Nose For Treasure is a recurring ability in the franchise. It checks the amount of remaining treasure in the current dungeon floor.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III

Nose for treasure is learned by thieves, and is unavailable in the NES version.

Dragon Quest IV

In the remakes, Torneko learns this at level 9.

Dragon Quest V

Learned by Sancho at level 31 and by Dwight at level 10.

Dragon Quest VI

Nose for Treasure is learned by advancing to rank 7 of the Thief vocation.

Dragon Quest VII

Same as in VI.

Dragon Quest VIII

Yangus can use Nose For Treasure after allocating 16 skill points into his "Humanity" skill.

Notably there are two treasures (Mini medal and Seed of magic) that will later show up in some new vases in Argonia after The Bazaar relocates to a building between the Church and Castle, but Nose For Treasure will still pick up on them if used beforehand.

Dragon Quest IX

This ability is learned with 42 skill points invested into Acquisitiveness skill.

Unfortunately, it only checks the remaining red chests, not blue ones, severely limiting its usefulness.

Dragon Quest XI

Absent from the Playstation 4 and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game, Nose for Treasure appears in Dragon Quest XI S as one of Erik's capabilities. He already knows it upon joining the party.

Nose for Treasure can be accessed from the Quick Commands menu as well as from Erik's spell list, making it quick and easy to sniff out treasure. Note that although it will remain in the Quick Commands menu for the rest of the game after Erik joins the party, Nose for Treasure will fail to work if selected when Erik is incapable of doing it (for example, when he is temporarily taken hostage in Gondolia).
