The Mod Rod is a item that first appeared in Dragon Quest III as the Staff of Change. In the NES Version of Dragon Quest IV, it's called the Staff of Transform. It is also used as an item to transform a character(s) into a different shape. The recent name came from the Nintendo DS Version of Dragon Quest IV.

Dragon Quest III

The staff is originally held by a Boss Troll in Samanao who assumed the form of the king with it. The staff can be traded for the Sailors Thighbone in Greenlad. Upon revisiting the old man, he will have already used the staff assuming a different form per visit. Oddly enough, he can turn into Himiko with it, while the players can't.

It can also be used to buy items from the shop in Elvenham, providing you take the form of a dwarf (or Slime in the Super Famicom or GBC Version). The remakes also allow the player a chance to acquire another Staff of Change within the Pachisi track in Zipangu (after wishing for Divinegon to create it).

Turning into a monster with it allows for the player to talk to the Demonite in Ashalam or the Minidemon on the Phantom Ship without triggering a battle. Though both will state awareness of the player not really being a monster.

Dragon Quest IV

The staff is found in a chest at the Royal Crypt. It is needed for The Hero to take the form of monsters in order to blend in at Diabolic Hall. Talking to the monsters otherwise will result in a battle. In addition, the player needs to be in monster form to talk to the monsters at the meeting so that Psaro will arrive to announce the revival of Estark.

In the NES Version, using the staff also allowed for tranformations into The Hero (both male or female), Ragnar, Alena, Kiryl, Borya, Torneko, Maya or Meena.
