a reference to the Greek myth of King Midas, who was granted the same power by the god Dionysus. He soon came to regret his power, as any food and drink he touched would turn to gold, causing him to starve.
  • In the original Japanese version of the game, Mia refers to herself using the pronoun ore (おれ), which is typically used by boys and young men in anime and manga, but can be used by women as well in order to emphasize someone with a rude, gruff, or tomboy personality.
